Running toward the precipice

Friday, April 14

Reggie at our camp on Snowbird Mesa aka Poverty Flats, Overton, Nevada

Let’s take a look around, shall we?

This photo shows the main group of RVs.  We aren’t camped in this area.

Poverty Flats is a Bureau of Land Reclamation area.

While out walking Reggie, I talk with a guy who has spent the past eleven winters on the mesa.  He tells me there is a restriction, so to speak.  You’re not supposed to camp here during August and September when temperatures can soar to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Okay . . . not a problem!

Hard as it is to believe, a family did attempt to camp during those temperatures.  Rangers insisted they leave.  The people refused and subsequently they were hauled off and their possessions impounded.

They were fined severely, but not as bad as the fine that nature would’ve levied!

It’s calm on the mesa this morning, after yesterday’s powerful winds.

I have to tell you what happened!  See the nice camp chair with attached table in the next photo?

That is one, great chair.

I think every person that has ever set their butt into it has commented how comfortable it is.  I bought it early in our vagabond days from a booth at Quartzite.

In fact, I bought two.

Well, yesterday, when the wind picked up considerably, I hurry to secure our campsite.  I was aware of the wind advisory and I knew that if the wind is strong through Moapa Valley, it is even stronger up here on the mesa.

I make sure the stakes are pounded in well.

I fold up the lounger and the camp chair and place them on the mat to help hold it down.  Also I add a few, big rocks from the fire ring and a couple one-gallon jugs of drinking water.

(In hindsight, I should’ve taken up the mat and put everything away.  The pulling and flapping on the sharp rocks put some wear and tear on the mat.)

Back to the story . . . .

The wind is fierce!

A huge dirt devil dances across the mesa until it falls over the cliff and vanishes.  Exciting!

Then, around noon, all is calm.

“C’mon, Reggie.  We can go outside now.”

I set up my nice camp chair next to the Best Little Trailer, sit down in it, and enjoy a bowl of my fattening potato salad, a rare treat!

Later, while we’re inside . . .

The wind picks up again with even more velocity than before.  I’m on the computer and don’t pay much attention until I hear the sound of metal against rock.

I jump up and wrest open the door.

“OH, NOOOOOO!”

The camp chair, my very nice camp chair, is SOMERSAULTING toward the edge of the cliff!

Quickly I slide my feet into my sandals and burst out the door.  As I run the forty feet or so, I think of the times I’ve chased items blown across the desert — plastic bags, a piece of paper, even the doggie bed.

You know how it goes.  Right before you bend to pick up the thing, the wind blows it further, as if playing a game of tease.

The chair stops about three feet from the edge.

Oh, please, please, don’t go over . . . .

Okay, RVSue, get a grip.  You have two of these chairs.  If one is blown into the badlands below, you won’t suffer any hardship.

But, darn it, I want to keep that chair!

Standing near the precipice, especially in wind like this, is not something I feel good about.

Quickly I grab the chair and fold it up before it acts as a parachute carrying me off to the silica plant in Overton.  (See illustration below.)

Really.  I kid you not.  These wind gusts are boss!

Happy ending . . . .

I didn’t lose my nice chair!

    Hi, Sue.

  2. Pat from Mich. says:

    Whoa! Second?

  3. Lois Joy says:

Not sure how close I am but will try!

    • Lois Joy (MN) says:

I am now living back in MN…formerly AZ…still following your blog and my dream that never happened. Love your stories…

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Hi, Lois Joy! You tied SECOND PLACE with Pat!

Your dream “never happened?” I hope you mean it hasn’t happened yet.

  4. Renee from Idaho says:

    Wow! Getting closer to 1st!

  5. Jean in Southaven, MS says:

I might be in the top ten today. I must have moved up in line somewhat.

  6. Pat from Mich. says:

Wind is nothing to be disrespected! I grew up in Santa Ana Ca and I remember walking in the Santa Ana winds. You could actually lean forwards and the wind would hold you up. Some years ago, a small car was picked up by the wind and blown over the edge of the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan. That said, I’m glad you saved your chair – I’d probably have gone after it too, lol. I’m glad you have a tether on Reggie, he’s a little guy and pretty light. Every time we have high winds here, branches break off and drop on my roof.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

No chance of branches breaking off and flying around here. You’re right about Reggie. He goes inside and stays there when it’s windy.

