The Best Little Trailer finally gets the attention she needs

Wednesday, November 8

The crew and I toodle over to Twin Palms RV Supply and Repair in Blythe in order to set up an appointment for the Best Little Trailer.  She needs to have her 12-volt system fixed. Also her refrigerator’s fan is not working.

“I’m sorry we can’t give you an appointment right away,” Karen apologizes. “Our man was bitten by a spider and he had a bad reaction.”

“You sure it was a spider?”

“Yeah, it was.  He’s sensitive to bites. He had to go to the hospital.”  She checks the appointment calendar.  “How about next Tuesday, the 14th, at 8:30? Would that be okay?”

Not only will it be okay, I’m delighted, given that my first attempt to get an appointment for RV service was LAST SPRING in Idaho. What’s a few more days?

Finally, I have an appointment!  Fast forward to . . .

Tuesday, November 14

Before leaving our camp at Midland LTVA, there’s much to do.

I need to make room for the repair guy to work.  I remove the large chest of drawers that sits under the two 12-volt receptacles and set it outside on the blue mat. I also remove the little table at the back of the BLT. A few other things go outside also. All this stuff I cover with the old comforter that the crew uses as a play mat.

After tidying and securing the interior of the BLT, I hitch up.

As I drive away in the dim, early morning light, I glance in the side mirror at the stuff left behind.

 How sad . . . It’s a Charlie Brown campsite!

I empty the waste tanks at Midland LTVA’s dump station and off we go to Blythe, arriving just in time for . . .

 The appointment!

John, the repair guy, checks fuses first and confirms that they all are good. After some detective work with his voltage meter, he sets to work on the wiring.

“I don’t like these snap-on connectors,” he says to himself as he replaces them with the regular kind..

Now he gets a better reading at the receptacles but not enough. Cleaning the contact points doesn’t help.

Replacing both receptacles does the trick. I push my inverter’s plug into the sockets and press the “on” button. The light comes on.

Oh happy day!

Next John gets the fan working on the refrigerator . A sensor was not making contact. I’m very relieved to have that fan working again. I’ve been concerned that my new fridge would overheat and fail.

Whew!

Let’s take a little break and look at a few photos, okay?

Cotton is still in the fields.

In some of the fields, harvesting has begun.

Bermuda hay is baled, waiting to be stacked . . .

While in another field, the sprinklers water the . . . um . . . alfalfa?  vegetables?

“Hey, guys!  Look!  The sheep are back!”

I wonder if these sheep were in Idaho when we were there.  Maybe they’re the ones who trotted past our campsite.

“Hi!  Welcome to sunny southern California!”

Okay, back to the appointment.

Before settling the bill at Twin Palms RV, I puchase a new screen (actually two in a box for $13.53) for my Fantastic fan. The old one is too dirty and decrepit to clean.

(Learn From My Mistake:  Do not fry food with the fan running on “out.”  It will draw particles of grease into the screen which will collect dirt.  Yuck.)

Here’s the fan with the new screen.  So clean, it’s invisible!

You can order these easy-install screens from Amazon: Fan-Tastic Vent Pop ‘N Lock Screen

The bill for the repairs:

Parts, 12-volt receptacle and the two fan screens: $26.52. Labor: $90.00. Tax: $2.12. TOTAL: $118.64

~ ~ ~

Next we go to Cosme’s Propane!

My new Olympian Wave-3 Catalytic Heater is installed for $45.00. Before leaving Cosme’s I light the heater while the repair guy watches.

Heat at last!

In the sixteen days since the heater was installed we haven’t needed it.  Not once.  But it is very nice to know we have it when we need it!

    Take Care

  5. Sandy from Lancaster, PA says:

Happy to hear all is fixed and you have heat. Stay cozy

  6. Dawn in NC says:

I sat down to a really late breakfast 🍳 hoping against hope that a new RV Sue would be available to read. I open my email and VOILA my wish is granted. I am so glad you got all the repairs completed! I picture you blogging happily from the BLT.🎉

  7. Elizabeth in WA says:

Glad all was fixed for what sounds a reasonable cost too!! Happy days Sue!!

