The adoption of Reggie and his first full day as a member of our family

Saturday, March 7

This morning Bridget and I leave Las Vegas Bay Campground located on what was once the shoreline of Lake Mead and head into the city.  I am determined to arrive at PetSmart early in order to be first in line for adopting a rescue pup.

The past few days I frequently checked the website of Adopt a Rescue Pet .

The organization has a large selection of adoptable dogs which can be seen today at three PetSmart locations in Las Vegas.  I choose to go to the store in North Las Vegas as it’s the easiest drive from the campground.  We hit the road very early to allow time for getting lost or stuck in traffic.

As it turns out, driving in Las Vegas on a Saturday morning is easy.

We arrive at PetSmart at 8:15 a.m. and the adoption event doesn’t begin until 10 o’clock!

1-P1030110I walk Bridget around the shopping center.  Volunteers begin preparations for the event.  Mostly women, they haul out heavy, metal crates and set them up.  A man sprays the crates with a bleach solution.

Bridget and I stay nearby but out of the way.

I want our presence felt.  During a pause in the set-up work, a volunteer starts a conversation with me.  I take the opportunity to explain that I’ve been looking to adopt for months, traveling across Arizona, southern California, and now Nevada, and so far I’ve missed out because someone else scoops up the dog before I can get there.

“Not today!” I add.  “I drove here from Lake Havasu City yesterday to adopt a dog at this event.”

My dramatic story gains the sympathy of the volunteers.

The story reaches the woman who is in charge.  She (I think her name is Naomi, but I’m not sure) comes out of the store and asks if I’m interested in a puppy and do I want male or female.

“I’m interested in everything,” I respond.

“Well, in that case, what’s your name?  I’ll put you at the top of the puppy list.  We have to make a list because the demand for puppies is high.”  I give her my name and thank her.

She reassures me, “We aren’t going to let you go home without a dog today!”

Bridget and I wander around the store waiting for the dogs to arrive.

1-P1030115“Look at all those toys, Bridge.  I could get you something.  Do you see a toy you like?”

Bridget gives the aisle a quick glance.  Her body language answers my question, “meh.”

I buy a bag of five-star rated Blue Wilderness dry dog food.

Let’s pause here . . . .

My focus this morning is on adopting a dog.  I need my hands free, and when the action starts, I lock the camera in the PTV.   Therefore, I don’t have many photos from the adoption day. I know you’ve already scrolled down to see Reggie, haven’t you!  (I took those the next day.)

To continue with a long story made shorter . . .

The puppies are border collie/blue heeler mixes.  Beautiful pups, wrong breed.  I look at a wire-haired terrier named Sammie.  Nice dog, slightly bigger than I hoped for, alert, intelligent, wiry, tan fur.   Oh, I don’t know.  I’m not connecting with him.

I consider Stormy who rates high on the crazy appearance meter.

He’s a gray mix of poodle and terrier and who-knows-what-all which accounts for his fur sticking out in all directions, including from his face, giving him a look of insanity . . .  well  . . . . taking a big chance with that one  . . . .  (Later I see a boy about 8 years old happily leading Stormy away.)

“Have you seen Reggie?” one of the workers asks.  “He would be perfect for you.”

Reggie is outside in the parking lot being walked by his foster father, Joe.

This photo was shown in the last post.  Hey, he’s cute enough to look at it again!

1-P1030118I admit that, at first, Reggie seems too small.

I had been shown a photo of another dog about Bridget’s size with a white body and black head, possibly a rat terrier.  I decide to wait until that dog arrives before making a decision.  There was a mix-up on his age and I learn he’s six.  His age doesn’t matter because I know right away that he’s not the right one for us.

I choose Reggie.

I’ll tell you more in a future post.

For now I’ll summarize . . . .

Reggie is estimated to be three years old.  He was a stray coming from Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Reggie has been living with four other dogs in Joe’s home since December.  He’s up-to-date on his shots, and he’s neutered and microchipped.

Bridget is a bit stressed from all the barking dogs and strange surroundings.  Even so, she’s well-behaved (which I’m sure impresses the volunteers) and she’s polite to Reggie.

