Once upon a time when I worked in a small insurance adjustment office, the adjuster in the next cubicle remarked, “Should I send my mother flowers for Mother’s Day?” He wasn’t really asking me. It wasn’t uncommon for either of us to think out loud. Even though I knew he didn’t expect me to answer, I said,
“There is one statement that is never thought or spoken.”
“What’s that?” he asked over the partition.
“I wish I hadn’t been so nice to my mother.”
