Skeeter’s story

I ask Del how he got Skeeter.

Desert scene from our camp, northwest of Blythe, California

Here’s the story . . .

Del goes to a local cafe almost every morning for coffee and sometimes a bite to eat, too. One day he pulls into the cafe parking lot and sees a little white dog tied up out front.

“I liked the looks of that dog right away.”

He goes inside and asks . . .

“Whose dog is that outside?”

The woman who runs the place knows Del.  She’s known him for years, the way people in small towns do.

“Hi, Del.”

She shrugs. “I guess he’s mine now.”

She tells Del a trucker left the dog at the cafe.

He didn’t want to part with it but he found out the dog wasn’t suited for long hauls in the cab of the truck.

Being cooped up like that drove the dog crazy and the noise of the engine made him nervous, too.

“Well, I take him home,” Del continues, “and by the end of the day I’ve bonded with him and he’s bonded with me.”

While Del is telling me this, Skeeter, Roger, and Reggie play nearby.

Sensing that he’s being discussed, Skeeter jumps into Del’s lap. He stands face-to-face, front paws on Del’s chest.  Del reacts, clutching Skeeter’s shoulders and laughing, then returns to the story.

“I had to have this dog!”

The woman at the cafe doesn’t hesitate to turn the dog over to Del. She knows he loves animals and that he’ll give him a good home.

Over time, about every two or three weeks, the trucker comes through town.

He stops at the cafe to check on the dog that once was his.  Sometimes he catches Del there with Skeeter.

“He’s a real nice guy,” Del says.

I’m sure he’s happy the way things turned out for the little white dog!

Tomorrow is the day!

Reading online tracking, my packages will arrive in Blythe by 8 p.m. today.  Tomorrow the crew and I will head into town.

First I’ll go to the grocery store and buy a box of turkey burgers and some vegetables for my new, propane griddle.  Then I’ll pick up my packages at the storage place.

Merry Christmas to me!

Among those packages is something for Reggie and Roger, too!

Loved the story of Skeeter. He sure is a happy dog, now. His story sort of runs along the line of how you came to have Roger, too. Del does seem like a really nice guy.

Hope everything shows up. I know this doesn’t apply to you, but we have had several stolen package in our community this year. Really surprising since everyone here watches for each other and there seems to always be someone out walking, running or doing pet duties.

  22. Linda Rose, Muffin, Molly & Midgy in Carmichael, CA says:

Lucky little Skeeter and lucky little Roger and Reggie. Muffin is still hanging in there but she’s giving me a hard time about taking all her meds. Little stinker. Enjoy your new purchases. Merry Christmas to you and the crew.

  23. A happy ending for everyone involved. Sweet that the trucker gets to check in on his former little dog.

How fun to be expecting Santa’s sleigh to come :-))))

  24. That’s a very sweet story about Del and Skeeter. It’s really amazing when two paths cross in such a way. And it’s nice the trucker was able to know Skeeter was taken into such a loving family.

I see my Shop Vac order is in the list. I ordered the last few items I needed on Thursday so I would receive before I head out next week.
    Merry Christmas all!

  25. Cynthia from San Clemente says:

I love the Skeeter story. What a wonderful man Del is to take that pup – Skeeter must have had a guardian dog watching over him!! The three of those boyz playing together is just too cute!! I’m so glad you’re settled in somewhere nice for Christmas and have your new grill. Next thing we know you’ll go all “Miss BBQ” on us!!! That last photo of R&R cuddled up in bed is precious – I just want to scoop them up and give them big kisses!!

  26. Joe in TN says:

What a great story Missy. All good participants, the trucker who wanted the best for Skeeter, Del who is just naturally a great guy, and Skeeter, Roger and Reggie all wonderful little dogs who had the good fortune to be loved by wonderful humans. You and Del are both all stars in my book! Cold here for this old man 36 this morning. I’ve lived where it got down to 30 below but that was when I was younger. Another year almost gone Missy…

Merry Christmas to everyone – we are having a quiet time here, enjoying reading about what you are all doing. Sue, I hope all your parcels have arrived safely and that you are having a very happy day! I ordered gifts for my mother-in-law who is in the UK – I went to Amazon through one of your links but then had to go to the UK Amazon site so I don’t know if that works for you. If you see chocolate bars and smoked salmon, that was me! – about a week ago.
Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

  38. weather says:

How and why Skeeter came to live in his forever home is a wonderful story. It’s nice that you gave Del to the chance to tell it, I imagine he was glad you asked him to. Anyone that loves an animal, human friend or spouse enjoys sharing their memories of when they met, of becoming a precious part of each other’s life.

Considering how close to Christmas it was when you placed your orders with Amazon, it’s impressive your purchased items arrived as quickly as they did. Just picturing the fun you’ll have opening the packages makes me happy 🙂

  39. Merry Christmas Sue and boys! That’s a sweet story about Skeeter. I’m glad he’s in a good safe home. The trucker did the right thing though I’m sure it was hard. I think about Anita too…hoping she is happy and still at peace with her decision for Roger.

  40. Nancy from South Georgia says:

Merry Christmas Sue! You’re living the life and so are those lucky pups.

Thank you for Skeeter’s Story. Love hearing when human and animal meet in a positive way and share their lives.

  41. Merle from Washington says:

Merry Christmas, to Sue and Crew! A special shout out to Rattlesnake Joe and wife Kate……hot to be forgotten All the bogorians!!!!!

  42. Don in Alaska says:

This is the time of year where everything outside is frozen – even more so this year owing to warm rains in early Dec.

So, when I tire of the dead landscape, I know I can swing by here and ‘visit’ the site. I can always count on wonderful photos and a bit of ‘conversation’ – such that it lifts the spirits a bit. Knowing that not everywhere is iced over helps.

So – Merry Christmas to you, Sue (and to the pups as well) and a large thank you for the time and effort you put into your little piece of the ‘Net. It makes a nice rest stop in the day.

    • Barb in Florida says:

I like that, Don in Alaska. Just sat down with a cup of coffee, turned on the Sue channel and stopped in for a “rest stop” in my day.

Thanks from me too, Sue for giving me something on-line I enjoy!

  43. AZ Jim says:

I was looking at the pic of the boys lying down and have decided that’d not nap time…they are charging their little batteries…

I hope that you and the pups have a wonderful Christmas and a big fat turkey burger off of that new grill. I have a feeling one will get cooked for them too. I have visions of pancakes, sandwiches and scrumptious veggies coming off of the grill. I also see Roger and Reggie watching in anticipation..Is it done yet Mom? Enjoy your grill and griddle and I do expect a pic of the perfectly grilled turkey burger.
Have a wonderful holiday and I wish you the best health and happiness for you and your boys.
