Belly-deep snow!

At home in Arizona . . . .

This is the sunrise seen from our front porch a couple days ago.  It heralded the beginning of a wonderfully warm and sunny day.

That was then.

Friday, February 22

Reggie, Roger, and I step onto the front porch to greet the morning.  No pink-and-purple sunrise for us today!

This is our third snow of the season in southeastern Arizona.

No fluffy, floating, swirling flakes as in the previous snows.

I think this is the closest to a blizzard I’ve seen in over a decade. In fact, I’m not sure we ever had snow like this during the years living in Georgia.  We had the accumulation, but it took longer.  These flakes aren’t playing; they’re driven to earth.

If snowflakes could talk . . .

“Snowing Like We Mean It!”

Reg and Rog decide to “hold it.”

“Boys, you’re gonna’ hafta’ go out there sometime.  Let’s try the back yard, okay?”

As if that will be any different.

Ooh, can’t blame them for not wanting to go out in this!

A few minutes later we try the front porch again.

To the left . . .

The neighbor’s outside lights are still on.

Across the street . . .

It’s fun taking snow pics.

Good thing I loaded up the feeders before going in last night.

“Oh!  The hummer’s feeder!”

The poor thing hovers around the feeder.  He’s unable to find a “flower” from which to drink a sugar-water breakfast.  All are covered in snow.

I ditch the camera, pull down the bill of my cap, and head out into the snowfall.

How on earth does a hummingbird fly in this!

Quickly I brush the snow off each of the plastic flowers.  While making a dash to the porch, I glance over my shoulder.  Already the hummer is zooming in!

From the porch I snap this photo.

Not long thereafter, the plastic flowers are covered up again.   Run, brush, retreat.

This is dumb.  I can’t be running out there every couple minutes.  Why didn’t I put the feeder in a sheltered place?

Well, months ago I never thought it would snow like this . . . . Hmm . . . I could hang it close to the porch, under the eaves.

That’s what I do.

A few moments wondering if the hummer will see it, and, of course, he does and drinks his fill throughout the day.

Across the street a dog barks.

Reggie and Roger charge through the snow to the chain-link and bark a few “Hey, you over there!  We’re over here!”

Snow is up to their bellies and chests!

It stopped snowing!

They make their way to a yucca plant under which the snow isn’t as deep.

Relief at last!

The snowfall starts up again and continues throughout the morning, not stopping until 2:30 p.m.

Saturday, February 23

More snow fell overnight.  The boys and I stay inside most of the day.

Reggie settles in his bed that I placed in the dotted chair and covered with a throw.

Roger gives me a good excuse to not make the bed.

“Thanks, sweetie.  Go back to sleep.”

Sunday, February 24

A sunny day.  Snow is melting.

Forecast for next weekend is for temperatures in the low 70s!

My oh my…I wondered how you were !!!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

WOW! YOU’RE FAST, ELIZABETH! FIRST TODAY!

      • Elizabeth says:

Heh, just happened to be on email when yours came in…and was wondering if Narnia was still with you there…MOST of the snow has gone here, though this morning there was another skif. You know, though the HUGE dirty piles of snow about town will likely be here yet for weeks as it is not to be very warm for yet awhile. It must be very rare for you to have any snow there however. Even here we do not get any snow some years!! Happy snow days, Sue!!

        • rvsueandcrew says:

The kids got the day off from school. I saw them outside pitching snowballs…. for about 3 minutes. Then they disappeared inside. Ha!

  2. Barb in Florida says:

    Hi

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Barb!

      • Barb in Florida says:

The sunrise is beautiful! The snow is so pretty. Don’t miss it though – that’s why I’m here. Had 100″ in WI the year I moved down here.

Dogs are so funny in the snow. Can’t wait for it to melt so you can take some pictures of your fence gate wheels. Or did I miss them?

