Look who the wind blew in!

As each day goes by . . .

Here at our camp at Midland LTVA near Blythe, California, more news and tidbits accumulate that I would like to share with you.  I’ve tried to focus on doing just that but my efforts to put together the details fizzle out each time.  That will have to wait for another post or two.

Right now the desert wind is running things.

Reggie and I are cocooned in the Best Little Trailer, driven inside by the windblown dust that has turned the mountains into fuzzy, cut-out shapes.

Oh, gee, there goes the mat!   I go out in the wind for a few minutes in order to secure it.

The wind had pulled up the stakes at two corners and the blue mat flails against me like a prisoner fighting for an escape to freedom.

After a few attempts with my hammer I find firm ground to hold the stakes and the mat.

Let’s go back to . . .

Wednesday, December 14

In a comment under a previous thread I invited Rusty and Piper to come over to Midland LTVA to camp.

(You can camp here for free for a couple days, or you can buy a permit for $40 good for 14 days, or you can spend $180 on a permit good for camping September 15 – April 15.)

Rusty and Lady Piper arrive in the afternoon.

Rusty and I exchange hello-good-to-see-ya-agains and he gives me an early Christmas gift of a package of large and luscious strawberries.  (Photo taken after I had eaten most of them!)

“Thank you, Rusty!”

Lady Piper whines in the truck, wanting to get out, of course.

The photos tell the rest of the story . . . .

Hi! Fourth!!! Haven;t been that close in ages!

  6. Chris(MN once but now AZ for the winter) says:

It always brightens my day to see Reggie happy and playing! I hope that he doesn’t blow away in this wind!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

I’m keeping Reggie inside! He had a potty run and a visit with Lady Piper during a lull in the wind. He’s sitting on the bed next to me now and that’s where he’s going to stay. The dust is really thick in this wind.

  7. Jean in Southaven, MS says:

Hey I am close to the top.

  8. Jean in Southaven, MS says:

Now I can go read. Hi Rusty, so glad to see you. Love this blog!

  9. Suzette (TN) says:

So happy that I was right! It’s RUSTY! Yay! It’s good to see him and Lady Piper. Thanks for sharing their visit.

  10. Kristi & Daisie (Nampa, ID) says:

It almost looks like Reggie has met his match in energy level with Lady Piper. Good to see Rusty & Piper again. Hope your winds die down soon and the pups can play some more.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Kristi & Daisie,

I’m sure Piper and Reggie will have several play times together over the next two weeks. The winds will last a day or two and then all will be calm again. Cleans up the desert. 🙂

  11. Stephanie Albany OR says:

Loving the pics of the doggie meet, greet and action! That Reggie is a whirlwind (no pun intended) of activity. May calmer winds prevail. Have a wonderful visit.

  12. Barb from Hoquiam says:

    Yay!!!
Happy Christmas, Sue, Rusty and the kids!!!
I am getting into the spirit a bit. Made candied orange peel today. My daughters love it. Yum.

It is cold here. No snow for us this time ’round, but wow OR got it good. A friend lost her pickup under a huge tree that fell.

    Have fun you guys!
    Hugs from Hoquiam,
    Barb

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Sorry about your friend, Barb. I heard that Redmond received 19 inches of snow…

How does one make candied orange peel? If you don’t mind telling us and it’s not too complicated…

      • Barb from Hoquiam! says:

        Hi Sue!
Well, my friend in Eugene had to go into work the day after the tree fell… much in her life up in the air of course! Guess what? When she got home, friends (unbeknownst to her) had cleared a pathway to her house of this huge tree (her truck is pretty much toast, but it was old and had been given to her–so no great financial loss–though many people used it for various things… ) and begun cutting up the wood. I believe it was oak-so some of her friends were taking ‘dibs’ on using it for artwork and not firewood! This tree was HUMONGOUS! Now that — that is a community of friends! 🙂

