Return to a popular and convenient campground — Cedar Pocket!

The previous post is in real time.

I mention that the crew and I are in our “winter home.”  That’s real time, what’s happening now in our lives.  (I’d rather not share our location until the blog is caught up in time.)

As I type this we’re living in November.  However, the blog is in October.  Okay?

Let’s step into the time machine and go back to . . .

Saturday, October 7

The crew and I hike the trails at Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, a few miles northwest of St. George, Utah.

Sunday, October 8

After three days at Red Cliffs, we’re on the road again.  Interstate 15 takes us south through St. George, followed by the magnificent Virgin River Gorge.

We make camp at Cedar Pocket Campground.

This is a familiar campground for us.  Only $8 regular/$4 with senior pass.  If you want, you can stay for a month for only $90.  There are flush toilets and trash pick-up.  Water is available at a spigot near the entrance.  No showers and no dump station.

Cedar Pocket is a popular stop for snowbirds.

The crowd ebbs and flows in the course of a week.

We arrive before the daily influx of overnighters.

I choose a nice pull-through site where the neighbors aren’t close and the view is the best.

The gravel pull-through is edged with a curved concrete curb, so the blue mat doesn’t fit. Instead I throw down the old brown comforter.  Add the two doggie beds out of the Perfect Tow Vehicle, plus the crew’s toy hedgehog, and we have instant, canine play room.

Rip it up, boys!

The next photos were taken around sunset when the light brings out the colors of the rocks.  I did not boost the color in editing.  Honest.

This view is on our right side.

This view is slightly to our left.  The cliffs are across the highway (below bottom frame).

This is our third year camping at Cedar Pocket.

Last year Reggie played with Sadie, the German Shepherd.  Of course, this place is new for Roger.

You can see more photos of the campground and Virgin River Gorge and find more information by following these links to my previous posts.

“The plant is Halogeton. From wikipedia:  Halogeton glomeratus is a species of flowering plant in the amaranth family known by the common names saltlover, Aral barilla, and halogeton.”   Thank you, SuzieQ! — Sue

    First??

  3. Joe Bruner says:

I’m cool with letting us catch up on the journey to “real time”. Your pictures are fantastic and I plan to be with you and crew to the winter stop.

  4. Calvin Rittenhouse says:

Wow! The “golden hour” (or minute) really brings out the beauty of the rocks. That’s geology at its finest. Of course, it’s good to see R & R enjoy it.

    • Mush says:

The Virgin Gorge is a geologist’s dream. I’m told (by my geology professor at SUU) that it has some of the oldest exposed rock on the planet. Just some neat info from a gal that spent most of the last two decades living in Southern Utah 😎

  5. Pat from Mich. says:

Oooh! Top five again. I love the pics of the boys!

  6. Pat from Mich. says:

I meant to say ‘top 10’, lol.

    Your winter home is lovely!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Uh-oh. I confused you.

We arrived at our “winter home” yesterday, Nov. 5th. This post is about our camp in early Oct. Look at the temps in the sidebar for Mesquite, NV (near Cedar Pocket). Brrrr! Instead we’re enjoying daily highs in the high 70s, low 80s, four camps after Cedar Pocket. 🙂

      • Cinandjules 🌵 says:

Yup I got confused! Got it!

I’m sure your winter home is lovely too! All the sites enroute to your winter home are lovely! There….how’s that?

Thanks for clearing that up…can you imagine if I followed along with a Benchmark? Remember I’m the one who couldn’t figure out where the wash was? Yup that was mwahhhhh!

  8. Kevin in CO says:

Sure glad someone found the species of that plant. I looked online for a while and did not come close. Safely arrived at your winter home, good to hear. Take care there and be safe. I will be thinking of you as the snow falls, but will be heading south asap, after the holidays.

  9. Deena in Phoenix says:

Hi Sue, love the cliffs in all their glory…seems Hedgehog is loved by both boys…have a nice night.

    Take Care

  10. Geri in the FL panhandle! says:

Love the red rocks here! This has always been one of my favorite places to see you visit! The monthly rate is very fair!
Reggie and Roger do like their toys! Tater does too! Radar used to play with Scotty all the time, but has shown no interest in toys since Scotty crossed the Rainbow Bridge!
Glad to read that you are now enjoying warmer weather. I am enjoying our cooler weather…. FINALLY!
Always looking forward to your next post! Hug the furbabies from us! Take care Sue!

Missing your Amazon link on the top right and at the bottom of the page! Did you move the link where we could buy from Amazon and give you credit?

    • Cinandjules 🌵 says:

In compliance with Amazon rules…it was changed..if you use any of the sidebar lists..it works. I USE BENCHMARKS.

Some devices don’t show the sidebar. If that’s the case, use any of the links to products purchased recently by readers (at bottom of page) and shop for what you want.

          • Geri in the FL panhandle! says:

On good, that what I did a few days ago when I needed to order more mermaid charms! I wanted to make sure you got credit .