  8. Better to have heat and not need it than to need heat and not have it. Glad you have your 12 volt fixed and the heater installed. Now it is relaxing and walking time at the LTVA.

  9. Cinandjules 🌵 says:

Everything is fixed on the PTV and BLT…you are now free to move about the desert!
    Peace of mind…
    Have a great weekend!

  10. Stephanie Turner OR says:

I’m a fan of getting a list of tasks checked off. Just love that feeling. Now you can kick back and forget about these items. Hopefully the boys can keep you busy – just kidding as I know they can fill all spare time. Have a good week!

  11. Nora now in Dauphin Island AL says:

So glad you got the heater fixed. Looks like we will all need heat this coming week! Even supposed to get in the 30s here in Alabama. It’s so nice when everything works well, isn’t it? Right now I have a leak under the kitchen sink and I can’t figure out where it’s coming from. Always something!

  12. Joe in TN says:

It’s the little things (like getting stuff fixed) that make for happy toodling. Hope the repairman has made a complete recovery from the spider bite…ouch!

  13. Dawn in Asheville...err, Ehrenberg says:

As always great pics and love the detail about the work done at Twin Palms. They sound like a great shop! Good resource to know about. And love the cotton pics – who would know they grew cotton in southern California? Thought that was a gulf coast crop.

    • Elizabeth in WA says:

My grandpa grew cotton many years…in middle California…was in those days a fairly common site in his community!! Lots we don’t know till we travel to other places huh?

      • Elizabeth in WA says:

We learned a lot when we moved to N.Carolina for a decade…so much about the south was never told out west…we are glad we had that opportunity.

        • Dawn in Asheville...err, Ehrenberg says:

Oh, and so much about our country’s history is not told in the south, let me tell you!!! I had quite an education once I ended up in college above the mason dixon line 🙂

  14. SecondLife says:

Great to see the BLT is in tip top shape again. Thank you for sharing your life with us. I have taken the liberty of mentioning your blog in my latest post. It is not an attempt to hijack your post but rather an acknowledgement of gratitude.

  15. mostlylost says:

Oh, yay! (Kermit flaily arms) Everything is fixed and for a reasonable price. Better yet, you have all those repairs done and you can travel with some peace of mind!

I’m going to add that repair shop to my list – good shops are like hens teeth. We’re RV newbies, but we have found two reputable places so far. Hope you don’t mind me sharing – maybe this will help other blogorinos:

Country Tyme – Georgetown, Texas. It looks like a hole in the wall place, but they are reasonable and do really good work (we had them install our fans and fix a hydraulic leak in our slide)
    http://countrytymerv.net/

B & S Mobile – Louisville, Kentucky. Our furnace blower went out, and Brian was fast and reasonable. He had the blower ordered, shipped, and installed within a week. He also does oil changes. An oil change is
a little pricey because he comes to your RV, but since we’re too big for most ford shops, we had him take care of that, too.

  16. Susan in Dallas says:

Great looking sheep, can cows be far behind? I need to get my winter check-up for my HVAC system but it’s supposed to be 76 degrees today. Maybe next week. I might even be able to open a window and get some fresh air in the house!

  17. LeeJ in Northern California says:

    Miss Sue! Good day!
Today’s post made me think, my dad used to pick cotton in New Mexico in the thirties, it made me remember good stories seeing the photos of sheep and cotton. Child labor!
I am so glad you were able to get your Casita repaired, poor repair man! I was bitten by a black widow when I was a kid, nasty wound…but since then when I get an insect bite my poor body sooooo overreacts. Swelling red lumps and sometimes sick, I wonder if the repair guy had a similar background?
    I guess no one bothered Charlie Brown’s campground….since you didn’t comment..wow, great blog today..thanks!

  18. Reine in Plano (when not camping) says:

Sounds like your Christmas came early with all the repairs to the BLT done. It’s sooo nice to have everything working and in order. And taking everything out probably gave you an opportunity to do some cleaning as well.