Candied Orange Peel is really really wonderful and a cheap and pretty easy (though takes time) confection. I have made it for years, and my kids enjoy it… I have put the simple recipe below in a link (my own old recipe is more convoluted and I have adapted it to pretty much this one at this point).
        The great thing is–you can
        1) Eat the plain orange slices… or cook with them
        2) Save the sugar you use for cookies or in tea (Yummerific)
        3) The syrup from the cooking can be used for pancakes or whatever (though, get past the color… it is sort of, well… it is yellow 😛 )
        4) You can fancy it up by dipping the peel in chocolate 🙂
        OH WOW!
        5) Nearly forgot–the ends and innards of the orange I don’t use, I dry and put in with cloves on the stove for potpourri.
So basically, you use the entire orange — other than the sticker . 🙂 Pretty thrifty.
Here is the basic recipe… I use a combination of white sugar and ‘raw’ sugar… I like the taste of the raw sugar and the chunkiness of it… 🙂 But the white helps to get it all covered.

        http://www.glorioustreats.com/2015/11/candied-orange-peel.html

Off to do the final bit of holiday shopping for teens today. Our local Salvation Army does well for little kids, but after 14 they don’t have the resources–most teens get lost in the mix. 🙁

Hugs from our (BRRRRR–COLD) house in Hoquiam, to yours!
        Barb

  13. Beth, near Congress says:

Oh how look how much fun Reggie and Piper are having!! lol !!

I’ve been wondering how you’re doing because I saw the weather forecast for your area!! Big big winds!!

Glad Rusty and Piper made it there, and bringing yummy looking strawberries, too!!

You all hang in there! Literally!! Be safe and have fun! I hope those winds die down!!

  14. Dawn in NC says:

A Rusty and Sue, Reggie and Piper Reunion! How delightful!

  15. Rochelle in IN says:

YAY! I really needed a smile – it has been a heck of a day here at work! Love, love, LOVE the pics of Piper and Reggie having fun together. Hope you weather the winds well!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Hi, Rochelle…. I hope you’re still smiling and you have the weekend off from work.

You love, love, LOVE the dog action pics and I love, love, LOVE sharing them with you!

  16. Vicky in PA says:

    Hello Sue, am I first?

  17. Claudia says:

Merry Christmas to YOU & REGGIE. GOD bless

  18. Vicky in PA says:

Sorry, there was a delay in previous comments. Maybe next time! Glad you got to visit with Rusty and Piper.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

No apology needed. That’s been happening to readers lately. They open up the blog and it looks like no one or very few have commented, when that isn’t the case.

Oh well…. Great hearing from you, Vicky!

  19. Sharon Coquet says:

Like watching the dogs play. Your pictures Sue are the best. Thank u for taking so many pics and sharing them with us. Good seeing Rusty and Piper.
May you have a great Christmas.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      You’re welcome, Sharon,

You’ve been riding with us for a long time. I’m happy to see you here! Thanks for the Christmas wish. I hope the same for you!

  20. Helen Lusk says:

Thank you for your blog. Each time I see it I get excited. I hope your holidays are grand.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Helen,

Welcome to blogorinoland! I hope you will come by here often. I’m very pleased that you’re excited to see my posts appear. Enjoy the holidays!

  21. Vicki & Kitty campin'... now in the low desert of CA ... how cool is that! says:

    Batten down the hatches Sue!!
We’re getting some wind here too.
So nice to see Rusty & Piper again!
I hope you have a great visist!
OM Gosh it is just too funny watching Reggie & Piper play. I love it.
    Hang in there.
    Hugs

    • rvsueandcrew says:

You “hang in there,” too, Vicki & Kitty.

It’s a good thing Reggie and Piper had a chance to play because there aren’t any play dates when the air is full of dust like this. Reggie pestered me and pestered me. I let him outside and he walked around and then, “Okay, RVSue, I see what you mean. This is NOT fun!” He came inside and went to bed!

Don’t let the wind blow Kitty away!

  22. weather says:

Gee, I’m so glad it worked out for Rusty to be able to camp near you for a while. And that Reggie and Piper will get to be with each other during your daily visits. It’s always especially nice for friends to get together when “the kids” get along well, too. I love the third photo in this post with the pups climbing on Rusty to try to reach other 🙂 !