  12. ValGal (westernWA) says:

Those red rock cliffs are just so gorgeous. A lovely place to watch the sun set.

I bought a fleece coat like the Boys for my dog. I thought it might be too small, but it’s big. She likes it and the red looks great against her black fur. I especially like the ring for the leash so I don’t have to add a harness on top. I bought it through your link.

It’s freezing here in western WA with snow yesterday. Way too early for us. It’s going to be a hard, long winter.

Hope you are having a great night.

  13. LARRY says:

Are you aware Sue that your blog no longer displays the Amazon links at the top and bottom that used to be there?

As always, Happy Trails to you!!

    Larry from the NW

  14. Barbara(Nashville) says:

Love this park and remember Bridget smiling as you push her in her car. I love the antics of the new cutie crew, but still miss Spike and Bridget. Should be interesting to see how these two do when they get older.
Glad you are warm in your new camp.

  15. Rover Ronda (WA) says:

Yes thank you SusieQ that was a difficult plant to identify.

  16. Denise - Richmond VA says:

    Hi, Sue!

So glad that you finally at your winter home! 🙂 Now you can relax and catch up with yourself. The pictures on this post and the last are gorgeous (as usual!). 🙂 I enjoyed trying to research the mystery plant. Another “weed” that has special beauty.

Thank you for clarifying the Amazon link issue. One of my sisters reads your blog periodically, and wanted to make sure that she placed her Amazon order correctly so you would get credit. I told her to click on one of the previously purchased items. It is a shame that Amazon is seemingly making it harder to earn the commissions. No worries. We will place orders the new way, and remind each other how to do so if needed. 🙂

Sending you and the boys love and hugs from me and Gracie pup! Take good care of yourselves! N’nite! 🙂

  17. Jo in OR says:

Love this campground. Happy you three are safe and warm in your winter home.

  18. Chaunte in West TN says:

    Hi Sue, Reg, and Rog!
Just popping on to say hello and am enjoying your blog as much today as I have from the beginning. Those views in this post are to die for.

  19. Dawn in Mi says:

Such a beautiful place. I’ve thought about moving to Mesquite…now I have to at least visit!

  20. So do you just naturally always stay in the most beautiful places in the country, or do you just not take pics of some of the ugly places?? Hehe. Another amazing camp, for sure!

  21. Dawn in NC says:

Woooaaa! I checked out the highs in the side bar for that camp! I’m glad you were there a month ago and not now! Lows at 160C!!!! Even with a working heater, that is COLD!!! Temperatures are finally reflecting fall weather in NC, highs in the low 70s and 60s, lows in the 50s. Finally I can turn off the A/C and not have my heat on! I am so glad at how well Roger and Reggie get along. I adopted another cat this year and despite being told that she gets along with other cats, she does not! She hates my existing cat. So, right now I have a divided household of one cat mostly upstairs and one cat downstairs. What can I do? When I adopt an animal, it’s mine come hell or high water. I love them both! So when I see Roger and Reggie as best buds, I’m really happy for you.

    • Cinandjules 🌵 says:

We used a product called Feliway. It’s a diffuser like the glade plug ins. It’s cat pheromones and it calms them. We use the multi cat formula.

In our NY house…We had two indoor cats (females)and introduced three ferals (females) into 900 sq ft and of course Annie Oakley. Ummmm…can you say a bit crowded and too much estrogen?? Needless to say..we had issues..the vets highly recommended it..I was like yeah right (rolling my eyes).

Our vet has worked with us in regards to the ferals…gave us one diffuser and refill…try it. OMG! We saw an immediate change! You don’t have to use it forever.

There is also a pheromone collar called Nutracalm 24/7 that works if your cats are use to wearing breakaway collars. 30 days…but we change them around 23.

Amazon sells both products. We used the product faithfully for 5 months…now everyone gets along, sleeps together, eats together and plays together!

It will work out…with patience. PS. If the new cat is the one with issues and your first cat is meh…I would put the diffuser where the new one mostly hangs out…same with the collar.

  22. weather says:

The 1st photo is dreamlike… “a lane in the land of make believe”. I’m glad you got the site at Cedar Pocket with the best view of such stupendous scenery. You had already driven through Virgin River Gorge, I can imagine your being taken with awe several times that day.

So it’s wonderful for you to have the crew’s sweet simple pleasures and needs to attend to. Sometimes seeing that much grandeur can become overwhelming, the smaller views and things to focus on can restore one’s normal balance, at least that’s how it is for me.

That’s a surprisingly inexpensive campground, considering all it has to offer. Nice for someone that will have to keep buying new toys, ha! Hedgehog probably won’t last long before ending up in your needs-to-be-sewn-and-mended basket 🙂

  23. ReneeG from Idaho says:

Wow. What a great deal at $90 a month! I’m looking forward to getting my Golden Age Pass next year, or whatever it’s called now.