We’re taking our Casita to Rice next week to get some exterior cosmetic work done. We need some oopsies in the fiberglass fixed and about time. They’ve only been there since we bought the Casita 9 years ago:)

  19. Ken in Queen Creek, AZ says:

Hi Sue. May I ask why you choose a catalytic heater like that? Did your Casita come with it? I am starting to itch to go csmping. I think we’ll be ready- as soon as the Christmas decorations are put away.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Ken,

I followed Tioga George’s blog for several years and he had a Wave 3 which he liked. Casita has a furnace option. I decided against that and had the Wave 3 installed later when camped in Elephant Butte, NM.

  20. 21. ValGal (westernWA) says:

Glad to hear you’ve got the BLT all set for whatever you need in the coming months. You’ve had a lot more patience about it than I would have.

Hope there have been goodies for the boys on your town runs. Rotisseries perhaps?

We decorated the clubhouse and trimmed the tree at he RV park here. It looks very festive. The days are dark, wet and chilly, though.

  22. Barbara (Nashville) says:

Glad you have gotten all the repairs taken care of. Wish I could say the same. I need to get some minor things taken care of and get my new kitchen lighting installed. Changing out a fluorescent fixture for an LED light fixture. I do not trust myself with electrical things, plus they are kind of heavy and since DH can’t help, I need to either hire someone or try to get my neighbor to help me.

Finally have things in my life arranged that I have some time to start getting rid of stuff around here and re-organizing the things that are left. When I get done , this house will be very minimalist.

  23. Jo in OR says:

Glad to here your repairs are done…you can rest easy and enjoy life. Loved the sunset sunrise pics from last post. I so look forward to your positive posts for my bedtime reading.

  24. Denise - Richmond VA says:

    Hi, Sue,

Yippee!! The BLT is whole again! I am glad that all of the repairs are behind you. Now you have the freedom of moving if you choose to, knowing that you will have heat. Happy Anniversary to your batteries! 🙂

Loved the pink sky photos on the last post. Have a good day, dear Sue and Crew! Sending you, Reggie, and Roger love and hugs from me and Gracie pup! Their new bed looks quite plush and comfy! 🙂

  25. Hi RVSue
This message comes to you from sunny South Africa. I am staying with family for Christmas, but have managed to find time to catch up on your blog. I have shown it to my family. Hoping they will start following you.
Glad to see your BLT has had a much needed make-over. It will probably be getting cold overnight soon, so your heating will be much appreciated.
Anyway, I just wanted to say hi from Durban, South Africa.
Enjoy the festive season in whatever fashion you choose.

  26. Mndreamer says:

Hi Sue- I was looking at the post from when you redecorated the BLT (March 7, 2016) and wondered… Could you provide some info about the white curtains in the Casita? –Where did you get them, and are you happy with them (Still have them? Does the white soil and launder easily?) Also, can you say a bit about how you hung them? If there’s a post that I’ve missed, because I sure did miss the original post about the redecorating, can you redirect me? Now that I’ve finally purchased my own, I’m working on making my Casita a home, and I think you have done it so well!
Best to you and the Crew!

    • weather says:

What does Barbie have to do with curtains for a Casita travel trailer- is the post showing how Sue hung them and with amazon links to buy the curtains and rod she still has. One can type the first few words of that title into the search box above on the right side of this page to find that post.

      • rvsueandcrew says:

Thank you very, very much, weather, for answering Mndreamer’s question for me. I received a warning from Verizon that I only have 10% of my allotted data left in this billing cycle. I’m trying to conserve until 12/9 by not doing a lot of searching and linking.

      • Mndreamer says:

Thanks for the help, weather- we can all use a little kindness, sometimes! 🙂

        • rvsueandcrew says:

Mndreamer… I apologize for the delay in answering the rest of your question. I had to go offline to handle a situation. See response below.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

In addition to the information that weather provided . . .

I’m happy with the curtains. Dirt washes out very easily. I’ve cleaned them by dipping them in slightly soapy water. Then let them dry, hanging in a breeze so any wrinkles fall out. When using a washing machine, I wash them on cold, when done take them out, fold them loosely, take them home, hang them up damp. No wrinkles!

