Hole-in-the-Wall Campground, Mojave Preserve, California
Reggie is outfitted in his orange fleece vest for our early morning walk around the campground.
It’s chilly! All the time I’ve traveled the Southwest with my canine crew, I’m still surprised by the fresh coolness of morning, regardless of the heat during the afternoons.
People are stirring, in and around their RVs.
Tenters and van dwellers scurry to the vault toilets. They prepare their breakfasts at picnic tables while RVers mostly stay inside.
The campground filled up late in the day yesterday . . . three fiberglass trailers, two teardrop trailers, a Class B, a van or two, a Class C, a fifth wheel, and loads of tenters.
I try to be discreet while taking photos.
Here’s a teardrop trailer, photographed while the occupants are gone . . . on an early morning drive perhaps?
Reggie briefly meets a dog, part chihuahua and part terrier, according to the owner.
Reggie marks his territory in several places. Word is out to all canine campers: The Reggie Man is here!
“Yee-haaa!”
Often the tent campsites are the nicest ones of all.
Reg and I walk the path to one very private site.
I notice a wide, wavy line in the gravel.
Uh-oh, that’s no rodent tail . . . . It looks like a . . .
“C-mon, Reg. Let’s get out of here.”

By the time we return to our campsite, we’re both hungry for breakfast.
In order to keep cool, we spend the day in the shade of the BLT or inside in the breeze of our fan. I wash a bin full of dirty dishes I’ve been saving for this special occasion.
Another walk at dusk . . . .
Many campers leave Hole-in-the-Wall while more are coming in.
Before dark I pack up everything not needed in the morning. The BLT is still hitched to the Perfect Tow Vehicle. We should be able to make an early start tomorrow.
Tuesday, March 14
Reggie and I awake at daybreak. I give him a short walk near our campsite and then we have a light breakfast.
As soon as tenters come out of their tents, Reg and I ride the Perfect Tow Vehicle across the campground and out onto Black Canyon Road. I take a few parting shots of the campground.
Then we ride slowly through the Mojave Preserve and head northward to our next camp!