    • Sarvi in OR says:

It was a Yugo that was blown over the bridge, I remember that (born, raised and lived most of my life in MI).

    • Nancy in California says:

      Hi Pat,
I live in the san fernando valley, grew up here as a child, and moved back several years ago. I loved the santa ana winds as a child, and still do! As you remember, we can have gusts of 60+ miles an hour!

  7. Deena in Phoenix, AZ says:

I’m happy you saved your chair, mostly I’m glad you were able to stop, grab and not roll over into the Precipice…Oh My! I get a thrill when I receive a notice that there is a RVSue waiting in the inbox…
I am waiting for delivery of my camera today so I may have it when I go to the Boyce Thompson “Arr-bore-EE-tum” with some of the Nieces and Nephews…One of the younger Nieces can’t wait to see where Bridget rode her car…I am taking Miss Mollie an her “Wheels”…will be lots of fun…

Happy Easter Weekend on your lovely Mesa…

    Deena and Miss Mollie

  8. Shawna says:

Yeah! So happy you didn’t lose your chair, and we didn’t lose YOU!

  9. george says:

    hi sue,
here on the east coast by this time there’s about 50 already already posted.
    hunker down and stay safe.

  10. Nora now in Deming NM says:

Hi Sue, Am just learning about those winds. Have had several days of pretty powerful ones since leaving central Texas. So far nothing’s blown away. But today I washed both the car and the RV, vacuumed, etc. and then the darn wind picked up. Oh well. At least they’ll look better for a little while. Am enjoying NM except for those winds. White Sands and Silver City pretty impressive. Off to the cliff dwellings tomorrow.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

You’re seeing places I haven’t gone to yet! Enjoy your visit to the cliff dwellings. We were close to them when we passed through Silver City. I wasn’t feeling well then and had to postpone that visit to our next time in that area of NM. I’m glad you are having a good time.

As for the wind, it does good things, as you know — spreading flowers, cleaning the land, making sand dunes… 🙂

      • Geri, Florida panhandle! says:

The Gila Cliff Dwellings are really nice! Chuck and I really enjoyed it there!
I am also glad the Quartzite blue chair was rescued! I remember when you bought those chairs!

        • rvsueandcrew says:

          Good morning, Geri!

I remember I was dead set on getting the chairs in red fabric and Chuck told me to go ahead and buy the blue ones. He was right, a better choice!

  11. Cat Lady says:

I should have my new driver’s side windshield installed sometime next week, Sue. Fingers Xd that the cats and I can get outta shortly thereafter. Seems to always be something. Hope you and Reggieman have a good Easter weekend. Take care.

  12. Judy in East Texas says:

Hi Sue and Reggie…..happy you saved your chair, I have one and it’s my favorite!
All the pictures of the Reggie were darling, he looks as though he is enjoying the campsite.

Stay safe out there and rock on, Judy

    • rvsueandcrew says:

You, too, Judy. Yeah, aren’t these chairs great? I’ve only seen them at Quartzsite, made by EZ Products.

Reggie does enjoy it here. I could tell he remembered the place well, the way he took off down the lane (Zombie Road) like he owns the place.

  13. Elizabeth in WA says:

What a hair raising story!! I hate heights myself….argh!! Glad you are ok!! Twas only a chair…but maybe they don’t make them like it anymore? Well, Sue that is a way to get some exercise in quick order I guess!!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Hi, Elizabeth! Gotta’ add some excitement to the blog, once in a while. I wouldn’t have chased that chair to the very edge. Fortunately it stopped right at the limit of where I’ll go. 🙂

  14. Sherri in California says:

Hi Sue! Glad to see you and Reggie are still on the ground, and the BLT is not taking flying lessons today :).

Wishing you and all the blogerinos out there a happy Easter.

  15. Tammie Villanueva says:

Our winds are pretty darn bad at times
glad you guys are doing good, the fair is today in Logandale you two should go there is lots of food and crafts.