The photo above “Thank you…”shows how much space you were able to leave between your homes, each have your own private time and tree, lots of room and still know no one else will camp between you.Sweet ! It occurs to me that because Rusty will be moving into a house fairly soon this may be the last chance you two have to share desert camping while you’re still both full timers. It’s wonderful that sharing Christmas with each other is part of that gift.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, weather,

I hope all is snug at your house this wintry evening! Your comments here always carry warmth and comfort our way….

That photo is my favorite, too, of this batch. I like pictures showing the intense connection and silent communication that can occur between canines. Reggie’s eagerness to be with another dog — standing on tiptoe, it seems — touches my heart.

I hadn’t thought about this probably being the last chance for Rusty and me to be camp neighbors. 🙂 I hope you find your neighbors a blessing to your life, too.

  23. Dawn in MI says:

So glad to see Rusty and Lady Piper! I just mailed their Christmas card today! Boy, it looks like Reggie and Lady Piper had a great time playing together! I’m glad they got to visit, and I’m glad you two got to visit too.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Hi, Dawn…. Reg and I walked over to see Rusty and Piper for a few minutes during a lull in the wind. Of course, the dogs were happy to see each other. Piper has a very mellow personality. She settled down and watched Reggie sniffing around. Reminded me of the way Bridget used to watch him, kind of like a babysitter. 🙂

    • Merry Christmas to you Dawn and thanks for the card, but it will stay at the box till we get our home up in Yavapai County and be a surprise again when it gets forwarded to us,, we are to south to go to Havasu and from here we’ll be heading back towards the Prescott area in January, bruuurr up there now,, thanks again and stay safe and warm to you and Katly, give her some belly rubs from us, ok,,,,, 👣🐾

  24. Ken Canada says:

    Hi sue….

    Love those dogs….great fun!
    Great pictures

  25. Cinandjules (da zone) says:

Stabilizers down! Although rocking can be soothing!
Hahhh. The photo of Reg man in the air made me laugh out loud! Go go go! Oops I almost wrote Tim…….Piper looks like she’s ready to help run some energy off Reg man! Someone’s gonna sleep thru the night! The last photo reminds me of a bull…digging at the ground!
Strawberries look tasty! Good times with Rusty. Glad he got the delivery and was able to meet up with you!
    Enjoy
    PS…got our AZ DL’s today!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Congratulations! You got your drivers’ licenses making you official zonies! Are you feeling Christmas-y living in the desert? Put up a tree and decorations?

      • Cinandjules (da zone) says:

ANnie Oakley’s favoritest uncle….decorated the tree when he was here!

We “zoned out” just in time! Jules’ dad couldn’t get the John Deere thru the snow on our property. Four inches an hour at one point…for a total of 18 inches! – 20 this morning..don’t miss my nostrils sticking together taking AO out on her pee runs!
        Osceola NY got 90 inches!

Thinking about you…weather…stay warm with your fur kids!

  26. Cynthia from San Clemente says:

Lady Piper and Reg look like they had a blast together, and I’m sure you and Rusty enjoyed visiting. I love the soft light in the next-to-last photo (the one of Reg turning and looking around). Was it early morning or evening?

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Cynthia,

Thank you for appreciating the photo of the mountains, Reggie, and the two camps. It was taken at sunset. The grey-brown mountains seem to light up at that time. Although I don’t think that will happen today because of the dust.

  27. Ken Canada says:

    Sue….
What kind of camera do you have
    Thank you

    • Deena in Phoenix, AZ says:

Ken, Sue’s camera is posted in the sidebar “My Camera” Panasonic Lumix under the Weather Info. It is her Amazon Link.
      Deena

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Ken… Deena is right about my camera.

I love it. I’m rough on my cameras. This one has been swung into things, been dropped, lens opened to wind, what have you. I like it because it has excellent image stabilization because I take my photos while doing other things (not very careful!) and also the 60X zoom is such fun. It has many more features than I ever use without being a pain for someone like me to operate.

