Transformations at Lone Rock and the town crier returns

Thursday, September 29

Immense clouds sail across the sky.

P1140326All day there’s no sign of the raven . . . .

I miss his aerial patrols over the primitive camping area of Lone Rock, Utah.  I listen for his caws . . . .

Oh well, he must be off on another mission.  Maybe the change in weather has him lying low.

P1140327Remember the vibrant hues of the rocks in the previous post’s photos?

The water so densely blue it looks like paint?  Part of the fun of camping at Lone Rock is watching the changes to rock and water, made by light and shadow.  Today is overcast; the water’s bright blue is replaced with steel grey.  At times light breaks through and adds a sheen to the surface, giving the appearance of ice.

This rock (below) is the same one you saw in the photo at the bottom of the previous post.  The softness is caused by a light mist.

P1140328Several RVs join the Lone Rock community on the beach.

I finally unhitch the Best Little Trailer. After several days hanging around camp, unhitching marks the end of the mourning period over Bridget.

Things need to be done.  Life goes on.

Reggie and I drive to Arizona for groceries.

About ten miles from Lone Rock, Utah, is the Wal-Mart in Page, Arizona.  I choose a few fresh fruits and vegetables, plus some Greek yogurt. In the auto department I pick up a container of pre-mixed Dex-Cool coolant for the Perfect Tow Vehicle.

I browse the small laptops in the computer department.  Taking the advice of a reader, I’m now interested in purchasing a small notebook with hard drive storage, rather than a Chromebook that relies on “the cloud” for storage.   Nothing Wal-Mart has in stock quite fits what I want.

We return to our little home, a welcome, bright spot on a dark day.

Later . . . .

Reggie knows he has another walk coming.  I have my face in the laptop.  Reggie is belly-down on the floor, pleading with a pathetic stare.

“Okay, okay, you’re right  . . . It’s walk time.”

We head up the paved road toward the entrance booth.  As I’ve done several times throughout this day, I scan the sky, hoping for sight of the raven.

“Oh, THERE HE IS!”

P1140334I laugh with delight as the raven commands the entrance booth.

A line of Class Cs comes to a stop.  People get out of the first RV.  Seeing no person in the booth, they walk back to the machine that takes credit card payments.

While they are out of their vehicle, the raven caws, chortles, and cackles, bringing into view a German shepherd behind the windshield.  The dog appears to be standing on the dash in a face-off with the raven.

The dog barks furiously.

The raven holds his position, continuing his tirade directed at the shepherd, until the driver comes between bird and dog.  The raven lifts off his post and circles above the incoming RVs.

Ha-ha . . . He really does own this place . . . .

“Time to go back, Reg.  It’s getting dark.”

More neighbors have moved near us, I see. . . .

Right before we reach our campsite, the raven appears again!

Like a town crier at the end of day, he makes his way right up the main street between the rows of RVs, flying low, cawing, wings drumming.  I smile.

It’s good to have him back.

I turn and . . . wow! a rainbow!

Sunshine inspires me to clean the floor of the BLT, wipe down the fiberglass surfaces, and remove smudges from the cabinet doors.  I start cleaning the bathroom, too, but, before finishing, I succumb to the temptation to relax outside with Reggie.

Aw, what the heck . . . .

“Uh-oh.  I think Chimpy is about to receive a lesson.”

P1140315

“Show him who’s boss, Reg!”

P1140317

“Oh, there he goes!  He’s trying to escape!  Catch him, Reg!”

P1140318

“Crazy Chimpy, thought he could get away . . . . ”

P1140321

“Atta boy!  Chew that silly grin off his face!”

P1140322 “Reggie, you’re nine pounds of vicious dog, you know that?”

P1140319

“But you’re cute, too.”

P1140316

More light transformations . . . .

Cliffs glowing in the distance.

A solitary butte against a gold backdrop.

Reggie and I will probably leave Lone Rock soon.  I paid the fee for our site up until Sunday (tomorrow) at which time I’ll figure out where we go next.
