The story continues . . . .
During the week after Timber died, Rusty and I exchange emails. He shares his pain and I try to comfort him. Rusty says he is lonely and wants to adopt another dog.

Immediately I send a reply.
In that email I caution Rusty about bringing home another dog too soon, that grieving takes time, that he might not be able to bond with another dog this quickly after Timber’s death, blah, blah, blah.
The standard, knee-jerk advice. Which Rusty doesn’t follow.
Instead he follows his heart.
Later, another email . . .
“I’m typing to tell you that I bonded with a 2-year-old, mellow, female, pure breed Husky named Piper. She is at the vet getting spayed, shots, and chipped. I purchased her at the humane shelter in Flagstaff, AZ for $100.00. I told the nice lady my story of the past with Timber and told her of his passing and we both cried. She kind of knows him from the newspaper back in 2012 and took me back to meet Piper. I fell in Love. Piper is white with gray and black and her eyes are pure white.”
Here she is!
Isn’t she gorgeous!
Subsequent emails from Rusty give evidence that he and Lady Piper — Rusty added that special touch to Piper’s name — are getting along splendidly.
“She’s a keeper alright . . . . Today we went for a walk the fourth time and a rabbit jumped out in front of her. She stopped, her ears went up, she turned to me and I said ‘no,’ and the rabbit didn’t get chased. I’m keeping this dog. She’s my girl . . . . “
Rusty will miss Timber for a long time.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t room in his heart and in his home for Lady Piper!
As Rusty says, “Together we start a new journey.”