I know they will be fine together.

I sign several forms, one promising that I will return Reggie to the Adopt a Rescue Pet organization if he doesn’t work out, even if it’s ten years or more from now.  (Fat chance).

The forms are reviewed and I’m questioned about my lifestyle.  Will I stay in the area during a trial period?  I explain how I live and that I can easily return to Las Vegas, should that be necessary.

One of the forms specifies the adoption fee be paid in cash.

What?  Oh no!  Do I have $200 dollars with me?  I check my wallet.  $100.  Bridget and I trot out to the PTV to check my cash stash.  Whew!  Another $100 dollars.

Incredibly I have the exact amount of cash, not a dollar more, not a dollar less.

Reggie is ours!

I’m given a packet of coupons from PetSmart and local veterinarians.  As required, I have an identification tag made for Reggie.  I also purchase a red lead and collar for Reggie and a red lead for Bridget.

More about this day in a future post . . .

I do want to tell you about bedtime . . . .

Reggie gives me approximately 850 kisses before bed (I lost count).  Bridget wiggles into her usual position between me and the wall.  Reggie chooses the same position only up near my neck.  He falls asleep with his chin resting on my throat.

Sometime during the night I awake to find Reggie’s soft face lying on my face.  We’re cheek-to-cheek.  I don’t move.  He’s so light I barely feel him there and soon I fall back to sleep.

Around 4:30 a.m. I need to use the bathroom.  This wakes up Reggie so I take him outside on-leash.  He relieves himself.  We go back to bed.  He falls asleep.  Gee, this guy is all right!

Sunday, March 8

Here are photos of what the crew looks like upon waking.

1-P1030137In Bridget’s defense, she isn’t quite awake when I take these photos.

1-P1030131 Reggie is always curious!

1-P1030136We have a good, first full day together as a family.

Walking the campground is one of Reggie’s favorite things to do.

1-P1030145No shortage of doggie messages to read along the way.

1-P1030149The crew meets a fellow camper named Curly.

1-P1030140Later the crew has time in The Pen to allow RVSue a chance to respond to all the congratulations from readers.

1-P1030157I supervise through the BLT’s window.  Reggie briefly lolls in the sunshine.

1-P1030159Before long, the newness wears off and the two inmates want out!

1-P1030161 Later, inside the BLT, Reggie wants to play.

I roll him around in the unmade bed (who has time for housework!), scratching his chest and talking nonsense.

1-P1030152“You’re a star, Reggie.  Did you know that?  You’re a celebrity dog, just like the Bridge!”

  13. DesertGinger says:

What is Reggie, around 15 pounds? I’m not sure he is big enough to be safe from flying predators. But he sure is cute. Maybe he will ‘liven up’ the Bridge. Im surprised at how mellow she seems to be. Yesterday someone said she probably feels safer because he’s smaller…I bet that’s true. $200 seems like a good deal too. Glad you had the cash. I can’t stop looking at the pics…he’s just so adorable!

  14. Ida says:

  42. Val R. Lakefield On. says:

  47. Calvin R (in Ohio) says:

    Wonderful stray
    All the way
    From Santa Fe

I’m not really a poet but I could not resist. It’s been a long journey for all of you, but it looks like you both found a great match. I got to know my ex’s new Chihuahua pup today. I also see Chihuahua in Reggie’s face.

  48. Bravo! Bravo! What a wonderful story. Reading this brought a huge smile to my face that just won’t go away. Thank you for sharing your new family’s first day together with us. Reggie is indeed a cutie!

  49. Rita from Phoenix says:

I couldn’t wait to hear more about Reggie! Sleeping under your chin is exactly what Ralphie did as a little pup and he would make those cute noises like a baby. Ralphie was about 17 lbs during his last check up and shots. He thinks he’s a big dog and very protective…have to be careful with him he doesn’t meet the wrong dog who will attack him. Ralphie is very obedient and obeys commands…very sociable too. All our dogs are small with two terrier mix, one mini pin, and one dachshund. They get along very well. My son installed a doggie door to my back yard…so the dogs come and go outside without me having to take them out…really helps at night when I’m sleeping. They come back to bed…but they like their crate also and sleep in them. I don’t lock them into the crates…they can use it when they want i.e. naps or to chew on their bone. So happy you rescued Reggie. I don’t like to see all those dogs in cages waiting to be adopted.