  16. Sarvi in OR says:

Your pictures are great as usual, but don’t you miss trees at all? It just looks so barren…

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Thanks, Sarvi. I’m glad you liked the photos.

No, I don’t miss trees at all. I love the openness and the big sky. When I go to a heavily treed area like parts of Oregon or Washington, I feel closed in until I adjust. It’s a matter of what one becomes used to, I think.

  17. BadgerRickInWis says:

Always love a happy ending. I’ve kept an eye out for a similar chair for awhile now but it hasn’t found me yet. Take care.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Rick!

Here’s the website of the company. Scroll down and you’ll see mine! They come in several colors, a very important consideration when setting up an outdoor room. 🙂 I wish Amazon sold them.

Hope all is well with you. I know I’m not the only one who misses you. Have a great weekend!

      • BadgerRickInWis says:

Awwwww, that’s sweet of you to say.

Of course there’s a new post up so probably no one but you will see this but you Sue but always know that I’m riding along. When you hear some rattle from the back of the PTV. That’s me, letting you know you’re never alone.

        • rvsueandcrew says:

I appreciate you letting me know that, Rick. Some of the “old-timers” have disappeared and, I admit, it hurts. Silly of me, of course, because people’s lives change and they move on.

Nice to know you’re rattling around in the back of the PTV. Ever so often please do move up to the passenger seat for a chat. 🙂

  18. Mary in CO says:

This blog really shows us how photogenic Reggie is! Yes, wind can be a headache, especially when it causes one to be inside the camper or rv more than you’d like. Just be thankful you are not tent camping.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Mary!

I’m always thankful I’m not tent camping, although I regret I didn’t go tent camping in my youth.

Wind can drive a person crazy if it is relentless. It happened to pioneer women on the Plains. We get just enough wind here to make life interesting. The storm I photographed and posted a while back was exhilarating!

      • beach boomer says:

I read about how women were literally driven crazy by the relentless winds on the Wyoming prarie. One symptom of the impending mental breakdown was that they would run outside, stretch out their arms and spin in circles — kind of like you racing for your chair! Happy Easter! Reggie’s got himself a fine Easter chick there!

        • rvsueandcrew says:

Happy Easter, beach boomer! Oh, Reggie loves Yellow Chicken. I can tell because he beats her up quite regularly. 🙂

  19. Dawn in MI says:

You had me breathing hard for a moment there.

  20. Pookie and Chuck in Todd Mission Tx says:

I love tader salad and pinto beans…..
    sometimes with some brisket……..yummy
    chuck and pookie

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Good morning, chuck and pookie!

Your menu sounds like summer in Texas. 🙂 Time to fire up the BBQ grill or the smoker . . . Happy Saturday to you, the Mrs., and your crew!

  21. Retiredcajunlady N Louisiana says:

LOL Ok, I know I shouldn’t be laughing, but it is too funny! I could just picture you in my mind’s eye chasing your favorite “company” chair over the desert. I am glad you caught it, didn’t get blown away, and lived to tell the story to all Blogorinos.
Sue, the pictures are just gorgeous today. And Reggie is precious. And potato salad…yummy!!
I looked at the weather forecast in the margin and it looks like the winds won’t be too bad…at least I am hoping the forecast includes up on the flat too. I am not a big fan of strong winds…too many hurricanes in my life! Do be safe and do get blown away!!
My Godson and his wife had their baby girl today…after three boys! Needless to say we are all excited, none more than my brother, the Poppa (grandpa)! I am truly happy for them.
Enjoy your weekend and have a Blessed Easter!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

What happy news — the long-awaited daughter arrives for your Godson and his family! This Easter is especially blessed. I’m happy for all of you!

Thanks for complimenting me on the photos and on the precious-ness of the Reggie Man. He is a joy to live with and to photograph… and to share with the world. Having said that, right now he’s lying on the floor, face down on the rug, whining for a walk. 🙂

You be well and happy, Retiredcajunlady. Always good to hear from you!

