The lights of Overton, Nevada, as seen from Snowbird Mesa (Poverty Flats) at dusk
My refrigerator quit.
I cleaned the outside compartment of dust, checked that the thermostat is in position, adjusted the little screw regulating the propane flow at the ignition, tweaked this, twiddled with that, cussed and cajoled, and there it sits yet, a mute, hulking, defiant dullard.
Well, so be it.
My heater can’t heat (propane leak) and my refrigerator can’t cool. There’s probably an RV services place, northeast of Overton, up the interstate in Mesquite. That would be backtracking and I don’t want to do that.
The other choice is Vegas.
After a few minutes online I find Affordable RV Service and Repair. I haven’t made an appointment yet. I’m not in a hurry to do so because when I drive south to Vegas with the Best Little Trailer I know I won’t come back to the mesa. And I want to stay at Poverty Flats through Thanksgiving weekend and beyond.
Living without a refrigerator is not a hardship.
No sense worrying about it. No refrigeration gives me an excuse to toss Reg into the Perfect Tow Vehicle and drive the 3 miles into town every day for our main meal. The rest of the time I can eat fresh fruit, protein bars, peanut butter and crackers, and other stuff from my cupboard.
A library card!
Upon the suggestion of one of the Poverty Flats regulars, I stop at the Moapa Valley Library in Overton and obtain a library card.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve been in a library.
My, how they’ve changed! This particular library has thousands of DVDs! Fiction and nonfiction, movies and television shows, you name it.
I forget how many you’re allowed to check out at a time, but I walked out with seven DVDs and I can keep them for a week or more, depending upon the title.
Winter nights are long without entertainment.
My Paperwhite helps, of course. Some nights I don’t feel like reading though, and having a couple DVDs handy is nice.
Finding movies and tv shows that fit my taste is challenging. I peruse the floor to ceiling shelves, become overwhelmed by the number of choices, then claustophobic. I grab some DVDS and flee to the check-out desk.
At the moment I have Downton Abbey (saw it years ago), a collection of Austin City Limits, a pair of Richard Burton flicks (I know, lame), and a few total duds that will remain in their cases having failed their audition in my television/DVD player.
I don’t doubt there are better choices. I’ll surely do better next time!
Hey! Do you want to see Tater?
Recently in comments under a previous post I shared with you my friend’s excitement over the new member of her household. Chuck and Geri found the perfect dog at their local rescue shelter.
His name is Tater and he’s 7 years old.
Here’s Geri’s account of meeting Tater: “a fat ugly dog with 2 bottom teeth sticking straight up! But . . . the sweetest eyes that smile and a grin . . . . we knew he was coming home. Then that’s when we realized why he had been returned 3 times. Tater farts!”
Geri reports that canned pumpkin has taken care of Tater’s gas and Radar likes his new house buddy, whose presence comforts him after the passing of DoogieBowser.
Geri says it seems like Tater has been a member of the family for years. Scroll down to meet Tater!