  50. Jan in Montana says:

So happy for you three. Reggie seems almost to be smiling up at you. I can read the smile on your face, too.

  51. Taranis17 says:

Congrats, Ms. Sue! He’s a cutie, very photogenic! Spoil him rotten!

  52. Jan Johnson says:

I’m always amazed at how quickly you can bond and be one with a dog, fully comfortable with each other. My kids were adopted at 11 months and one was almost 7. It took years to bond properly as she was so resentful of me taking her from her home, an orphanage that would have sent her out on her own at 16 but to her the home where her friends were that she thought was permanent. Dogs are so unconditionally loving and accepting that in an instant they are your best pal, your child, your family. It tightened my throat to think of little Reggie lying his head across your neck in complete trust and love on his very first night with you. Such an adorable little guy! I am so happy for you and Bridget and really amazed at how quickly she has accepted him. And you had just enough money for him – it was surely meant to be!

  53. GB in nor cal says:

Looks like Lady Luck shone your way today. It pays to be an early bird. He’s adorable & glad that you were able to connect with him & add him to your family!

    Happy Trails!

  55. Dave Reed says:

That’s one lucky dog….he’s got a great owner.

  56. Jo says:

Reggie sounds like the perfect dog for you, and you are the perfect person for him. I was so touched about how he slept with his face on yours. Sweet. Bridge is such a good girl to welcome him too. Enjoy your new little team member.

  65. Elizabeth in WA says:

Awwww, so cute and kissy and little…it probably is a good thing you arrived early and got to talk to the ladies there!! And with soft fur too…wow, what a nice package he is!! Bridget is hilarious as usual too….she has lots of emotions on her face, huh? That is one reason I prefer dogs with markings on their faces…so much more expressions!!

  66. Debra in Tn says:

You were sure lucky in Vegas. Reggie is so cute, pictures of him and Bridget are adorable. Will look forward to canine corner.

  67. AZ Jim says:

Missy, just like with “Bridge”, I see an occasional “come on Reg” in the future. I don’t know why we do it, but do it we do. What a great pick he was.

  68. Kent W says:

Yup A real cutie and keeper. will be fun.

  69. Fl Cat lady says:

He is so perfect!!!! Not only his adorable looks but his size. He will fill out I can tell. He is young yet. He is too big for anything in the sky to snatch him. I, like everyone else is just thrilled for you. A perfect choice. Finally really a *crew* again. 🙂

  70. Mert in ky says:

Oh sue, I just read the wonderful news. I am so happy for you and Bridge!
And Reggie is adorable!! Love the pic with his nose up to the camera lol toooo cute!! You know, u can always give Reggie a middle name and call him by both until you can just call middle. Asia’s middle name is Mae. And 90% of the time I call her Mae.. Or mostly Mae Mae. ( and pretty girl, baby girl, girly girl. Mommas baby, big red, big butt, etc etc.) lol.
I can’t wait to see and hear more. So happy bridge has accepted. I would love a pup. But I don’t think Mae would be so welcoming. She says she is a only child. ( she doesn’t share well- only with the birds outside) 😉
    Congrats. I’ll be back 🙂
    Mert and Asia Mae

  71. Becki says:

Hey Sue & sweet Bridget. . . looks like you’ve found a ”KEEPER”. So happy for you. Becki

  72. Ilse says:

I am soooo happy for the three of you. My only question: how long before there will be a Reggie’s corner where he makes fun of ol’ Bridge’s butt?
    Cheers,
    Ilse

  73. Libby Nester says:

Excellent choice. I think he will be the perfect crew member. I know Bridget will love being his big sister. He’s so cute! Congratulations!