  22. Wow you had all of us Blogerooos just about ready to throw you a Long Rope, was on the edge of my seat for sure,,,, Sue you must think that the chair can be replaced and you can’t, who would take care of Reggieman if you went over and us Blogerooos would be lost with out our RVSUE,, oooh noooo 😢😭😩, you be careful young lady and have a safer pleasant Easter weekend and give Reggieman a huge hug from us too,,,,,,,, Rusty n Piper 🤓👣🐾

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Good morning, Piper n’ Rusty!

You’d need a very, very long rope to haul me up onto the mesa! You’re right — a chair isn’t very important, compared to life itself.

Thank you for the wish for our safety and weekend. I wish the same for you always.

  23. Linda-NC says:

Sue- Cannot post-Math quiz is gone. Although
I did get one comment up yesterday. i know that you are having trouble with your blog, just wanted you to be aware.

    • Linda-NC says:

So that worked. Is math gone for good? I do not have a great connection here, so that may be the problem.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Good morning, Linda!

I have removed the math question temporarily. I’ll put it back when I can no longer keep up with the influx of spam. I hope to have the blog working better soon.

      • Susan Vlastelica says:

Couldn’t think of a better spot to ask this burning question – I see others get a notification from your blog when there is a new post. I requested email notification several times and still don’t get any sort of notification.
Thank you, and a very Happy Easter to you and Reggie too!

        • rvsueandcrew says:

          Good morning, Susan,

I don’t know why it doesn’t work for you. I have no way of knowing how many are others experiencing the same. The only thing I can guess — and it will sound like an excuse, but I throw it out anyway — is your email address looks like a spam address: a name followed by numbers. Maybe a spam filter is blocking the email. I really don’t know. I’m sorry.

I appreciate you checking to see if there’s a new post. Happy Easter to you, too!

  24. Virginia620 (AL) says:

Hi Sue n Reggie. I’m still with you, enjoying your posts and pics, as usual. Hugs to both.

  25. Chey (WA coast) says:

Oh RVSue, you are so terribly funny!
Why is laughing aloud when I’m alone embarrassing when there’s no one there to be shy for I wonder?
Reggie’s looking good. What a dream life for a dog. …hmm, yes indeed. Cuddles, blankets, Sue, car rides, blue monkey, walks, Sue, rotisserie chicken, dog dates, ear scratches, Sue, Carl Jr’s drive thru, soft blankets, Sue.

  26. SuziCruzi says:

Hey Sue, Howzit with you and Reg-man today? Loved your chair setting sail story today. That’s some wind making things go “bump in the night”. When you were new to trailering in Miss Casita, did your first big wind make you nervous about being blown away? When I was a kid back in Hawaii, big wind was commonplace, but to this day the big windy gusts make me edgy. Perhaps the fear of one of my big firs smashing my house as I sleep?

I wanted to ask about your friend Dale; from Mittry Lake back in December of ’13? Do you hear from him? I don’t remember you mentioning him lately, and I am curious.

    TGIF and happy weekend!! xo

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, suzicruzi,

No, I haven’t heard a word from Dale since I met him at Mittry Lake. I made the mistake of not getting his phone number when I gave him mine, along with my email address. I would love to know how he is.

No, I don’t worry about being blown away in the wind. Maybe I should, but I don’t. 🙂

  27. Denise - Richmond VA says:

    Hi, Sue!

I am so glad that you and your chair are safe! I could “see” it tumbling close to the edge – yikes! Hope the wind calms down this this weekend so you and Reggie can enjoy more outside time. Feeling like you are getting a full-body dermabrasion treatment, with all that sand flying around, is not fun! Seeing you camped at Poverty Flats made me smile! That area provides lots of privacy, beauty, and convenience; it is easy to see why PF is one of your favorite landing spots! 🙂

Sending you and Reggie love, lots of hugs, and Easter blessings from me and Gracie pup. Thank you for taking the time to create your blog so we can travel with you through your prose and pictures. Your efforts are greatly appreciated! 🙂

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Good morning, Denise!

I hope you and the dear little Gracie pup are having a wonderful weekend. It’s nice of you to acknowledge the time and effort I put into this blog. Well, you’re nice, so that’s what you do! 🙂

There’s a lot less wind-blown dust on the mesa than at, say, Midland, due to all the rocks. You can see the rocks in that first photo. Amazing that Reg runs around on them. People need to adjust their steps to avoid tripping, but not Reggie.