        • rvsueandcrew says:

No, you didn’t miss the wheels. I wanted to finish staining the boards before posting. I like my place to look nice. 🙂 You did see how the men reinforced the gates with diagonal boards.

I promise not to forget the wheels for Barb!

          • Barb in Florida says:

Yes I did see the diagonal boards. We purchased a gate kit online with a frame made of cedar, I think, with the notches precut to put it together. Then you would cut off the excess length. We bought two for the wide opening, but with the excess weight figuring a rebuild with some wheels will do the trick. Probably some bigger posts and some different hinges, too. Your staining is beautiful and wish I had the gumption & money for my almost 50 panels and four gates. Just thinking of it makes me want to buy an rv and move away.

            • rvsueandcrew says:

The building of the gates has been epic. As you know, gates like to sag and the bigger the gate, the more it likes to sag.

At first the men put two hinges on each of the two sections of gate. A powerful wind came through and actually bent one of the hinges. Now there are three hinges on both sides. They’re decorative black and look nice.

The diagonal boards seem to be holding well against sag. The smaller gates may receive a diagonal wire (available in kits) that can be tightened as needed to counteract sagging over time.

The first wheels the men tried were too big. The present ones are just right.

    Nice pics..remind me of home

It’s been a crazy year for weather

  5. Elaine Magliacane says:

Brrr… belly high snow is no joke to the canine crew… beautiful though.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Hi, Elaine! I towelled off their chests and bellies when they came in. After a while, later in the day, they were hopping around in the snow without a care.

  6. AZ Jim (missing my baby) says:

Fun post. That’s where my hummer feeder is, under the patio roof. I developed a roof leak in the last storm in the house (ironically it is in Detta’s BR as though the sky was weeping at her loss). Just what I didn’t need. Hug

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Jim,

The sky weeps over her vacant room, such a poignant picture of your sorrow, Jim. Hug.

I hope you’re able to find someone to repair that leak. Everything is dripping here, as the snow melts.

    • weather says:

” …as though the sky was weeping at her loss”, oh, Jim, even as you grieve you have within you the heart of a poet. Hugs and love, weather

    • Barb in Florida says:

Oh Honey – sending you a great big hug. I didn’t reply before on your loss as I was so sad for you. Been there. Welcome to the sucky widow/widower’s club. We’re not a fun bunch at first, but we know how you feel. It does get better, especially if you try to focus on all the love and happy memories. They don’t want us to be sad. They love us and I feel it never leaves.

They say rain on a funeral day is tears from your loved one from heaven. It is raining today, up north (midwest) and I am missing my best friend MIL’s funeral today. So many people had to cancel due to weather, but my boys didn’t want me to go for other reasons, too. It’s very difficult to move so far away from family and friends. But being here with you all and being able to share alittle with you, Jim, helps alot. Thank you for that! Love ya!! Barb

P.S. Hope the roof fix isn’t too bad.

    • Denise - Richmond VA says:

Sending you loving thoughts and a warm *hug*, Jim.

    • Elizabeth says:

      So sorry Jim…sending hugs!!

    • Cat in KC, MO says:

I have thought about you many times AZ Jim, and hope you will think of that leak as Detta’s spirit being there with you.

      BIG (((hugs))) from KC, MO!!!

      • AZ Jim says:

My thanks to you all for your well wishes. I will continue to try to live again. Detta always wanted the best for me and I know she is still pulling for me to try. I shall try….Hugs to all….

        • Barbara (Nashville) says:

Hugs back to ya, Jim. My condolences for your loss.

        • Geri from the FL panhandle says:

💗hugs and 🙏 prayers are being sent to you Jim! I know you must miss your sweetheart Detta something awful! Just know she still loves you and is watching over you. Loss is hard, know you are loved here by all of us!💗

    • Cynthia in San Clemente says:

The skies may be weeping but the angels are singing sweet welcoming melodies. One day at a time Jim – we are all here for you.