You can see at the old post about curtains that they are hung on rods that hang on drapery hooks in the Casita wall. Secure with elastic hair bands. Do make sure the rings slide smoothly (bend the drapery hook out). I didn’t do that and carelessly pulled the curtain across the rod, the rings tight against the wall and subsequently a couple rings came loose. Don’t do what I did and you won’t have that happen.

Remember to buy double the curtain to cover the window so you have folds. It took 12 panels for the BLT which is a Liberty Deluxe model (4 panels per window x 3 windows).

Thank you for admiring my decorating!

  27. weather says:

My, oh my, this post has a lot to love! The pictures of sheep and cotton in the fields are such a treat to see, and it’s great news about the repair and installation. Knowing that you’ll be warm when you need to and have the use of the receptacles again feels as if a burden was lifted from my own shoulders. I’ve so often wished you weren’t going without those conveniences and comfort since last spring, Yippee! 🙂 – it’s all fixed and really didn’t cost much to get taken care of.

This is my third attempt to write a comment since you published this post. I saw the photo of the Charlie Brown camp and thought of the other time you’d done something similar, while getting your refrigerator installed. So I went back to read about that, and kept reading page after page… just enjoying reminiscing . Later, I tried again, got caught up in the whole finding Roger story- because that happened when the need for repairs began…

After each of those sessions I had to leave my laptop and get other things done, so didn’t leave a note on here. Yet I left both times with a smile on my face. Often a new reader will mention how much they enjoy your writing, photos and stories. I guess it’s obvious that I do ,too, because I’m still here after all this time. Still, I want to mention this, Sue- you really do have a wonderful blog and talents that make reading it a pleasure every time.

    • Barb in Florida says:

      Dear Sweet Weather,

I would like to say thank you to you. You, my friend, have added so, so much to our enjoyment. You are such a wordsmith & help us to see much more in each post. Very often, you say what we would – only better. I’m learning so much from you & trying to be more in-tune to my surroundings, people & animals I encounter. Also, to be more thoughtful in my words and actions. It’s very obvious I’m in your fan club with many others.

      To all the Blogorinos,
Can’t help feeling late to the party & wish I would’ve found you all earlier. Getting to “know” all of you has been so fun. I find myself laughing, rejoicing & greiving with you & thinking of and praying for people I have never met in person.

Thank you, Sue! I get more from your blog than you’ll ever know. I think you have changed me & my future for the better.

      Lots of love to EVERYBODY!!!
      Have a wonderful day
      Barb

      • Elizabeth in WA says:

I also am glad for what you share Barb…and I agree with you on how well Weather states things!! I have been reading here from shortly after Sue began this lifestyle…but whenever a person comes on board…it is all good!! This is a unique place for sure!!

        • weather says:

Hugs, lady, it’s always nice to see you’re still on board.

          • Elizabeth in WA says:

Hugs to you too, dear Weather…if you have any extra prayers…please remember my little family here on the 6th…going to court with our daughter to TRY to protect the children…sad, sad, sad…life is so hard sometimes.

            • Barb in Florida says:

Sending prayers & hoping your attendance will be what helps things to go the way you wish.

Will be at the DDS that day, getting bad news $$$. Wish I was close enough to go across the boarder for a better deal – no insurance. Thinking of you & family will give me something to do while my mouth is hanging open.

            • Elizabeth in WA says:

Thanks so much Barb!! One never knows how things will go in a courtroom…but we HOPE the grandchildren will be better protected.

Sorry about your $$$ coming up…me too…in January…way more than I wish to pay…but what can we do?

      • weather says:

Your kind note to me shows you are already thoughtful in your words and actions, Barb, it brightened my wonderful day.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

What a delightful response to my blog, weather! Now I’m the one with the big smile. 🙂

  28. suzago in PNW says:

    Hi Sue and Blogorinos,
So glad you got your power and heat fixups. Seemingly simple repairs but so important.