  74. A gal in Maple Valley, WA says:

Hey Sue….. looks like he even sits like Bridget! (3rd shot from bottom) I vote for that close-up as your new header. 😉

  75. UPCDebra says:

Such a cute little snuggly fella! Did I miss how much Reggie wieighs? Whatever, he looks like a perfect fit for The Crew. May you have many kissy years together with Sir Reg and Miss Bridgette.

  76. Monica- CA says:

He’s so cute! Ms. Bridget looks happy to have a brother. The photo of the two of them together in the pen waiting for you is precious.

  77. Oh my gosh! What a cutie! I’m so happy for you and your family Sue!

It’s been a little while since I checked in (up to my eyeballs in code). Before I shut the computer down I thought “wonder if rvsue has found her new crew member yet”.

Hip, hip, hooray! The two look comfortable together too, of course. “You got the right one Baby”! Whoot! 🙂

  78. Velda in Roseville Ca says:

I know nothing about these small breed dogs. People keep saying Reggie may get bigger. Sue, you said he is about 3 years old? Are these smaller dogs expected to still get larger past age 3? He is so cute. And boy does he have adventures ahead that he could not even imagine. I bet his foster Dad whispered in Reggie’s ear, before handing him over, Reggie you have found your Mom!

    • Cinandjules (NY) says:

Most dogs get to their max growth size at a year! Height wise…then they start to fill out…girth wise.

It’s probably safe to say Reggie is at his max growth stage!

  79. Robert says:

Congrats on the new addition. He has mischief in his eyes and Bridget has worry in hers……….beware! Lock up your camera or anything else you value made of plastic. lmao.

Bridget is gonna say “I didn’t do it” and you will have to trust her, cause they are both gonna be pointing paws at one another.

You might, because you travel so much want to consider getting him (micro chipped) so if he did get lost he could be identified and possibly returned even with no tags, It’s not very expensive.

I had my Mini Aussie done and I think it was about 85 bucks, I as a trucker travel the lower 48 and am always on the move.

Most vets and shelters have a scanner and it would at least give a contact number to let you know where he decided to bail out for “Spring break” and how much his bail is!

Any way he looks like a fine choice for both you and Bridget and will give you years of (travel entertainment) as it will me reading about it……….hehehehe

Keep up the blog, I love reading it.

  80. Barbara in Scottsdale says:

Congrats Sue on the adoption of your new little boy! He is so photogenic with just very expressive eyes. I just love love love his name. Reggie has an impish quality to the name, and as he ages, Sir Reginald denotes a wise caring well traveled man about town. So happy for you and your completed crew! I love your blog and am looking forward to the canine corner.

  81. PookieBoy in houston says:

you done good, Sue….so happy for ya! That Reggie is a cutie….
Im surprised you didnt get a senior citizens discount. When I got LuLu from
the pound in Conroe, Tx I got a 50% senior discount…….lots of older folks dont have
$200 to spend on a dog especially one thats in a pound…..but Im glad you did!!
Im sure as time goes on Reggie will watch over Bridget in her older years and
    protect her from danger.
are you still camping in las vegas?
    chuck

  82. David in Boston says:

    Sue and Bridget,

We’re so pleased that the search is over, Sue, and you’ve found a new family member. Hudson is our second Brittany rescue, and my partner and I feel those rescue guys and gals are the some of the most loving four-legged family members, and they somehow recognize their luck in their new life. Wishing the three of you all the best.

    Happy travels!
    David

  83. Dancer says:

    morning Sue and Crew,
what wonderful pictures, waking up to a new day.. they are precious, its so wonderful that it seems to be flowing without issue, which means it was meant to be. Now that we see a good picture of them standing together, he’s smaller but not that small, which is good for Bridget because seems these big dogs did not fit her fancy. 🙂 I can’t wait to see more pics of your travels with the new crew and hear of the new adventures with the new crew.. its going to be a good ride. 🙂

  84. Heda says:

    He sounds like a keeper.

  85. Donna P says:

I’m still not sure how you do it. I’ve never met you, I’m sure I never will meet you, but you have me reading your emails first—eager to find out how your first day went with Reggie. He won me over with the kisses!! Congratulations for finding your new little guy. I can’t wait to see what new adventures are in store for you and the crew. I’m happy for you, RV Sue!