    • Krystina says:

So sorry to hear of Detta’s passing Jim. She is still with you in spirit and watching over you every minute of every day.

  7. Columbus Calvin says:

I’m glad you can get pretty pictures of the snow and maybe even enjoy it a little. It seems Reggie and Roger have more my attitude, that it’s something to cope with if I must.

Your furnishings look even more comfy in contrast to the snow. This is the time to appreciate them, for sure.

We’re having an interesting twist to our weather here in Ohio. We have wind (30 mph steady, gusting to around 50) without lightning or precipitation. It’s another story to tell later. Weather is not small talk here.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Calvin,

We certainly are appreciating our comfy furnishings and our reliable heater. I lie in bed at night and hear it click on and say a prayer of thanksgiving. Ha!

I imagine weather is BIG talk when gusts are around 50 mph. Wind is tough to bear, whether in snowy Ohio or the dusty desert around Blythe, California. When I watched the blowing dust out the window of the BLT, it never occurred to me that one day not far off I’d be watching snow flurries from my house window.

I hope the weather settles down for you so you can get out and about.

  8. weather says:

The boys barking so another dog will know that they heard the bark signalling the canine neighborhood roll call, and that they’re there, is such an endearing part of dogs’ social life to me. I’m guessing all the creatures living near you are glad to find whatever makes life feel normal to them during difficult or strange storms. It’s so nice to know the efforts you put forth to take care of as many as you do, Sue. Curvy befriending you doesn’t surprise me in the least. I am convinced that animals should be credited with having far more understanding than most people believe. You are watched and cared for because of all that you are and do.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Thank you for your sweet note, weather. It’s a pleasure, as you know, to help creatures with what they need for survival.

You should’ve heard all the chirping and chattering and singing of the birds as they gobbled up the seed during the storm. They were extremely excited and happy. It went on all day long. I could hear them while inside the house.

Today they’re quieter. I imagine them comfy within the cypress tree or under the roof tiles where the air is warm from the sun heating the terra cotta.
Sleeping off their big feast! 🙂

I agree. Animals understand. Their “understanding” necessarily is concealed by instincts. Otherwise people would be all over them.

Curvy is a delight. Many times I look up from what I’m doing — “Oh, THERE you are!” and we exchange looks. I notice he prefers corn from the seed mix. I’ll pick up some next time I go to the store. Doves will probably go for it, too.

Oh yeah. We all “are watched and cared for.” 🙂

  9. Pat McClain says:

There’s an old saying about snow ; ‘Sticky, no sticky, no sticky, sticky’. Your snow looks pretty sticky, so it shouldn’t stick around long. We are having rain, snow and wind right now. The poor dogs came in looking like snow dogs, but a quick shake deposited their snow on the floors, sigh. The wind is fierce though, around 32mph with gusts up to 65mph or so the weather report says. Our Curby (trash dumpster) is down the road somewhere. Neither of us wants to go looking for it yet, lol.

  10. Cat in KC, MO says:

This is only the second time I have seen a hummingbird at a feeder in the snow (the first time was here). LOL

I once followed a now defunct blog of a couple who still live in Puerto Vallarta. They had a hummingbird feeder that got too hot at certain times of the year and the liquid turned sour or evaporated very quickly. So they were creative just like you, and cut an umbrella in half and hooked it right above their feeder, which was hanging on the side of their patio wall.

I think winter has been crazy for people all across the U.S. and I for one, am soooo over this winter!!!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Cat!

Funny you mention the umbrella for a hummingbird feeder. That was my first thought. Then I thought, well, it’d be a lot simpler to move the dang feeder, especially in a snow storm!

Ha! This is the place to come for hummers in the snow pics! 🙂

I was thinking of folks like yourself who experience many more days of snow than we do. I’m becoming restless for a day outside in the sun. I remember how February, the shortest month, could seem like the longest. How did I ever handle long stretches of cold and snow? How does anyone? You can see how spoiled I am. 🙂

Spring, as always, is going to be grand!

