The sun is low in the sky as Reggie and I take our last walk of the day around Cedar Pocket Campground.
The air has cooled in the fading light. RVers sit outside in camp chairs while their suppers cook on grills.
When Reggie and I approach such a group, a woman gets out of her camp chair and jogs toward us. A miniature Australian Shepherd trots alongside her at the end of a leash.
She greets us with a hello and explains.
“We drove for several hours today and my dog needs to work off her energy. Is it okay if they play? This is Beau.”
It’s a moot question at this point because the play has already begun! Reggie challenges Beau to a game of chase. Seeing this, the woman drops the leash and Beau takes off after the Rocketman!
Playtime: Part 1 — The Chase!
The campground road is wide, giving plenty of room for the race.
I struggle to capture the action. As Reggie races around the woman and me, his leash wraps around her legs. I know from experience to watch the tether in order to jump over it.
Here I am, laughing with delight at the fun our pups are having, twirling as Reggie goes ’round, jumping over the tether, helping the woman become untangled, jumping the tether again, and taking these photos all at the same time! Hilarious!
“Beau is a herder so she’s loving this!” the woman exclaims.
Reggie comes around again and crashes into Beau!
Playtime: Part 2 — Face to face combat!
“The two combatants wrestle for a paw-hold! Look at that leap!”
“Face nips are allowed. No foul!”
“Ooh, Beau attempts to throw Reggie off balance!”
“Beau hesitates and Reggie sees an opening!”
“These two are well-matched, folks! The intensity is growing with each second! Oh, my! I don’t believe this! Teeth are bared! The crowd is going wild!”
Playtime: Part 3 — The Take Down!
“Reggie flips his opponent and takes control!”
“Beau is on defense now as Reggie goes in to complete the take down!”
“This is one for the history books, folks! Rocketman is in top form tonight!”
“This round is OVER! What a battle! What a pair of competitors!”
Playtime: Part 4 — Reconciliation
Reggie and Beau . . . friends.
After several minutes of play, Beau and Reggie take a break.
This gives me a chance to grab portrait pics of the beautiful, blue-eyed lady.
What a photogenic creature!
I look around and see that the exciting, canine play has attracted some onlookers.
Having an audience propels Reggie into another circle of zooming.
“What kind of dog is that?” someone asks, while eyes follow the indefatigable Reggie with amazement.
As I answer, a man steps forward, tugged by a Jack Russell Terrier who is eager to join the action. . . . .
Oh boy, here we go again!