Of course, there are better cameras available, but for the price, this one has been worth every penny. I suppose there are newer models in this price range that are good also.

  28. Norman in San Diego says:

    Hi Sue,

Happy Friday greetings from windy and rainy San Diego. I wonder if our rain will make it to you.
Have a wonderful weekend rocking and rolling in the wind.

    Norman

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Happy Weekend Greetings to you, Norman!

The rain may miss us. Right now it doesn’t smell or look like rain is imminent. It really would be kind of nice to have some rain to tamp down the dust in the air. So send some our way!

I do enjoy hearing from you. Thanks for keeping in touch.

  29. Cat Lady says:

Good to know ya’ll have company for the holidays. The pups are glad to see each other. Now you can get the rotisserie chicken since the 4 of you should be able to polish it off quickly.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Hahaha! Hi, Cat Lady! It’s funny how blogorinos care about the rotisserie chicken situation! I’ll have to check with Rusty about that plan. He’s very particular about what he eats, trying to stay healthy and all…

  30. Deena in Phoenix, AZ says:

    Joyful Post!

Happy to see Lady Piper and Rusty… joy in the Pup’s greeting and racing time…joy in knowing that Ya’ll are having a wonderful time in the LTVA….

    Deena and Miss Mollie

  31. Kat and Cookie Dog in NYState says:

Merry Christmas to you and Rusty, your dogs sure look like they are having a blast playing together! Don’t blow away, wind here has been so bad with wind chill going below 0 degrees F. I am officially old as I can’t stand these temperatures anymore. Cookie Dog feels about same way I do. We are old together, and hating this snow and cold. Gotta find a camper………..

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Kat and Cookie,

Whoa! You are in an awfully cold winter blast! I understand about not being able to stand the bitter cold any more. I hope you do find a camper!

  32. Jan NH says:

So wonderful that Rusty and Piper were able to make it for a visit. Love the pics of Piper and Reggie playing together. They look like they are having a great time.
Enjoy your visit and a very Merry Christmas to you both!

  33. Pookie and Chuck in Todd Mission Tx says:

its so good to see Sue and Rusty visiting………Rusty is looking good…
Sue will you make it to the salt lake this year?
    thanks
    chuck and pookie

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, chuck,

Do you mean THE salt lake or the Salton Sea? I don’t plan on going to Salt Lake but I do want to camp at the Salton Sea again. 🙂

  34. Chuck Hajek says:

WOW !!! Rocketman and Lady Piper must have had a ball! Wore me out lookin’ at the pics!!! Glad Rusty and y’all can get together. Please pass on a hearty Merry Christmas to him from us!

  35. DesertGinger says:

In that last picture of Reggie, that is the classic Jack Russell side-eye stare. All Jacks do that where they are looking out the side of their eyes, right before they pounce.

Glad to see Rusty and Piper looking so good.

    Hugs to all.

  36. Cheryl says:

Really great pictures. They look like they are having a great time!

  37. DeAnne in TN says:

    Yay!!! Christmas Break!!!

  38. So wonderful to see the two of them again! Looks like Reggie and Piper had the time of their lives :-)))) Hope the winds die down and you get some nice outside weather.

  39. kgdan from Wapato, WA says:

    Hello, Everyone!
I feel compelled to do a psa to all our snowbird friends in the southwest.

Recently I have undergone a number of medical tests; one of which was a lung biopsy. While the thing drs. were looking for was not present, I was surprised to learn that my lungs have a fungal infection that they believe originated in the southwest— I’m suspecting ‘Valley Fever’.

Next week I visit a Dr. at the Infectious Disease Clinic here for more tests. They will be sent UC Davis in CA. for analysis. As we typically spend at least 6 months in the southwest likely I picked up whatever it is there. Wanted to let you all know this as a precaution.

    Snow, snow, snow here.

    • Marilu in Northern California says:

Thanks for that information. Since we spend some time in the southwest each year it is worth keeping in mind. It won’t keep me out of the desert though😃

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Thanks, kgdan, for the reminder. Wishing you the best results from those tests!

