Corvina Beach Primitive Campground

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Anticipating an influx of weekend campers and day-use people, I move the Best Little Trailer out of popular Salt Creek Beach Primitive Campground.

I find a better camp at Corvina Beach Primitive Campground!

1-P1020643 - CopyInstead of setting up camp where everyone else does, I drive to the end of the wide dirt road that parallels the beach at the far end of the campground.  I position the BLT near the edge of a low bluff.

1-P1020645 - CopyAlthough we’re within the campground, few people come out this far and there’s little chance of neighbors.  These photos explain better than I can why this is a fine camp!

1-P1020647 - CopyOf course, Bridget wants to explore!

1-P1020655 - CopyFar in the background of the photo above, you can see our nearest neighbors.  That’s where the restrooms are and the — hold your breath — the showers!

1-P1020659 - CopyAnother surprise is the two-dollar discount for seniors, making the fee at Corvina Beach $8 a night.  (I’m not aware of a discount at Salt Creek Primitive.)

I found a lot of incorrect information on the internet regarding Corvina Beach Primitive Campground.

I assume this is because of recent improvements.  There are two large shelters over picnic tables set over a concrete slab.  In addition there are flush toilets, water spigot, trash bins, and two large shower rooms. Alas, no hot water.  At 88 degree air temperature in the afternoon, cold water is fine with me.  Invigorating!

What it doesn’t have is hundreds of birds at the water’s edge.  Oh well, I can suffer watching only thirty of forty . . . or one at a time.

1-P1020654 - CopyWe came here Friday morning and it’s Saturday morning as I type this.  No one has driven by our camp during that time.  I haven’t seen anyone walk the beach in front of our camp.

1-P1020648 - CopyI recently finished two books that had me laughing myself silly.

Dove Season (A Jimmy Veeder Fiasco) and Big Maria, both by Johnny Shaw.

Shaw was born and raised in the Imperial Valley and his novels include places such as Yuma, the Army Proving Ground, Gordon’s Well, the Algodones Dunes, Brawley, Calexico, Mexicali, Plaster City, and the Salton Sea.  Hilarious characters and dialogue (although I warn you, there’s bad language and graphic situations).

In Big Maria, for instance. . . .  The book opens as the main character, who has a ramshackle shuttle service business,  drives several retirees in his bus from Blythe to Los Algodones for eyeglasses and dental appointments.

1-P1020667 - CopyHere’s a sample of Shaw’s writing style (and a refreshing contrast to what I’ve written about the desert).  This is from Chapter 1 of Dove Season.

“In the desert even the plants have chips on their shoulders.  They’re water-starved and sunburned fighters.  Forced to wrestle their way through rock and earth.  Cactus, yucca, and saw grass can all draw blood.  No one goes to the desert to see the fall colors, mostly brownish.

There are no cute calendars devoted to the creatures of the desert floor.  Whether a rattlesnake or a scorpion or a centipede, under every rock some scaly, poisonous monster waits for the chance to bite the next unsuspecting ankle.  Even a desert hare will take a finger off the dumb*#* that tries to pet it.  If the desert can make a bunny that angry, imagine what it does to the people.”  — Dove Season (A Jimmy Veeder Fiasco)

The kindle ebook versions are $3.99 at present.  If you can tolerate the swearing (realistic to the characters), these two novels give a lot of entertainment for a few dollars.

1-P1020671Here it is mid-February already!

I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.  You know?  A sweetheart isn’t necessary in order to celebrate this holiday.  You can love this day, and you can love yourself.