A while back someone mentioned a small battery starter in these comments. That spurred me to follow the links, read the reviews, and… many weeks later… I bought 3 Microstart XP-1 (one for me, one for each of my adventurous daughters). (Available through Amazon, but because of reports of fakes, I bought mine from the manufacturer.) Then, to make it a Christmas bonanza, I went back to Amazon and bought this tire inflator: P.I. Auto Store – Premium 12V DC Tire Air Compressor Pump, Portable Digital Auto Tire Inflator. Best for Car, RV, ATV,SUV Motorcycle, Bike. With Carry Case and this crank radio [Upgraded Version]RunningSnail Emergency Hand Crank Self Powered AM/FM NOAA Solar Weather Radio with LED Flashlight, 1000mAh Power Bank for iPhone/Smart Phone1 for each of us. (Sue, I do hope you got credit. I try to buy everything from Amazon by going through you first, but I’m worried with all my shopping around, I might have just gone in directly to make my buys.) Not our usual Christmas standard – we usually give handmade or fun gifts, and we always do a charity donation. But this year I am in a better financial situation and wanted to share. And as my daughters take longer trips, I do worry about them. (But I think I’m going to dress up this “Pyramid of Doom” as a zombie apocalypse kit.) So thanks to all you blogorinos who contributed to that portable battery conversation.

And Sue, the reason I’m in a life situation is thanks, in part, to you. You gave me a very relatable model of how to make a plan, sell/downsize/save and get myself out of a “box” that no longer nourished me. I started out thinking my new life would be more like yours, traveling and writing. Instead, I moved somewhere pretty and cheap, started a new part-time career as a way to earn grocery money, moved again, and long story short: I’m in a whole new career in the Pacific Northwest, loving it, reconnecting with family, and thinking I should have done this 20 years ago. The vagabond part of me is still there, but has been satisfied with exploring a new area and taking lots of long weekends and day hikes.

    • Elizabeth in WA says:

Wow have not heard from you here in some time…glad to hear all is well Suzago! So how are you enjoying all the liquid sunshine in these parts? I happen to love evergreen trees and green in general…so it surely takes a lot of rain to have this happen!! We have been back in the NW too for a couple years, moving to a different community to be near our daughter just last February. So kind of still settling in here. But we are happy with the area in general.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, suzago,

Thank you for the kind words. I’m glad for you, that you found a place and lifestyle that brings you happiness.

I’m pretty sure I didn’t get any credit for those items. I would’ve remembered three of the same items ordered at the same time because it would’ve been a pretty nice commission.

A couple things block the credit: putting items on a wish list or entering through a link from my page but not checking out until 24 hours have passed. Also filling one’s cart and then entering via my blog only to check-out doesn’t produce a commission. Thanks anyway for the thought!

BTW, I changed the links you posted into ones containing my code.

      • suzago in PNW says:

Rats! So sorry! I’ll do better in the future!

Hi Elizabeth – I’m loving the PNW, even the rain. It’s better than blizzards and ice storms.

After a day dealing with family (today) I’m a little less Susie Sunshine and a little more Susie needs her Wine… but I have to remember the big picture and the long haul.

        • Elizabeth in WA says:

So sorry about the hard day Suzago…we know how those are…we are terribly sad right now. I remember the song the Carpenters used to sing: Bless the beasts and the children, for in this world they have no choice, they have no voice…yep…tis a good description for us right now. I hope things will even out for you in future. Hope you make some good friends eventually wherever you are!!

  29. Ruthie in Fontana says:

Great to hear you now have your heat and light situations fixed. Keeping us informed of this keeps us coming back. I would like to say thank you for being the conduit to the conversations many of us in blogorino land enjoy. There are so many who sign in to make a friendly comment or give us info. My confession is I enjoy being able to read the comments as much as I enjoy reading about you Sue.

  30. Renee still in Idaho says:

Well, Sue, looks like your BLT is now in tip top shape and for a great deal too! I was surprised to see the cotton fields there in southern California. I just picked up two branches yesterday at a craft shop for decorating. I think they are real except for the stalks they are adhered to with wire and paper tape. Anyway, they are a beautiful blossom.