  11. Denise - Richmond VA says:

    Hi, Sue,

Wow! You are getting a lot of snow! Thank you for sharing the pretty pictures. It has been raining hard most of this week. Too much saturated ground over the last 6 weeks or so. If it was colder, we would have deep snow like other parts of the country.

Speaking of dogs not wanting to go outside to do their business in bad weather…. Has anyone trained their pup to “go” on a puppy pad or newspaper inside during bad weather? It goes against what we teach them, “no pee or poop in the house!”, but I am thinking that I may need to come up with a solution. Gracie is now terrified of hard rain and wind (I think the hurricanes that passed over us last summer are the cause) and she really doesn’t want to go out during heavy snow, either. My little pup is 9 1/2 years old, so holding it for too long is really not good for her. Sometimes she will go out and do her thing on the porch….which is fine. Any suggestions?

This afternoon it has finally stopped raining, and the sun is trying to make an appearance. Yippee!! 🙂

Your little thrasher friend may be keeping a close eye on you because your yard cleanup may mean a tasty meal for him. I have had a similar experience with a couple robins. If I am pulling weeds, or planting, they know to stay nearby as the disturbed dirt and mulch may stir up bugs….dinner! 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your day, Sue. Reggie and Roger looked so happy (and tuckered out) to be snuggled in the warmth of their beds! Sending you all lots of love and hugs from me and Gracie pup! 🙂

    • Denise - Richmond VA says:

Oh! I have a suggestion for your hummingbird feeder. Look for a plastic dome, the kind used to dissuade squirrels. That would keep the feeder free from snow and rain.

      • rvsueandcrew says:

I’m thinking of hanging a hummingbird feeder from the mesquite in the back yard. Your idea is good for that one.

I can pick up a shallow, plastic bowl at the thrift shop for a quarter and rig up a shield like you mention.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Denise and Gracie pup,

If it isn’t snowing, it’s raining! Poor Gracie. The pee pads sound like a good idea to me, but I don’t really know.

Blogorinos: What do you know about pee pads for dogs? Is this a good solution for Gracie pup? Is the training difficult?

You’re probably right about Curvy, although he does come around when I’m on the patio, too. Your robins are like cow egrets that walk along with cows in Florida, to get the bugs the hooves stir up or sit on their backs. Not inferring you’re a cow! Oh! Hahaha! Sorry about that, Denise. 🙂

You enjoy the rest of your day, too. Hope you get lots of sunshine. Love and hugs going eastward to your home across the country!

      • Denise - Richmond VA says:

        LOL!!!! 🙂

        • Cinandjules 🌵 says:

My moms dog (Papillion) refused to go outside when it rained. My mom taught her how to go on pee pads. You may want to collect some of Gracie pups pee (flat Tupperware and shove it under when she pees outside. Then put it in the middle of the pee pad. My mom also put a plastic oil pan down…Bella liked to travel!

Gracie may not want to go inside fearing she will be in trouble! But once you start using the pee pads you must keep it up..or she’all go where it was! Don’t want to confuse her!

If it was me..I would go outside, have a treat in your hand and reassure her it’s okay! To this day. AO gets a pooper Cookie rain or shine. It was the only way to get her to do #2 in the snow! Best wishes

          • Denise - Richmond VA says:

Thank you for the suggestion, Cindy. I have tried to get Gracie to go on newspaper and she just won’t do it. She does not want to make a mess in the house. I think I will try your treat based positive enforcement when we go outside in bad weather. That, plus her storm shirt might help reassure her.

We had a small power surge a few minutes ago and Missy ran behind the couch in terror. I have air cleaning machines running and when that happens they make a sound like they are shutting off and then powering back up. Gracie now associates that sound with a storm. For having underground electrical service, if it gets too windy, the electric will blip. There must be a weak point at the substation which is above ground. Gracie finally believed me that all is ok….she is now snuggled on my lap.