  40. AZ Jim says:

Hi Missy, we got a little of the wind here too and a little rain as well. I’m glad you and Rusty will be together for Christmas. It will be quiet here in our home, but I have Detta and she has me. I see Rusty in that one shot down on his knee, if that was me my 80 year old knees would say no way Jose, and I’d be down unable to right myself without something to hold on to. When I lived in South Dakota I slipped on ice and had to crawl about 20 or so feet to a tree stump to help me get up. It’s hell to be beat up like this. Oh well, I refuse to get knee surgery…. Listen you and Reggie have a great holiday out there and as always, be careful…Hi to Rusty and Piper….

  41. Hi Sue, Rusty and pups! Have a great visit and peaceful Christmas! We are in a cold snap here in NE Washington state. Hovering around zero for 2 wks, more to come. Keeping the fire burning and made big pot of soup. Stay safe.

  42. Linda Rose, Muffin, Murphy, Molly & Midgy says:

So glad the 4 of you could get together. Sorry about the wind. Hopefully it’s died down and you’re enjoying better weather. I’m heading down to Indio and then maybe to Blythe where some friends are camp hosting. Merry Christmas Sue. Snuggles to Reggie from me and the 4 M’s.

  43. gayle beach boomer says:

Wow, that last photo really captures the essence of the Reggie/Piper meet & greet. Do you have a sense of knowing that you got the photos you want at the time you take them? Or do you just shoot and figure it out later? Either way, you get it done well!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, gayle!

Sometimes I see a great scene before I shoot, other times I find a good picture after the shot. It’s fun to crop out the best part of a not-so-great photo and reveal something worthwhile.

The two photos of Reggie at the truck illustrate how a good photo can be anticipated easily. I took the first one and then I expected that Piper’s head would appear… and waited for it. Fun when it works!

  44. Diann in MT says:

Happy, Happy, Happy! YAY The Rusty and Piper are looking soooo good! What a gift–both the strawberries and the visit. I love that last photo of Reggie!

Wind is always not fun. By comparison: it’s -20 with 12″ snow on the ground here! You just can’t get away from the weather!

    Keep safe and warm, Sue.

  45. Eileen Dykeman says:

Piper looks just like my granddog, who I nick-named “Red” because of his beautiful coat. Red had a brother, Alexei, who had lived to reach the golden canine age of “13” before having to be euthanized last year. However, Red still has three cats in the household to keep him company when his humans go off to work each day.

  46. Krystina McMorrow says:

I am so happy to see Rusty and Piper with you…and for Christmas! They are looking well!!! I love the pictures of the pups playing. Sure wish I could run around like that…LOL. Wind blowing the sand….UGH. That doesn’t sound like fun. It is below zero here in Vermont. Love listening to the furnace run constantly…NOT!! I now have a brand new granddaughter!!! Gianna Ryan. She is sooooo tiny…6′ 12 ounces…two weeks early. ADORABLE!! I am now volunteering at H.O.P.E (helping other people everyday) in Lyndonville, VT and I am LOVING it!! Merry Christmas to everybody!! Enjoy your time with Rusty and Piper. xxoo

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      ANOTHER GRANDDAUGHTER! CONGRATULATIONS, KRYSTINA!

I know you are thrilled to be with your girls… all three of them. 🙂

Best wishes to you and your family. You are where you should be right now and I’m very happy for you!

  47. Virginia620 (AL) says:

Catch me if you can!! Love this post.
Merry Christmas Rusty, Piper, Sue, Reggie, ALL blogerinno family.
Sue, I want to apologize if my prior question about haboobs brought on the windy dust. 😣
Attending an outdoor wedding this afternoon at historic DAR House. Temps supposed to reach mid-70s today. 😄
Amazon order ink stamp pads for part of granddaughter’s Christmas.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Virginia!

When I started reading “attending an outdoor wedding this afternoon” I gasped thinking of the really bitter cold, the ice and snow, in some parts of the country and the strong winds in other parts… Then I remembered you’re in balmy Alabama..

