Buckeye Hills Recreation Area

Thursday, February 25 (continued)

In the previous episode of “RVSue and her canine crew,” Bridget rides in her car by our camp at Buckeye Hills Recreation Area.

This photo shows Bridget’s reaction shortly after I pull her car out of the Perfect Tow Vehicle and unfold it for her.  It’s been a long time since she’s seen it.  The photo doesn’t show her wagging tail.

P1090611Bridget loves her car!

Here she is, ready to roll.  Reggie is happy that Bridget is coming with us.

Off we go . . .

Reggie’s legs are pumping. . . He’s Reg-o-matic, finally able to explore after a day of riding in the PTV and hanging around camp.  Bridget enjoys the sights as she cruises along in regal deportment.

P1090616There’s hardly any traffic on this part of the camping area.  Only one car comes up the road during our walk, and, since it’s a dead-end, the car passes us again on the way out.  This is a peaceful time, each of us enjoying it in our own way.

I enjoy taking photos, of course!

P1090615“That’s enough walking for today. You look like you’ve wound down to sanity again, Reggie.”

P1090622“Let’s head for home.  It’s almost your bedtime.”

Later . . .

The crew is asleep — Bridget stretched out on the bed and Reggie curled up in the doggie bed at the foot of our bed.  As I prepare to join them, two fighter jets roar over our house and then peacefulness returns.   I wonder what it’s like to fly a fighter jet.  What a different life from mine!

I lie in bed looking up at the stars.

The windows are open and a cool breeze wafts the curtains in the moonlight.

Gee, it’s really quiet.  We’re heading toward the weekend.  Well, we can’t expect to have perfect peace all the time . . . . but it sure is nice when we do!

Friday, February 26

P1090654After morning routine, I go online and find the location of a Wal-Mart in Buckeye.

It’s less than 10 miles from here!  As I begin to unhitch the Best Little Trailer, I notice the neighbors up the road are preparing to leave their very nice campsite.  I pause.

I could move us up there.  It’s a really big site.  A lot bigger than this one . . . .

I look around at our camp — at  the outdoor room and our view.

P1090650Hmm . . . This is a good spot for us.  The BLT is perfectly positioned to place shade on our outdoor room in the afternoon. Why move to the big site when we don’t need all that space?  Let someone else have it.  (Photo above taken after I unhitched.)

Contented with what we have, I resume cranking the coupler off the hitch ball.

Shortly thereafter, the crew and I are in the Perfect Tow Vehicle, riding out of the campground.  We stop at the divided highway, Route 85.  The yellow flowers of brittlebush cluster in mounds along the roadway.

P1090631West Hazen Road goes through fields of alfalfa.

Two horses stop grazing to watch me take their photo.

P1090632At Miller Road I turn us north again and drive into Buckeye.

I don’t bother to explore the town; we need to complete our mission before the day becomes too hot for the crew to wait in the PTV.

P1090633-001Ol’ Wal-Mart doesn’t disappoint!

I find the items I’ve gone without for several weeks — smoothies and Greek Gods yogurt.  I also score a buy on boneless, skinless chicken breasts for the crew ($1.19 a pound!) as well as a rotisserie chicken for me to share.

As I drive out of the parking lot, I see there’s a Fry’s grocery across the street (for those of you who spurn Wally).

On the return to camp, I capture this striking scene.

P1090634I wonder what the story is behind this house.  It’s situated next to the Gila River.  What used to be the Gila River and is now dried up.  I bet it was nice at one time with a view of green fields and a backdrop of hills.  (A reader gives us the history of the blue house!  See note at end of this post.)

It’s Friday night at Buckeye Hills!

Here they come!  The campground loop fills up with happy campers.  They party late into the night.  I see their lights and hear their shouts and screams through our open windows.  Fortunately they’re far enough away for their party sounds to become background noise.  Like a flock of starlings settling into a roost, their initial commotion eventually fades into silence, and the crew and I sleep well.

Saturday, February 27

The wonderful thing about nighttime revelers — They tend to sleep late!

It’s a beautiful morning and not a sound or a stir from party central. The crew and I take a short walk and then I relax in my camp chair with a blueberry smoothie for breakfast.

P1090652A big rig has moved into the site we could’ve taken yesterday.

(See photo below.)  They must’ve arrived after dark.  I bet they were relieved to find a place to park where they could fit!

P1090656That’s enough for this post!

BTW, I’m enjoying your comments very much.  Your conversations, dreams, accomplishments, concerns, helpful advice — whatever –– whether first appearances, return visits, or regular updates, all of it makes my blog come alive.  Although I’ve been “quiet” lately, know that I appreciate you and what you contribute by writing on my blog.

ABOUT THE BLUE HOUSE:

This comment came in from “Peggy in Buckeye.”

Hi Sue and the crew! I am a faithful reader who enjoys every story and every picture. As a long-time (49 years) resident of Buckeye, I just had to comment after reading today’s post. The blue house is known as the Nels Benson/ Rainey house. It was purchased by the Town of Buckeye and moved from its original location to downtown Buckeye in 2006. The plan was to restore the house and use it for offices. The move was a big event in town. People lined the streets watching the blue house make its slow and stately way though town to Main Street. Our good friend, Roy Dean, moved the house using an antique truck. My husband and I were there with our 6 year old grandson. There were too many obstacles so the restoration didn’t happen. The building sat on Monroe Avenue for a couple of years before being purchased by a private citizen who then had the house moved back close to the original location. He planned to turn it into a restaurant and brewery but that hasn’t happened either. I don’t know how to put a link to the articles in the local newspapers but a search for Nels Benson/ Rainey house will lead to more detailed information. Enjoy the Buckeye Hills! — Peggy in Buckeye