    • Elizabeth says:

We always went out with snow shovel and made a fair-sized space for the dogs to go pee…of course, so long as snowing was going on, we had to keep going out some…but esp. for dogs who respond well to rewards for so-doing, use cookies or whatever. Our dog so spoiled us…pleasing us and getting praise was always enough…heh, treats she got a lot of, just because…I do think it helps them if you go out too… Well, this year has been something else…most likely that will not happen again for some time…

      • Denise - Richmond VA says:

        Hi, Elizabeth,

Once I clear the little back porch and steps down to the patio, The next priority is to shovel a good sized path in the snow for Gracie’s potty area. Gracie pup loves to play in the snow after it has stopped falling.

I will add treats and more positive reassurance for Gracie pup during stormy weather potty breaks.

    • Pat McClain says:

I use old bed pads. They can be bought by the boxful for about 2 or 3 dollars each. I have been washing mine for 2 years now.

  12. Dawn in Michigan says:

Getting wind and snow here in Michigan. Pretty tired of it all here. We are ready for spring.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

That’s understandable, Dawn. Wish I had pics of desert lilies or something springlike to post, something other than more snow . . . .

  13. Suzicruzi says:

    Hi Sue,
Ajo got a couple inches of rain all day Thursday. It was a good day to stay in and watch movies and read and do a bit of writing. I used Organ Pipe and the surrounding foothills got snow instead of rain. The ridges along Gun Site wash were white. Is this a crazy winter, or what?

At Belly Acres, we took showers and did some laundry on Friday, and here came the rain again! This time, within minutes it was hail! Ha! Couldn’t believe it! It’s been fun seeing what the surrounding areas got snow-wise; Tucson, Scottsdale, and did you see Flag? 4 feet!! Holy!

We finally got our first glimpse of Javelinas coming back from town on Saturday. They were just past the Fire station on the South end of town. I would have rather seen them out here in the wild, but after 2 months of not seeing any, seeing some in town was a treat.

We had a 10* warmer morning this morning out here on Darby Well Road. Actually Larry has corrected me saying we are on West Alley Rd, Not Darby Well. But you know what I mean. We are past the intersection of Bates Well, but not as far as the turn to the little Mexican Cemetary. Which by the way, I love visiting. I find it so colorful and beautiful- much more cheerful than the more modern cemeterys.

We did put large sheets of Reflectix in our windows overnight, and it’s just a little thing, but it seems to make a difference if my head is cold at night or not. We have down sleeping bags we bring out on very cold nights, and truthfully, we sleep just fine. It’s just that 6-9 am period of time that we are cold.

Yes to 70’s this coming week! 78* by Friday! That’s more like it. 😁

Thanks for the beautiful pictures of the snow and the boys. Fun!
    Talk to you later Sue,

    Suzi

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Well, Sue, it happened to me. I wrote a long reply and it disappeared when I tried to post it. Errrggh! I’ll come back later!

      • Geri from the FL panhandle says:

It happens to me often when I try to write a post here. Today’s went through with no problem!

      • Suzicruzi says:

        That’s okay Sue,
I’ll take it as “it’s the thought that counts!”

It’s happened to me, and it’s funny, but when it does it takes the wind out of your sails. Ha. I never feel like trying to say all that again. 🙂

We are at the library at the moment downloading a few movies off our Prime membership. While doing so, lots of police and two ambulances screamed by heading South. (I get so ruffled and concerned. Just me.) Lo and behold, a fatal on the road to Why, and the road is closed at the fire station. Sad. :-(.

Since it’s Tuesday, we can stay put in town, and go to the community dinner at the Conference Center. Tonight they are having fresh fish and shrimp tacos from Rocky Point. Ha! No burros for dinner tonight! That will forever make me laugh now!