Thanks for the Amazon order! I see the stamp pads! 🙂

  48. Karen from Ft. Wayne says:

    Hi Sue,
I’d take the wind right now over the ice we woke up. Going to be a long winter. After 166 more days I won’t care. Big retirement coming up. Glad Rusty and Lady Piper were able to come for a visit.
    Take care,

    • AZ Jim says:

Count those days is a great memory for me. When I walked out of that office and through the gate I felt like a huge weight was off my shoulders. Life is so much nicer without the work…..I have been retired for 25 years now and still remember the spring in my step as I walked out of the place I had spent the last 30 years working at. You will LOVE it!!! Congratulations in advance.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Jim is right, Karen. Retirement is the best! You will LOVE it!

  49. Pam and Maya, Still in NY says:

Love this post, playing pups, company with Rusty and a recipe for candied orange peel! That Arizona wind was one reason I wanted a new hard-sided camper. I was really rocking and rolling in the pop-up. Hopefully I will be able to make my dreams come true!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Pam!

I’m going to rewrite your last sentence right here…. Take out “Hopefully….

“I will be able to make my dreams come true!” Yes, you will! 🙂

  50. chas anderson says:

I am jealous.Wife refuses to leave home until after the holidays.I can do without my brother in laws and his horde.Meanwhile, I just plowed for the fifth straight day.I live way up on a ridge above town and we get snow dusting almost every night.have to scrape it since it is a 1200 foot switchback up the cliff to get out.I will be in AZ in January though.

Dogs are cute.Piper looks just like old Juice who was a Husky mix. Those blue eyes.

    • AZ Jim says:

The two dogs playing photos are great but my favorite is little Reggie feet up on Rusty welcoming Rusty and Piper to camp.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Oh, chas, I feel your pain. Be careful out there in the weather, scraping your road. You are going to be so happy when January comes and you’re in warm Arizona watching another spectacular sunset….

  51. Chris B and Diego says:

Welcome to California! Land of people who beg to be controlled by the government! I voted no on that one but it didn’t work out. Another good one on the ballot was forcing porn stars to wear condoms. I voted no on that, too! As a matter of fact, I somehow received a “which way to vote” from the governor of California and the first thing I did was vote opposite of what he recommended. Then I read the information and I didn’t have to change a thing! It was all right where I wanted it! LOL! Things just keep getting crazier and crazier here! I’ve been here my whole life and the people have definitely been replaced by the crazies!

Nice shots of Lady Piper and Rocketman. As always, nice to see Lady’s dad, Rusty. I like how you and Rusty have your occasion rendezvous. How many years is this now?

Our next trip is our visit Quartzsite. We always have an interesting time there and enjoy browsing the aisles.

    Chris B and Diego

    • Joyce Sutton says:

Omg I don’t want to start a discussion but is this for real or a joke. I can’t resist. I would definitely want a yes vote on that one but how is the government going to enforce that one? Sorry Sue lol

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Chris B and Diego,

Happy to see you appear here again! I got a laugh out of your take on California people. Oh, dear… I’d better not say more or I’ll make folks mad and wanting the government to control ME! Haha!

(Love you, California readers, just joking here)…

  52. Val R. Lakefield On. says:

How nice that Rusty & Piper are visiting over Christmas. Looks like Reg is certainly
happy about it. I smile every time I see those playful pics of him.

Ahhh, one stress event over today in our lives!! YEA!! Now onto the next ones to see what goes there…Daughter still has some hope, via a phone call, for a job farther south…so we shall see!! Hope you have a nice, peaceful stay there!! With less wind!!

Sue, as a cause/effect question… Now that you only post a new post every week or so it seems, have your Amazon sales suffered? Just curious…

      Hi, Larry!

No, my Amazon sales have not suffered. Your premise is incorrect. For instance I have posted 4 times in the past 7 days which is hardly “every week or so.” Maybe you are going by the orange headings which are the dates of the story, rather than the small, gray print above the heading which is the actual date of posting.

Rusty looks so handsome in his western wear!
