At home in Arizona . . . .
This is the sunrise seen from our front porch a couple days ago. It heralded the beginning of a wonderfully warm and sunny day.
That was then.
Friday, February 22
Reggie, Roger, and I step onto the front porch to greet the morning. No pink-and-purple sunrise for us today!
This is our third snow of the season in southeastern Arizona.
No fluffy, floating, swirling flakes as in the previous snows.
I think this is the closest to a blizzard I’ve seen in over a decade. In fact, I’m not sure we ever had snow like this during the years living in Georgia. We had the accumulation, but it took longer. These flakes aren’t playing; they’re driven to earth.
If snowflakes could talk . . .
“Snowing Like We Mean It!”
Reg and Rog decide to “hold it.”
“Boys, you’re gonna’ hafta’ go out there sometime. Let’s try the back yard, okay?”
As if that will be any different.
Ooh, can’t blame them for not wanting to go out in this!
A few minutes later we try the front porch again.
To the left . . .
The neighbor’s outside lights are still on.
Across the street . . .
It’s fun taking snow pics.
Good thing I loaded up the feeders before going in last night.
“Oh! The hummer’s feeder!”
The poor thing hovers around the feeder. He’s unable to find a “flower” from which to drink a sugar-water breakfast. All are covered in snow.
I ditch the camera, pull down the bill of my cap, and head out into the snowfall.
How on earth does a hummingbird fly in this!
Quickly I brush the snow off each of the plastic flowers. While making a dash to the porch, I glance over my shoulder. Already the hummer is zooming in!
From the porch I snap this photo.
Not long thereafter, the plastic flowers are covered up again. Run, brush, retreat.
This is dumb. I can’t be running out there every couple minutes. Why didn’t I put the feeder in a sheltered place?
Well, months ago I never thought it would snow like this . . . . Hmm . . . I could hang it close to the porch, under the eaves.
That’s what I do.
A few moments wondering if the hummer will see it, and, of course, he does and drinks his fill throughout the day.
Across the street a dog barks.
Reggie and Roger charge through the snow to the chain-link and bark a few “Hey, you over there! We’re over here!”
Snow is up to their bellies and chests!
It stopped snowing!
They make their way to a yucca plant under which the snow isn’t as deep.
Relief at last!
The snowfall starts up again and continues throughout the morning, not stopping until 2:30 p.m.
Saturday, February 23
More snow fell overnight. The boys and I stay inside most of the day.
Reggie settles in his bed that I placed in the dotted chair and covered with a throw.
Roger gives me a good excuse to not make the bed.
“Thanks, sweetie. Go back to sleep.”
Sunday, February 24
A sunny day. Snow is melting.
Forecast for next weekend is for temperatures in the low 70s!