  31. So glad you’re up and running again!! At this rate you may have to move to use that heater – the forecast doesn’t look too chilly for a while :-)))

  32. Sarvi in OR says:

Have you ever noticed a problem with theft in the area? I would have felt a little weirded out by leaving my stuff sitting out like that. If that were here in Albany, the stuff would have been rummaged through and pieces missing…

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Sarvi,

I haven’t noticed any problem with theft in this area or any of the other places we’ve camped in over six years. . . with one exception, a campground in AZ where someone came through during the night and stole generators.

This confirms my theory: If you get away from people, you get away from the problems people cause.

  33. weather says:

Right after sunset is the best time to view this evening’s super moon. It will not only be full, it will appear larger and brighter because it’s closer to the earth than any other time this year. It’s out and gorgeous here in central NY state’s cloudless sky.

Just been outside, admiring the moon, quite high in the sky now here in NC. Beautiful!

Hi Sue.. I hung my new Wave 3 on my Scamp heater grate. Works great. Glad you got your new one. They are nice heaters. I will be coming to Quartzsite to boondock this January. May end up over your way if it gets too crowded at Quartzsite. Don’t worry, I won’t bother you. Can you tell me how far the farm fields are from Midland Long Term Visitors? The year I stayed at Mayflower County Park, I discovered it was too close to the chemicals they use on the crops. My allergies went nuts. I do enjoy spending the winter months down there. I know you do to.

      Hi, Jan,

The fields are about 4 miles from Midland LTVA (I’m terrible at estimating distance.) The fields are at a lower level which may help, also that the wind tends to blow away from Midland LTVA toward the fields. Actually it’s doing that now as I type this. The difference between Mayflower County Park and Midland LTVA… the former is closed in with vegetation and trees, whereas it’s open air out here.

Sounds good. Thanks for the information. I will check it out once I get to the Q. Just too crowded over there for me and Molly. She’s my little dog. May run into you sometime. Love your blog. Merry Christmas to you and the crew…

Regarding the alfalfa field – I have often wished for a field guide to crops. Don’t you think that would be a great idea? Maybe there is one, I haven’t actually looked for one!

I suppose a seed catalog would help maybe? I enjoyed crossing eastern Washington on the interstate. The fields had signs naming the crops.

I would probably do a better job identifying what’s growing in a field if I could get up close to the plants. However, growers aren’t happy about people trespassing so I keep my distance (except for the cotton photos!).

While camped at Green River, every time I drove to town and back to camp I passed a field full of melons ready for harvest. Some times it’s tough to be a good girl! 🙂

    Hi, Sue,

I hope the clouds clear and that you are able to enjoy the bright moon tonight. It was an extra nice ending to my weekend. Yesterday I saw a golden eagle. I was fortunate that no one was driving behind me. I stopped to watch him magestically swoop down and then soar from the trees on one side of the road to the other. What a treat! Made me smile the rest of the day! I felt so blessed to have been in the right place at the right time… 🙂

N’nite, Sue. No need to respond, I know you are near your WiFi limit. Sending you and the sweet Crew love and hugs from me and my sweet Gracie pup. She is all tuckered out; little Miss had a busy afternoon supervising me start to decorate our Christmas tree. 🙂

    Hi Sue & Crew –
Went through a link and bought 2 cases of 4/Bob’s Red Mill GF rolled oats & a box of 6 Sam Mills GF lasagna corte pasta. If anyone remembers Kraft Noodles & Chicken dinner in the brown box, (it’s been discontinued a while) that’s what the noodles are for. Let me know if you want the recipe.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Good morning, Barb!

I see the oats and pasta. Thank you! I see Bob’s Red Mill products on my orders reports periodically. 🙂

      • Barb in Florida says:

I usually order direct from Bob’s a 25 lb. bag! Shipping from Oregon is as much as the oats. It was free shipping on these items. They will probably arrive quick as we have an amazon warehouse close. Thanks Sue.