  86. Tina says:

Ok, tears in my eyes over Reggie at bedtime. You were meant for each other! Just for the record, I think his name suits him. Here’s to many happy times and memories together as a family of three again.

  87. Jodee Gravel says:

Yep, he’s got the right stuff. Bridget clearly knows he’s part of the family already. They are going to have a great time reading all the terrain together, and she will teach him about finding the way back to the BLT from hikes in the wild. I’m sure they’ll let you come along 🙂

  88. Cheryl says:

Welcome home Reggie! Momma Sue looked long and hard for you and will take good care of you. And Bridget will show you all the secrets to living on the road.

  89. Krystina at Wellton, AZ says:

Oh RVSue….Reggie is “Over the Moon Cute”!! I am so happy you found your new family member. His pics are adorable and he just fit right in. Happy that Bridget is not put out with him and they were friends at first sight. It looks like Reggie knows he has found his family. Can’t wait to see his little personality develop and to read about the antics between him and HRH….should make lots of super stories. My face is still smiling. xxoo

    • Krystina at Wellton, AZ says:

Jeeze with all this excitement I forgot to tell you that Micky (Wandering Spirit from this blog) came to see me on Friday! We had a great time catching up. She, Shiloh and Joy are doing very well. Happy to see them again 🙂

      • DesertGinger says:

Hey Krystina…did you see my earlier post? I drove thou Wellton on Hwy 8 and was wondering if your park is the one right on the south side of the highway?

        • Krystina at Wellton, AZ says:

Hi DesertGinger…lets see, if you are driving East on 8 it is across the highway on your left hand side. As I don’t have a car (ugh) I cannot tell you the exit # or anything else. When someone else is driving we might as well be in Alaska. I would have loved to meet you…maybe next time 🙂

          • DesertGinger says:

Ok…I was driving west and it was on my right hand side, just north of the highway…don’t know why I said south before! Looked like a big park but totally bare of trees! But in the winter that’s okay. You are probably leaving soon. I was on my way to Algodones. Maybe we can plan to meet up next year.

  90. Pam says:

Congratulations Sue and Bridget…..he is so stinking cute! I’ll bet Bridge is so happy that you have someone else to take photos of instead of her…..every time I see her in photos, it looks like she is giving you “the stink eye”. Again, congrats.

  91. Bob Martel says:

    Sue,
I’m so happy for all three of you!

  92. wildflower in prescott says:

  96. Barbara says:

He is adorable! I am so glad you finally got him.

  97. weather says:

My favorite part – you able to just enjoy a normal day again…- hard season of questions and frustration over…-“This is why,and o-oh yeah, was it ever worth it!”
Love the picture of them waking up together with their color resemblances so like a family’s.Amazing how much there is that makes the three of you a natural fit.

How gratifying successfully helping you must have been for the rescue folks .While strolling the toy aisle you say to Bridget “I could get you one.” The endearing childlike way you express yourself at times, your gratitude for finally being able to afford the smallest pleasures is so touching…

  98. Reggie, You don’t know just how lucky you are. Enjoy him Sue!
    Juley

  99. Pat in Rochester says:

I’m so happy for you and Bridget. And for Reggie, too. Boy what a life he has for himself now.

We adopted a puppy last month and I’ve been thinking about you a lot because of it. Charlie is guessed to be a German shepherd / border collie mix, but who knows? He came on a transport from Bowling Green, KY and we met the volunteer in Binghamton. He was just 8 weeks when we got him, and he’s growing like a weed.

Anyway, the volunteer had a bunch of dogs in her SUV, including two who looked just like Bridget, which is partly why I’ve been thinking of you so much. I’d wanted to scoop them up and head west! lol!

Well, also been thinking about you because I’ve been craving warm weather. We’ve made records here in Rochester because of the cold. Warming up a bit now, thank heavens. Been nice reading your blog and taking in your photos, helps me through this winter.

Oh, I’m so happy for you!

  100. Sandy says:

Such a sweet story and a very lucky dog.

