What felt like summer yesterday, feels like spring today. The air temperature dropped and clouds moved in. Yesterday I wore short sleeves and shorts. This morning I pull on long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. It’s a great day to be out and about!
I unhitch the Best Little Trailer.
Reggie and I board the Perfect Tow Vehicle and motor a couple miles south on Route 111 as it stretches beside the Salton Sea. We turn into Salt Creek Primitive Camping Area.

Gee, hardly anyone camped here . . . .
Salt Creek is just as scenic as Corvina Beach.
It’s not as popular, I think, because the “facilities” are portable buildings without the flush toilets of Corvina. The camping fee is the same: $10 regular, $8 for seniors. If toilet quality is irrelevant to your camping style, you might prefer Salt Creek.
I camped at Salt Creek with my original crew in November 2012.
That was when Spike, ever the adventurer, got in trouble for sneaking off for a soak in the Salton Sea: “A new camp at the Salton Sea, and ‘Spikey! You didn’t!”
When we return to camp, I scatter bread crumbs on the picnic table

The table is below our sitting area (See photo below). Our outdoor room is like elevated box seats in a grand theater!
It’s chilly for lounging, so I go inside to get the comforter. While inside several gulls descend on the picnic table in a flurry and fracas of wings and squawks.
The bread crumbs disappear quickly.
A California Gull?
Wrapped in the comforter with Reggie’s warm body on my lap, I’m entertained by the shore birds. The pelicans arrive in floating ribbons above the surface of the Sea, in groups of five to twenty.
Occasionally a gull leaves the gang at the shoreline to circle the camp, perhaps hopeful I’ll break out more bread. I make several attempts to capture a gull-in-flight photo and I’m not very successful.
Although not good quality technically, I do like this next shot.
What a wing span in proportion to body size! What grace in flight!
Very few campers at Corvina Beach on this Monday.
The Super Bowl party group (above photo) has left. Also gone is the fee-jumper (an assumption based on late arrival and early departure — I could be wrong) who parked between us and the group.
Reggie and I walk the beach, heading north.
Clouds have gathered, obscuring the sunlight.
The “sand” is coarse. Actually we’re walking on ground-up barnacles.
Reggie expresses his dominance over this strange, new land!

We return to camp and I pause to marvel at our home.
It may be small but it’s our castle!
Salton Sea sunsets can be spectacular.
Tonight’s sunset is more subdued than ones I’ve witnessed before. No flashes of orange and pink, no shimmering gold on the water.
Well, there are times when a colorful party dress, all bling and flash, is appropriate. Other times, a little, black dress is perfect!