Thank you for the Easter blessings. I wish the same for you! Wow, lots of hugs…. 🙂

  28. Elizabeth in WA says:

Hope your weekend is quiet and peaceful where you are!!

Went shopping today…not a cart to be found!! SO…here we must carry our own shopping bags so in my groceries went, until I got up to pay…and stopped shopping once the bag was heavy enough for me to carry!! GOOD way to go Fred Meyers eh?? I am not keen on crowds anyway…last time I was in that particular one…some ole guy, probably first time using one of those motorized carts, ran over my foot!! I never heard him coming…no noise from such things!! So today I HURRIED!!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Good morning, Elizabeth! Thank you, it is peaceful here this morning. You remind me that it’s been a long, long time since I’ve shopped in a store like Fred Meyer’s. I remember how I had to spend money on clothes for work which required those shopping trips.

      Have a peaceful, blessed day!

  29. Norman in San Diego says:

    Hi Sue,

Glad you were able to save your chair. I have seen some of the wind in the desert videos on you tube. Very intense.
You need a nice roasted chicken to go with your potato salad and some vanilla bean ice cream. That would be a weekend treat.

    Norman

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Good morning, Norman!

I did have a meal of roasted chicken with my homemade potato salad. 🙂 I’m trying to stay away from ice cream for a while. You like vanilla bean, I’m crazy for anything with caramel. The last ice cream I ate was a swirl of caramel with cashews and I still think about it with fondness. *sigh*

I hope this weekend is a treat for you!

  30. weather says:

This post is a particularly good demonstration of your skill in using photos to illustrate what you are writing about. By looking at the first one I can envision both the dirt devil dancing toward the cliff before vanishing, and how easily your chair could have done the same thing. Your last photo shows how far above the rest of the land that mesa is, and why retrieving anything that falls over the cliff could not be done.

What could possibly have made that family want to camp there despite the heat and being told to leave? I hope it was just believing they could somehow remain cool enough to be alright that caused their defiant behavior. It makes me wonder, though, if they hade no viable alternative for another place to stay that they could afford. I don’t envy the rangers who need to enforce the rules in order to prevent the public from endangering themselves. Especially the ones involved with that case, what an awful position for them to be in.

Viewing the dirt devil and the exhilaration you felt when the wind was strong there must have been wonderful for you! I’m very glad you were able to save your chair. One might ordinarily think “it’s just a camp chair” , but in your case that is your “living room” furniture. It’s hard to find comfortable chairs that also contribute to a healthy posture.

As durable as your mat has proven itself to be, your not having taken it inside is understandable. Given all the conditions of places you make home it seems some wear and tear is inevitable,( and worth it 🙂 ! ) . Gosh, Reggie really is simply adorable. I hope he and you have a blessed and delightful Easter.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Good morning, weather!

Gosh, you impress me again and again with your ability to analyze and appreciate my posts. I wondered if anyone would relate the dust devil vanishing over the precipice with me chasing the chair to the edge. As for the photos… Part of the fun of mixing photos with text is figuring out how to explain situations with less words, using the photos. I wanted folks to see what the chair looked like. Rather than describe it… I go outside with Reggie, position the chair, give Reg the Yellow Chicken, and take those photos. Back inside I go to finish the post. 🙂

Yeah, the chair and the mat are prized possessions, but only possessions.

Well, my “simply adorable” canine pal is fussing for attention. We’ll go for our walk now. Wishing you a wonderful Easter as well… Bye for now!

      • I learned how to work your magic on the blog. Thank you!

      • weather says:

Good morning, Sue, I hope your sunrise was one perfectly suited to help you enjoy Easter. Mine was bright and beautiful!

About relating, it’s funny that while envisioning your being blown beyond the edge of the precipice you chose the silica plant as the place you’d have been carried to. It seems that you relate how little you enjoyed being camped near that plant (because it’s noise made sleep impossible) with how a lack of caution while making choices might have quite unpleasant consequences. Those consequences are, though, made humorous when you describe them , both imagined or remembered in hindsight, Ha!

