Cathedral Gorge! Part 2

Reggie does Cathedral Gorge, Nevada! — May 2017

~ ~ ~

Taking up from where we left off in the previous post . . .

“Good thing you didn’t come with me into the cave, Reg.  I would’ve tripped over you in the dark, small spaces.”

I start up the Perfect Tow Vehicle and move us further along the rocks of Cathedral Gorge State Park.  The next caves — Cathedral Caves — have attracted a few cars and people.

We don’t stop.

I don’t want the experience ruined by other people. If we come to this part of Nevada again, that will be something new for me . . . . Something for which to return.

The next stop is Canyon Caves.

“Be a good boy, Reg, while I check this out.  I won’t be long.  Promise.”  I squeeze his face and leave a kiss on his cheek.

Inside the caves I take loads of photos.

Too many to post here!

I like the part when one steps out of the caves into the light.  It’s like leaving church after a wonderful worship service.

Next I park the PTV at a picnic/BBQ area and let Reggie out on his tether.

Immediately he takes off!

“What’s that over there, Reg?”

Closer inspection reveals the stone building is a restroom.  Well, an outhouse, actually.

“The original picnic facilities built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s are still in use today. The stone water tower and the stone rest room facility . . . , also constructed by the CCC, are no longer in use.” –parks.nv.gov

I also read at the website that the 2,000 acres of the state park were once home to the Fremont, Anasazi, and Southern Piutes.

To read about “the geologic processes occurring over tens of millions of years,” follow this link to the government website page “Natural Resources and Climate of Cathedral Gorge State Park.”

“See the PTV waiting for us?  Let’s take a drive over to the campground.”

On the way I stop for this photo, hurrying with my camera to catch the people going into the caves.

An imaginative friend of mine has a name for these rock formations (next photo), also seen in Utah . . .

“Petticoats”

Reggie and I ride through the campground.

Less than half the sites are occupied.  This being a Sunday afternoon, it’s most likely that some campers pulled out this morning.  As you can see from the photos, the sites are well maintained.  The rocks and caves are close enough to be accessed by following a path from the campground.

That would make a lovely walk at sunset.

Here are details on the campground:

The campground has 22 sites, each with a table, grill and shade ramada. Electric hookups are also available. Sites cannot be reserved. Water and flush restrooms with showers are open year-around. Facilities adjacent to the campground offer large shade ramadas, grills, picnic tables and water. . . . Camping is limited to 14 days in a 30-day period. . . . Camping: $17 per night + $10 per night for utility hookups.” – http://parks.nv.gov/parks/cathedral-gorge

Reggie and I walk in the shade in the group camping area.

This gives my little dynamo a chance to run around in the thick grass before we board the PTV again and return to Caliente.

Next post — a new camp!

NOTE:  Another feature of Cathedral Gorge State Park is the Miller Overlook.  One can hike the four miles through the canyon or drive to the overlook directly from Route 93. That would’ve been too much for this visit (sensory overload!).  I’d rather do that part of the park another time.  — Sue

Stunning rock formations! I know what you mean by “sensory overload”. I couldn’t speak when I first viewed the Grand Canyon. Glad Reggie didn’t disappear in the light colored landscapes.

  7. Rachel says:

    Hey there Sue!

It never ceases to amaze me, how our lives change! You are on the road now for several years, and loving it, I have been on move most of my life, and on the road, like you, for four years, and that’s how we met. Now I may have found a place to call home. I found a piece of dirt in Kentucky, Sue! I am excited about the possibilities! If you have a little time, I wrote about it. There are pictures, not as good as yours, but it is beautiful here. 🙂

  8. Archae says:

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers out there!

  9. Elizabeth in WA says:

Amazing photos Sue…but how do you think the Indians could possibly have the food and water they needed?? Looks so barren… (I am reading more about Cherokees of late…my youngest got me kind of re-interested in our bit of bloodline there)…

  10. Cat Lady in Central City, La. says:

Well, Sue, the latest thing that went on the flitz is the front roof a/c. Tuff cookies. God willing, I’m heading out Monday a.m. for the SKPs CG in Summerdale, AL. I called them a couple of days ago and the lady said they had an RV tech that could add Freon/repair the a/c. I sincerely hope so or me and these 5 cats are going,to die from the heat…not. If the tech can’t fix it, I’m seriously going to see about downsizing and buy a Class C. I’m also tired of towing.

