Canine Corner: “The End of Another Day of Fun” by Bridget and Reggie
“Reggie. Stop chewing the face off that poor armadillo and pay attention. We have to talk.”
“Sure, Bridgie-baby. What’s up?”
“You. You’re what’s up. Too many times in the night. RVSue and I need to rest. Play in the daytime, sleep at night. Got it?”
“Oh. Sorry. (Pause.) All right. I’m just so happy, Bridge!”
“Another thing. You do not call me Bridge or Bridgie-baby. I’m old enough to be your mother and you should respect your elders. Call me Miss Bridget or ma’am. Do you think you can do that, Reggie?”
“Yes, ma’am. I can do that.”
“Oops. Yes, ma’am. I can do that. (Giggles.) I forgot!”
“Very good, Reggie. It’s getting late. Time for us to turn in for the night. RVSue looks like the walking dead. More than usual.”
“Now? But I was having FUN! I’m not done killing the armadillo!”
“Finish him off in the morning. It’s time for bed.”
“Okay, Miss Bridget. Tell me a story first . . . . please? I love your bedtime stories. Please, please, please, ma’am, ma’am, ma’am . . . . ” (Rolls over and acts silly.)
“First get under the covers with me, Reggie. Comfy? Good. . . . (Pause.) Once upon a time–”
“Ooh! Tell me about Spike! Tell me the one about when Spike barked at a hundred cows and they were all standing around the camp looking at him real mean and he was surrounded and– ”
“Reggie, calm down. Let me tell the story. (Pause.) Once upon a time there was a dog named Spike. He was the greatest boondocker that ever–”
“What’s a boondocker, Miss B?”
“Never mind that now, Reggie. You’ll learn soon enough. Stop interrupting and let me tell the story . . . . ”
“Oh! Oh! Don’t forget the part about how he rescued his beef bone! I love that part!”
(Sigh.)