We have a plan to wait for mail, clean the waste tanks at Belly Acres, take one last hot shower there, then head out towards Ironwood Forest Nat’l Mon. by week’s end. *Got a great tip from another Boondocker. 🙂 From there to Picacho State Park for a night, and then S to Buenos Aires, and maybe Nogales. All subject to change of course, “as the world turns”. Heading North from there, we’ll check out Patagonia Lake for possible boondocking spots near there. And then, maybe head to Los Cienegas? Since the weather is warming up now, I see Tombstone and Bisbee in our future in March. Yay! Our migration begins again! I’ve felt so stagnant lately, and have that “it’s time to go” feeling.

Thanks again for the great reply! You are so fun to have my morning coffee with! Give the boys belly rubs, Aloha!

        Suzi

All the news that isn’t from Greenville, S.C. Our rain gauge overflowed at over 5″ in one week. At last, the sun is shining. I so love the Pacific N.W. but can’t imagine living there. We’ve had cabin fever “big time”, but health issues keeping us home until some issues resolved. We’ve been taking our now 6 months old kitten, Mia, for short rides so she can travel and go camping with us. Up until now, she loved it. Today, she was not a happy camper! 🙄 A hint for those with pets who need more exercise indoors…tie a
toy to the end of the line on a fishing rod. Keep casting/pulling in. Big fun and it wears them out! Love the snow with the puppers pics! That little hummingbird needs to head way down south. Judy in now sunny S.C. 🌞

  16. Cinandjules 🌵 says:

Hmm ya think we moved to the wrong Arizona?
It snowed about 15 minutes north of us! You guys got hammered!
Reg and Rog are silly! Something with small dogs they rather hold it than venture off in the rain or snow! Maybe they don’t like it touching their stomach! Kind of like when getting into the pool…one stops when the cold water reaches your belly button!
    We had hail up here.
Love fluffy snow…dislike heavy wet snow…East coasters know what I’m talking about!
No worries about the hummingbird feeder..sugar water takes longer to freeze…and their beaks can penetrate the snow.
Love the photo of Reg on his bed.
Sun is finally out today…AO is chillaxing! Have a great day.
    PS the “haboob” is over…😉

  17. Hilogene in Az says:

Isn’t Arizona amazing. Just when you think the weather is predictable. ;). We didn’t get snow in our part of Phoenix but the mountains were covered and I had to wear a winter coat, scarf and gloves to walk the dog!

  18. Cat Lady, Baton Rouge, La. says:

Are you sure you moved to Arizona?

  19. Omg love reg & Roger in belly deep snow

  20. Pauline in Mississippi says:

What fun!!! Your pictures are wonderful. I didn’t know that Arizona got snow like that. Glad you got the feeder moved for the poor hummingbirds!!

    Stay safe and warm.
Love to you and the crew

  21. Barbara (Nashville) says:

Your snow fall is beautiful, but it was shocking that there was so much of it. Reg & Rog reminded me of Angel trying to avoid the snow, but she hates the rain more. She hops around in the snow like a rabbit. She is really funny.

We officially broke the record for rain in February. It has rained 12.57 inches here since the first of the month, nearly 2 inches above the record set in 1880. We have more rain predicted this coming week. If it rains 1 more inch, we will have more rain that in the flood of May 2010. of course, all of that rain came in about a 24 hr. period.

Angel doesn’t like to go out in the rain either. If it is light she will go, and doesn’t mind if it picks up while we are out there, but if it is moderate to heavy to start, she will hold it. Angel and Gracie Pup are about the same age. She turned 9 earlier this month.

Blogorinos: Do any of you have home remedies for curing a dog’s upset stomach?

    • Denise - Richmond VA says:

      Hi, Barbara,

So sorry that little Angel has an upset tummy. The thing that works best for me is to make Gracie some chicken broth with white rice. If I have chicken breasts in the freezer, I will make my own broth. If not, I will use canned, low sodium broth. The serving is more broth than rice. After 4 feedings, if Gracie has tolerated it with no upset, I will add some chicken to the mix. After a couple more days, I will transition her back to kibble. Gracie gets fed twice a day, a scant half cup of kibble.

