Horses of Palo Verde

Monday, February 29

Today is a busy day for me.

I’m remodeling and redecorating the Best Little Trailer!

By remodeling I mean that I’m replacing the storage units that run along the wall opposite our bed with a different kind that are much nicer.  They have spacious, smooth-rolling drawers, for one thing.  And they don’t have contact paper on their fronts.

Really.  Contact paper?  That has to go!

By redecorating I mean I bought a new quilt, shams, comforter, a folding table to replace the pedestal table, and a folding chair with cushion.  As I type this the interior of our little home is in total disorder.

You know how it is.

The project grows as you go.  All the stuff that’s in the old storage drawers has to be sorted and then organized in the new drawers. I’m nowhere near done with this project.  My goal is to have everything in place by nightfall in order to avoid waking up to Camp Chaos tomorrow.

I’ll probably do a post with photos when this project is complete, right down to the color-coordinated chair cushion!

The horse photos in this post were taken this morning.

P1090715-001The crew and I ride out of Buckeye Hills Recreation Area early.

We have no set destination.  I drive Route 85 north and turn onto Old Route 80 which takes us around freshly-mowed fields of alfalfa and past farm houses.

Near the village of Palo Verde, we come upon a few horses.  Of course I zip the PTV onto the shoulder and park.

I love taking photos of horses!

P1090722Reggie gives the horses a piece of his mind. As you can see, they aren’t impressed.

Later in the day, trouble visits Bridget!

She’s on the bed, waking up from a nap.  She stands up and immediately yelps in pain as her back leg gives way.

Remember that old chipmunk injury?  The one that two vets told me had to be repaired surgically because it would never heal by itself?

That was a couple of years ago when we were in Oregon.

As those of you who have read the old posts know, I opted to skip the surgery.  Not because of the cost which would have been hefty.  It didn’t seem right to put Bridget through all that trauma without giving the leg some time to heal on its own.

Miraculously it did heal without intervention and she’s been using it ever since without any problem.

Up until now.

I really expected that leg to be an issue, on and off, ever since the injury.

Anyway . . .

P1090717-001Poor Bridge is in awful pain.

I grab the crew’s medical kit and find a vial of Tramadol pills.  Quickly I cut a pill in half as instructed on the label, hide it in a piece of chicken, and feed it to my girl.  Down it goes.  (“Yes, Reggie. You get a bite, too!”)

About 20 minutes later, Bridget stops whimpering.

Since she’s unable to put weight on the leg, I carry her outside so she can do her business before bed and during the night.

Around 10 p.m. she’s crying again.

I give her the other half of the Tramadol.  The label says “Give 1/2 tablet twice a day.”

Well, the first tablet was at 4 p.m. and now it’s 10 p.m.  Kind of close . . . .

I give her another piece of chicken that hides a half-pill.

It takes her a while to get comfortable and fall asleep.  I’m thankful when she does fall into a deep sleep, and also when she sleeps until 6 this morning.  (I’m typing this around 3 p.m.  She’s had one more half-pill.)

The good news is she’s putting weight on that leg again!

A little bit. Gingerly. I’m lifting her up and down from the bed and in and out of the door to give that leg time to heal.  She’s resting comfortably.

I forgot to tell you we moved to a new campsite at Buckeye Hills.

Yep.  We snagged that primo campsite with the super view of the surrounding countryside!

P1090699That’s it for now.  I need to get back to work on this mess of a house!
