Running free on an Oregon beach! Pure joy!

Thursday, June 11

We’re going back to the beach today!

P1050663The crew and I break camp early.

Blackberry Campground along the Alsea River would provide a quiet, inexpensive “home base” for exploring the central Oregon coast except for one thing.

I have to have internet!

For this reason the Best Little Trailer accompanies us to the beach.  At Alsea Bay we turn northward.

P1050610 - CopyI drive us a few miles beyond Waldport.

P1050660Hmm . . . Driftwood State Park, a day-use-only park.  This looks good.

“Well, this is it, guys.”

We’re on the beach!

No one is around, it being before 9 a.m.  There’s very little fog or wind, the air is cool but not too cool, and the crew is excited to be back on the sand.  I am, too!

As soon as I unclip the leash from Reggie’s camo suit, he takes off!

He goes much further than this photo shows, almost completely out of sight.

P1050645 - Copy“Oh my gosh!  Look at that boy run!”

Up the beach he goes until he’s nothing more than a dot.  He turns and races toward Bridget and me.

“Here he comes!”

P1050632-001 - Copy Zoooooom!

P1050632 - Copy“And there he goes!  Oh my gosh, he’s having so much fun!”

P1050631 - CopyRound and round, up and down the beach . . .

P1050630 - CopyOkay . . . .You may be wondering why Bridget is not shown in these photos.

I unclip her leash and she wanders around in the sand.  I bend my knees in order to take a photo of her at her level.

She turns her back on me and walks away.

P1050614 - Copy“Oh, Bridgie, come on, honey.  It’s only a camera.”

No dice.  Darn.  She’s in her stubborn mood.

Meanwhile Reggie hasn’t let up.

P1050639 - CopyI can’t stop laughing at the sight of his joyful abandon!

P1050635 - CopyReggie zooms over waves of sand.

I call them waves because they’re dunes shaped that way — a gradual slope on one side rising to a crest and then dropping off on the other side.

I wish I had photos to show you the action!  Reggie races up a wave of sand.  I don’t think he anticipates what happens next.  He reaches the crest and suddenly he’s airborne!  His little body flies through the air, lands in the soft sand, and without pause, spins out, and away he goes again, a sand plume trailing out behind him!

I’m laughing so hard, non-stop, that tears run down my cheeks.

P1050634 - CopyI twirl as I try to catch him with my camera before he speeds out of the frame.

I end up with an extensive photo collection of Reggie’s back paws and the tip of his tail.  Also some photos of empty sand.

Suddenly Reggie stops.

He searches for Bridget and spies her sitting with her back to us.  He sprints over to her.

P1050657He circles the Bridge in an effort to engage her in play.  It’s no use, Reggie.  When she’s in one of her moods, nothing but time will bring her out of it.

P1050653Nice try, little guy . . . .

P1050648 - CopyBridget refuses to move, so Reggie resumes playing.  (See flight at right.)

Note:  Some of these photos are very grainy and blurry. That’s because Reggie ran so far away in many of the shots that I enlarged them a great deal in editing in order to make the action visible.  Then I cropped the photos to fit here.

P1050646-001The photo at right is an example . . .

Curious what Reggie looks like in the fourth photo above, I enlarged and cropped so we could see a close-up.

Oh my.  Is this a happy pup or what?

More zooming around and in a puff of sand, Reggie stops in his tracks.

He’s discovered buried treasure!

“What have you got there, boy?”

He pulls the empty crab shell out of the sand.

The crab leg, with claw attached, comes off.  This thrills Reggie.  A new toy!  With crab leg dangling out the side of his mouth like a broken cigar, he runs across the sand with delight, making figure eights and flying off sand waves.

He seems to be proclaiming, “Look what I’ve got!”

“This is hilarious!”  I have to sit down in the sand.  “I’ve never laughed so hard in all my life!”

P1050654Reggie takes a break, too, beside his crab claw toy.

I call to Bridget but she keeps her back turned away from me.  I walk over to her and stroke her face.

“Okay, sweetie, we’ll go.  It looks like Reggie’s had enough anyway.”

I clip the leashes to their suits and the three of us walk up the path to the Perfect Tow Vehicle.  After Bridget and Reggie have a drink, I boost them inside.  Bridget chooses the passenger seat.  I climb in behind the wheel, take a swig from my water bottle, and turn the ignition key.

“Well, that was FUN!”

P1050559 - Copy“And look who’s happy NOW!”  I pat her cheek.  “You dopey girl!”