  101. Nicole says:

Congrats on the new family member! What an adorable face!

  104. R. in Anza Borrego Desert says:

So happy for you, Bridget and Reggie.

  105. Terri From Texas says:

    Hi Sue,
Very wonderful pics of Bridget and Reggie. (Love his name!) I was wondering if you told Joe about your blog so he could keep up with Reggie if he wanted to?
We are finally having a rain event here in Tx. that has lasted 2 days straight! That has been rare the last few years so we are loving it! Hope the weather is good where you are-can’t wait to read about your summer travels. We are probably going to be traveling to the Chinle area in early Sept. to visit my sister and brother-in-law who are working on the Navajo Reservation in the hospital. Have you ever been to the Canyon de Chelly monument? We are hoping to stay in the campground there.
    Be cool!

  106. Susan in Dallas says:

Reggie just fit right in! Finding him and how well he gets along with Bridget and having exactly the correct amount of money just adds more to the “it was meant to be” idea. Can’t wait for Canine Corner to come back!

  107. AZ Jim says:

We all know what is happening today. Our Sue and her two crew members are having a whole new view of the world. Reggie has much to learn and he is headed for a life that he couldn’t have even dreamed of in one of those little doggie dreams. I hope they take a long enough break that they rest and come back down to earth. They all have adjustments to make. It will be fun for them…….oh yeah….for us too!!

  108. Congratulations, Sue! He’s adorable and just right. I have to give you kudos for holding out for just the right one. May the three of you have many happy travels together. Grace

  109. Barrie says:

    Hi Sue,
Congratulations!!! I am so happy for you. What a doll Reggie is and Bridget seems to be happy too. Reggie is a very lucky companion.
    Cheers,
    Barrie

  110. Leilani says:

Precious. Maybe it’s better that he’s smaller than Bridget because: 1) he’s probably less intimidating to her and 2) they look like they could be Mom and son!

[ I predict you get asked if he’s her pup a lot in the future.]

  111. Julie B says:

Oh I have tears in my eyes as I read this especially the part where you wake up and he is cheek to cheek with you. So perfect. Just so perfect. He is adorable.

  112. Ron Sears says:

He’s a keeper Sue, that’s for sure..I am getting closer myself, just haven’t made the connection yet like you and Reggie…gotta love it…be safe..

  113. rvsueandcrew says:

You know what I think? I think y’all like Reggie! 🙂

I’m taking a break from replying individually to comments in order to spend time with the crew. I’ve read each and every message more than once; you are such a delight. Thank you for being part of our happiness.

I hope to post again this evening. See ya’ later!

    Sue

  114. Cari in North Texas says:

So happy for you and your new family member. It does sound as though he was meant to you to find him – being at the site early and talking with the volunteers, having the exact cash. He is so cute!

Welcome to your new home, Reggie, and your new family. You are already famous!

  115. wildflower in prescott says:

Sue, maybe you will answer this in a future post, but I was wondering how a stray dog in Santa Fe ends up being fostered in Las Vegas? Maybe another Blogorinos will know.

I am so happy for the three of you!!

  116. Ray says:

OMG! The new pup is adorable. Congratulations on the addition to the crew.

  117. Linda says:

Oh my gosh. Cuteness overload! Again, a real crew. : )

    Sue, Bridget and Reggie Boy…
Happy Dance Balloons and Candy Lollipops are in the order of the day!!! So HAPPY for you and the CREW! Imagine my surprise when I turned in today, Monday, and saw your latest news! Sat and Sun were travel days for me. Got settled in around 3:00 AM on Sunday night after a long round-trip to Warner Robbins and back. Today I was really tired and your wonderful new news was the highlight of my day, so happy for you Sue!
PERFECT just feels SO RIGHT doesn’t it? That Reggie sure is a looker and he looks like he could be a real scamper in the making too! Luv those spots and those turned down ears. And those big, round, bright eyes…surely he will be the latest Babe-Magnate on the go 😉 Spikie would approve him in a micro-heartbeat!!! It will be fun to follow his crew-adventures and see his personality bloom.
Hugs and More Hugs all around 🙂