I was watching YouTubes on Casitas and a lady posted a video showing where her frame had broken in a couple of major places when she was accelerating from a traffic light. I don’t know how common this is, or if she traveled in places where her trailer would be exposed to salt…you might want to peek at your trailer undercarriage to see how it’s holding up. Don’t want something to happen to you two.

Happy Mother’s Day to every mama tomorrow…fur baby mamas also count. Hugs to Reggie.

    • Dawn in Asheville says:

I think I saw that video! Good luck Cat Lady on the A.C. repair – hope it’s not too expensive!

    • Dawn in NC says:

Sorry about the A/C cat lady. A few years ago, when I had to wait to get mine repaired, I was able to borrow a A/C window unit to at least keep one room cool for my cats! Good luck!

  11. Rover Ronda (WA) says:

    Wow almost single digits😃

  12. Barb from Hoquiam! says:

This place is amazing, Sue! You really captured it! Wonderful wonderful photos!

Hope things clear up soon with all the electrical ‘stuff’.

Out to putter in the sunshine!
    Hugs!

  13. Judy in East Texas says:

    Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful.
What else could be said about todays blog!

Stay safe out there my friend, judy

  14. rhodium says:

Wow, this looks like a another to add to the list of places that should be better known.

  15. Geri in the FL panhandle! says:

Sue, this would be my kinda place! Wish we had gone there to explore all the caves when I was younger and able to hike around! Let that be a lesson to all you Blogerinos out there! Get off your duff and explore while you can because you never know what tomorrow brings! Petticoats huh? 😝

  16. Jan Johnson says:

Thank you for the vicarious trip to this incredible place! Talk about dramatic landscape! I can’t imagine seeing it in person – I understand that sensory overload. I got that when I was adopting my second child in Xi’an and saw the terracotta warriors. I had read a book and seen a documentary but real life was just jaw-dropping. You have seen so many wonders of this country!

  17. Archae says:

Oops, I jumped the gun a day early but the wishes are still valid tomorrow. I’m just about out of my apartment home for the past six months. Most of the big stuff is gone and I’m at the paring down stage.., trying to be realistic about what will really fit in a small rv! 😏 Found a kind-hearted woman in town who helps people get back on their feet and gave most of my kitchen stuff to her. How many utensils, pots and pans can I use in a small microwave-two-burner-stove-kitchen!?! The bed, an overstuffed chair, computer desk chair, tv, and cabinet will also go to the kind-hearted lady. The minivan that was home for a year and a half will go to a friend whose 88 year old father needs transportation to the grocery store. I should be on the road by Wednesday at the latest!! Inspired by Sue’s wonderful photos, I’m heading north from Henderson!

  18. Rover Ronda (WA) says:

    Hi Sue & Blogorinos,
Safe travels everyone. You probably won’t see me in comments for a few weeks. I’m loading up Trixie the Trailer and my husband, fur babies, brother-in-law and I are heading south in a couple days. No reservations or real plans, just to travel highways not freeways and try not to end up anywhere too hot.😃

  19. Denise - Richmond VA says:

    Hi, Sue,

Thank you for sharing your tour of Cathedral Gorge with us. It really is unique and beautiful. In the pictures where Reggie is exploring ahead of you, with the rock formations all around, it almost looks like another planet! I don’t know why, but an old original Star Trek episode came to mind. 🙂

I sympathize with you with all of your electronics issues. When it rains, it pours, huh?! After having to replace my heat pump and washer and dryer the past few months, plus some other unexpected expenses has had me saying, “Uncle!” I hope you are able to find a good shop to replace you 12V receptacles and troubleshoot the other power issues. 🙂

Happy Mother’s Day! Sending you and Reggie love and hugs from me and Gracie pup! 🙂

  20. Dawn in MI says:

Wow. Such an interesting and beautiful place!
