The photos in this post are scenes from Poverty Flats, a free camping area for boondockers, between Overton and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Morning Mesas
Winter has arrived in the desert!
Daytime temperatures do not climb out of the 50s and in the early morning hours they drop into the high 30s. Snuggled together, Reggie and I create a pocket of body warmth under the comforter and we sleep well, even through the really cold hours, oblivious.

The morning lows do not affect us much.
We follow our usual routine, although the first walk of the day is delayed until the air warms up some. If Reggie is given a walk, he doesn’t mind staying inside the Best Little Trailer for the remainder of the morning. . . napping mostly.

By 2 o’clock or so the sunshine at the back side of the BLT makes a pleasant outdoor “sun room.”
I move my lounger and settle in with my Paperwhite, taking periodic breaks for games of “Fetch Blue Monkey” with Reg and to watch the pair of black birds fly across the sky in front of us. I amuse myself by trying to catch them in flight with my camera.
Or I daydream while the sun shifts shadows across the badlands . . . .

Reggie gives me The Look: “Snap out of it, RVSue! It’s park time!”
Reggie runs on the carpet of grass at the park. He meets two dogs on short leashes who don’t respond to Reggie’s efforts to engage them in play.
Have they forgotten how? Did they ever know? But then . . . How does one play when on a four-foot tether?
“Reggie? You don’t know how good you have it, buddy.”
Pink clouds beyond our neighbors across the ravine at sunset
In the evening I watch a DVD on my television.
Reggie sleeps through Act One of “Les Miserables” (10th anniversary concert). The BLT rocks and shakes from the pounding wind — perfect timing! — as the full company and choir lift the roof of Royal Albert Hall with the song, “One Day More!” at the rousing conclusion of the first act. Reggie squirms slightly and returns to deep sleep, storing up more energy for the next day.
I’ll save Act Two for tomorrow night. . . . Gee, the life of a boondocker is really tough . . . .
Sunday, November 27
Windy! Man, is it windy!
The wind rocks and rattles the BLT all night.
Reggie needs a potty break around 2 a.m. (He goes to bed earlier in the winter, and, therefore, he can’t make it all the way to morning.)
The half-section of mat, the portion I saved from the first one I bought, flies and flaps furiously around the back end of the BLT, like an enraged blue ghost. It’s held by only one of the four stakes.
A terrified Reggie Man empties his bladder in a hurry and makes haste for the safety of the bed covers.

It’s late morning as I write this post.
I run outside to take these last photos. The sky is bright blue and a cold wind blows.
Well, the stake is still holding. I don’t have to climb into the ravine to retrieve the mat. Of course, with this wind it would’ve been blown to Vegas by now . . . . It better keep holding ’cause I’m not fooling with stakes in this cold . . . .

I snap the photos and hurry back inside. Brrrr! This is a perfect day for soup!