  24. Jan in Oregon says:

Hi Sue, where’s your Amazon link these days. Tried to find it on a couple of my recent orders. Not there.. 🙂

  25. Wow , I’ve been playing to hard and I’m just caching up, great to hear the 3 of you are in your Winter camp 🤔 how does Roger like the weather down there and is your Wav3 in and working?? ,,, 👣👣🐾

    • Dawn in NC says:

Hi Rusty, how are you and Piper doing in your new home? I imagine that there are alot of projects to keep you busy. I hope that you are well!

  26. Jean in Southaven says:

I no longer have the link for Amazon on my posts from you. I even went back to earlier ones that originally showed the link and it isn’t on them either. Any ideas why?

    • rvsueandcrew says:

I’m trying to comply with Amazon rules. Use any link.

      • Jean in Southaven says:

there are no links showing on my email. When I go into the blog there used to be two links. One on the right at the top and one at the bottom just above the comments section. Now I have no links anywhere in the blog. Can I go into one of the items that you have listed as ordered and will that link me into your account?

        • rvsueandcrew says:

The two links you mention have been removed to make sure this blog is following the rules.

You asked “Can I go into one of the items that you have listed as ordered and will that link me into your account?”

          The answer is Yes! 🙂

  27. Cinandjules🌵 says:

    See comments above

  28. Cinandjules🌵 says:

    Sue,
I’m not sure what you can do or not do in regards to the rules. Perhaps you should create a blog post in CAPS…with the title Amazon links (with some sort of a “sticky” (always there) status.

That way one can find their way to the links and commission arent affected. Just an idea, certainly not telling you what to do…,

    • weather says:

That “always there” idea is why I point the links on the sidebar out, they are permanently in place. Sometimes Sue doesn’t have the time ( or enough electronic charge) left, after writing a post, to list items readers have bought. It’s likely best not to have the topic within the body of a post itself but rather to instead take care of questions only in the comments section the way we have been.Just my take, Sue will correct me if it’s the wrong answer.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

I’m not sure what I can or cannot do either. The Operating Agreement is not easily understood. I do know, through discussions on the Amazon Affiliate forum, that the more I talk about sales with my readers, the more I risk being dropped from the program. I wouldn’t dare write a post with the title you suggest!

The way it is now will have to do. I’m going to stop answering questions about it in order to be “on the safe side.” I appreciate readers stepping up with explanations for those who miss the general link and don’t know what to do. Thank you!

P.S. Yes, the sidebar links are permanently in place. However, the sidebar doesn’t display on all devices.

      • Cinandjules🌵 says:

See…by me not knowing the rules. I’ll stay out of it!
Delete my suggestion and if anyone gets lost..they can use their Benchmark! 😉

        • rvsueandcrew says:

I hope you’re not mad at me. If my comment seemed critical, it wasn’t meant to be. I appreciated your caring enough to help.

          • Cinandjules🌵 says:

Absolutely not…..I read my comment later and thought oh that didn’t come out right!

I was trying to convey that by me not knowing the rules….it’s hard to say what’s the correct way to satisfy both parties.

Directing lost folks to use their benchmarks..was an indirect clue. Hah

Always looking out for you….part of the blogorino creed. Have a wonderful day!

    • weather says:

A note about devices not showing the sidebar-

On almost all small easily portable devices with internet access(smartphones, mini ipads, etc.) there are 2 available ways to view a site/blog , the web version or mobile version. By scrolling to the bottom of a page on those devices one finds a notice offering to switch to the version not being displayed.

As an example, with your blog, on my smartphone currently I’m seeing the web version that displays the sidebar. At the bottom of the screen is written “View mobile site”-
Clicking on that switches it to a mobile version that doesn’t show the sidebar. Then a message at the bottom says “view full site”. So if I want to see the sidebar’s weather widget, links, and search boxes, etc. I click on that message.

This may help anyone that wasn’t previously aware that option is available to them. And it may be nice for you to know, for those times when you are in a hurry to publish a post without adding extra details…

      • rvsueandcrew says:

Thank you, weather, for explaining that for everyone. Very helpful! I’m sure there are many who aren’t aware of that feature.

In my experience on this blog, no matter how many times something technical is explained, there will be readers who don’t see the explanation or don’t understand it. That’s one reason why I’m trying to put links at the bottom of each post, rather than relying on the sidebar.

        Good morning!

      • Dawn in NC says:

I never knew that. I just tried it and saw the full site! Thanks Weather!

  29. bess in oregon says:

hi Sue, i haven’t written to you in a while and i do read your posts daily. i am the person that owns the turquiose and white 1955 trailer, and we met in Central Oregon in 2014.

i wanted to thank you for the recommended Dudley Pope’s Lord Ramage historical novels. i just finished the 8th one and they are very exciting. even though i would never want to be on the ocean in any boat or ship, i am learning a lot about sailing. the 1790’s were interesting times and Pope brings them alive.

    any new suggestions to read?

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, bess!

I thought I had replied to you when you asked this question previously. I’m sorry I left you hanging!

I enjoyed the Berrybender series (4 books) by Larry McMurtry. Another series where I hated to read the last page!
