Big Maria Mountains during “the golden hour,” before sunset, Blythe, California
Monday, February 1
The crew and I are inside most of the day while outside the wind howls and the dust obliterates the view of the McCoy Mountains to the southwest and the Big Maria Mountains to the northeast. Reggie insists on going outside several times throughout the day.
We go outside.
We turn around and come back in.
“See? I told you so. It’s too cold and windy!”
I read, online and on my Paperwhite. Bridget, the wisest of the three of us, spends her day napping, eating, and watching Reggie pick fights with his toy monkeys.
Tuesday, February 2 — A cold morning in the 30s (F)!
I’m up around 4:30 a.m. turning on the heater. I open both ceiling vents with the bathroom jar propped open. I doze off watching the red-orange glow of the Wave heater.
Around 6:30 the crew is up and wants breakfast. It’s toasty warm in our little house. A potty run reveals, although it’s cold outside, the wind has stopped!
After breakfast I put up the hummingbird feeder, filling it with 4:1 water-to-sugar mixture.
For lunch I make myself scrambled eggs with left-over stir-fry on the side.
I take my plate outside to the camp chair with attached table, along with a glass of orange juice. The sun shines brightly from the nearly cloudless sky,pleasantly warming our outdoor room. Bridget and Reggie soak up the rays and beg for bites of egg while I try to eat. I enjoy eating outside very much. A very tasty lunch!
A slight breeze is cold enough to send us inside again.
While online, I notice out the window that our hummingbird friend has returned! (Well, it looks like him. I’ll know for sure when he sings from the ironwood tree.)
Late in the afternoon Reggie and I go for a walk.
“Are you sure you don’t want to come, Bridge?”
She gives me her do-I-have-to? look.
I lift Bridget into the Best Little Trailer and up onto the bed.
“We’ll be back in a little while, honey.”
Reg and I walk the lane that you see in the next photo. If you look closely (upper left) you’ll also see our nearest neighbor, tucked among the creosote next to an ironwood tree, much like we are.
Do you remember, when you were a kid, running simply for the pure joy of it?
When Reggie and I return to our campsite, I let Bridget out and I fuss over her. This revs up Reggie’s motor and he takes off, running in circles!
Bridget comes around the back of the BLT to watch.
She stops when she spots me holding up the camera.
“Go, Reggie Man, Go!”
“Wow! You sure can run fast, little boy!”
Round and round he goes . . .
Good! The Reginator will sleep well tonight!
“Yippeeeee!”
“Hooray! We can play outside again!”
“Yay! It’s a beautiful day and I’m the fastest dog in the world!”

No matter what your situation, find something to cheer about today.
(Running full-out in circles is encouraged, but not necessary.)