The friends I spend most holidays with and I will share a late breakfast/brunch together in a little while, so I need to get ready for that soon. There will be just five of us at today’s celebration, yay! I hope your day will be as simple and sweet.

        • rvsueandcrew says:

Thank you, weather. The sunrise was simply lovely this morning. Funny how the most mundane things can lead to that which is glorious. If it weren’t for my bladder waking me up and instigating a trip to the bathroom every morning, I might miss some of the most wonderful sights, like the first hint of the sun rising. How’s that for “silver lining!”

You and your friends enjoy your celebration on this special day!

I’m working on a new post this morning which should be visible when you return home. See you later!

  31. Reine in Plano (when we're not camping) says:

    Hey Sue,
No sweat about the ads. I do t think they are necessarily the same for everyone. I’m seeing weather stations not weather vanes, maybe because I’ve ordered indoor/outdoor thermometers from Amazon before.

My favorite quote from a good friend “wind doesn’t make an appointment”. It’s usually used to warn folks about putting their awning out without properly staking it down and putting the awning strap over it to keep it secure, then leaving their campsite for some sightseeing. Glad you rescues your chair.

    Have a blessed Easter.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Reine,

Good to hear from you again. I hope you, Paul, and family are all well and ready for celebrating the joy of Easter.

We all see what you see for ads… weather related stuff.

  32. Denise - Richmond VA says:

Hmmm….he comments are flipping out again. Many are missing there were more here in the wee hours of this morning when I posted a note. Sorry that you are having to deal with the WordPress demons, Sue. Sending you and Reggie love and hugs from me and Gracie pup. Have a blessed Easter weekend! xxxooo. 🙂

  33. Whew!! Good save 🙂

I’m always amazed that some humans have to be saved from themselves at taxpayer expense. Glad to hear they were fined for their stupidity.

  34. Brenda in Texas says:

So glad that the story turned out well. Boy, you held me spell bound for a few seconds.
Easter Blessings to you and Reggie.

  35. Mark Greene says:

I thought the chair was a goner. It is hard to find a folding chair that is comfortable, so many of them sit too low and are hard to get in and out of. The reclining chair also looks like it would be comfortable. Sam’s has some and I just about bought a couple.
    Mark,
    Salina KS

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Good morning, Mark! I consider both the chair and the lounger to be two of my better “investments.” 🙂

  36. eliza in illinois says:

    Happy Easter, Sue and Reggie!

  37. ApplegirlNY says:

Easter Blessings, Everyone. He has risen!

Beautiful spring day here in Upstate NY. Daffies and forsythia are in bloom.

    • Good morning! Applegirl,
You’re up early. The early bird gets the worm.
There is the same common saying in Japanese, literally means “Early risers come out ahead a few pence”. 🙂
      Have a good one!

  38. Hi! RVSue, Reggie and blogorinos!
The info. at the beginning, on the occurrence on Snowbird Mesa is valuable for me Japanese. I added your description on my ancient post again. Tkank you.

Places where I’ve boondocked in the US“.

    Have a good one!

  39. Rhodium says:

Reading about your tribulations with the wind, I wondered if the next blog post would be entitled “RV Sue takes up hang gliding”.

  40. Patti from So Cal says:

    Good morning, Sue!

    Happy Easter…He Is Risen!

  41. Lily says:

A very Blessed Easter to you and Reggie!

  42. Chuck Hajek says:

A very happy Easter to you and Rocketman! Are those the same chairs you got when we were there???? Way back when??? WOW, we should have bought some too! We’ve bought probably 6+ since then !!! Miss all y’all’

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Yep, they’re the same chairs, Chuck. They don’t get as much use because there are two chairs and one me, also I do like my lounger for reading and relaxing. I hope you and Geri had a wonderful Easter.

You gave me a little bit of worry about the danger of the precipice but then a good snicker about being “….blown over to the silica plant in Overton…” I had this mental image of Julie Andrews holding on to her umbrella, big smile on her face, heading off into the sky!

    Hi, Sue,

To help you remember precisely why our dear Badger Rick seldom comments now you may want to look at his opening remarks on your Roaming Around Town post. I miss him, too!
