Winter’s a good time for fixing the RV!

Wednesday, December 28 (continued)

Midland Road, Blythe, California

Reggie and I board the Perfect Tow Vehicle and roll into Blythe.

We pull into Twin Palms Trailer Supply.  I don’t expect the refrigerator to have arrived.  Even so there’s that little bit of hope that springs eternally.

“Dometic told us it probably won’t be here until the 10th,” Karen tells me.

“The 10th?” I respond with surprise.

“It comes from Europe,” Chuck remarks.

“Europe?”   Gee, I’m a parrot today!

Patiently Chuck explains.

He speaks with the authority of someone who’s been in the RV service business for 37 years.  He outlines for me the history of the Dometic brand.

“It started in Europe, then they were in the U.S. for a while before the war . . . .”

Karen informs me that the model of my refrigerator was to be discontinued.  The demand convinced the company to start manufacturing it again.  (Karen had placed numerous, unsuccessful phone calls to different dealers trying to locate a fridge for me.)

That’s the reason for the delay.  We’re waiting for the fridge to be built.

Twin Palms Trailer Supply has an impressive inventory.

I brought one of two of the Best Little Trailer’s light covers.  The covers have holes in them.  You see, shortly after I picked up the BLT at the factory in Texas and before I replaced the incandescent bulbs with LEDs, the light covers became so hot that a touch of my finger put a hole in them.

For over five years I’ve been living with these two, ugly, light covers.

I never happened upon a store that had the same type as mine.  Karen walks down an aisle of their store and makes a match.  She rings up two of them for me at $3.79 each, plus tax.

LED bulbs do not give off as much heat as the incandescent.  Thus no more holes in light covers since I put nine of them in the BLT.   The investment in LEDs is worth it.  Mine have lasted a long time and they’re still going.

I wish Karen and Chuck a happy new year and join Reg in the PTV.

Our next stop is across town at the thrift store beside K-Mart.  I don’t have anything in mind to buy.  A quick browse inspires no purchases and I return to Reg.

“Since we’re not going to the library where you like to play in the grass, you get another treat.”

The word “treat” is part of Reggie’s vocabulary. Immediately he reacts. He puts his front paws on my seat and cranes his neck to place his face directly in front of mine.

“Yes, you heard me right . . . a treat!  How ’bout a burger at Carl’s Jr?  I have a feeling you’d like to eat like you mean it.”

Later, back at camp . . . . .

Camp hosts Netta and Jim drive up with their car horn a-honking.  They stop and get out, along with Max, their 12-year-old Boston terrier.

Reggie goes happy-crazy to have a canine visitor!

“Hi!  Have you got your new fridge yet?” Netta calls out, as they walk ’round to the mat side of the BLT.

She and Jim are back from the laundromat and drove over to our camp before going home.  Netta always has interesting things to say and she does so in such an engaging manner that time is forgotten. Her stories tumble out non-stop, like water splashing over rocks in a brook.  Jim is the quiet one, a perfect complement.

While we visit, Reggie and Max play hide n’ seek.

They duck around Netta’s ankles.  Soon Netta’s legs are tied up with Reggie’s tether!

Netta and Jim have their own situation involving repair.

The leveling jacks on their Class A won’t come down.  Netta tried a few “fixes” that she knows and still the jacks are being obstinate.

“Our rig is tilted. We’re walking uphill to get in and once we’re inside we’re walking downhill.  Jim pushed the button on the microwave and the door swung open and hit him in the face.”

Rather than locating some boards to re-position the rig onto them to level (It would take a lot of boards in their host campsite), they’re simply having the jacks fixed and be done with it.

“Well, we’d better get going.  The sun is setting already and we have laundry to unload.”

Inside the Best Little Trailer, I take off Reggie’s green jacket.

I can tell my boy is ready for bed.

“You had a good day, didn’t you.  A burger and then playtime with Max . . . . ”