I hope Angel feels better soon!

After 4 feedings, if Gracie has tolerated it with no upset, I will add some chicken to the mix. After a couple more days, I transition her back to kibble. Gracie gets fed twice a day, a scant half cup of kibble.

I hope Angel feels better soon!

I’ll have to agree with Denise rice and boiled chicken! Anything bland: Scrambled eggs, mashed potato, canned pumpkin, oatmeal, yogurt or cottage cheese. (The last two ONLY if she doesn’t have the boo boos!

If she has the “boo boos” make sure she drinks water so she doesn’t get dehydrated.

Whenever our dogs have an upset tummy (usually evidenced by runny poo or constipation) we give them a little pumpkin right out of the can (not pumpkin pie filling!). It works wonders.

    • Elizabeth says:

Not for sure if it would work…but it sure helps us old humans. Hubby and I keep those little applesauce (without added sugars) on hand for when our tummies act up…sure helps. Our dogs always loved apples in any form, and we never saw it have ill effects on them…but I am not positive what is ok either…

Thanks everyone. I knew someone out there probably had a remedy. I asked as I had to take to the emergency vet last week as she kept acting like she was going to be sick and had a lump in her throat. I took her outside, she ate some grass but still didn’t take care of the issue, so an hour later off to the vet. They told me to stop giving her Greenies, did that but she is still having issues. The last 5 days she has gotten a bit of hot dog & 5 of the mini saltine crackers at bedtime. That has helped, but not totally fixed it.
I will try the broth/rice and the pumpkin. Thanks again.

In the past….Greenies had a reputation of causing blockages. They have since changed the ingredients. Even though vets often sell them..it doesn’t mean they are good. Has Angel pooped at all? Or does she have the poops? Sometimes a long walk will get the innerds flowing. Maybe a recheck at your vet would be wise if it doesn’t clear up soon. Hope Angel feels better soon!

Poor thing! I hope Angel gets some relief soon! **hugs** for you, Barbara. I know it is stressful when our pups are sick and cannot tell us what is wrong.

    Hi!
I betcha that hummer was so thankful you cared to brush off the snow and also moved the feeder to a better spot that was snowfree! You are a good nature lover parent person!

    Huggles,
    Laura

  23. Cynthia in San Clemente says:

Oh, I just love the pics of the boys in the snow. They are so adorable! I am laughing at your luck Sue, you would probably move to Alaska and they would have a heat wave! How wonderful of you to take care of the hummers in the snow – how did you keep their food from freezing!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Cynthia!

I guess the overnight low in the 20s wasn’t long enough to freeze the water in the hummingbird feeder, although the bird bath water did have ice on it.

(BTW, I love the message you gave to AZ Jim. Your writing lightly caresses.)

I love all your snow pics. It’s been many years since I’ve seen snow, and I miss the beauty of it when it’s freshly fallen. I feel sorry for all the wildlife creatures who may have a tough time foraging for food, especially during extreme weather conditions. Mother Nature can give us both beauty and tragedy at the same time. Your little neighborhood birds are lucky to have you helping them, Sue.

OMG! That is A LOT OF SNOW for southern AZ! Looks like everybody except Florida is having wicked cold, wind and SNOW! Not to brag, but our weather Saturday was perfect for Mardi Gras and selling Mermaid Tears! 73° and sunny! Waking up to a chilly morning in the 40°’s this morning! Keep those boys warm and the hummingbirds fed! We love you!

    GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE!

I hope you are well this 25th day of February.

Looks like I’m not going to reply individually to each comment as I had planned. The warm sunshine has drawn the crew outside and I’m eager to join them.

A few patches of snow remain but will disappear soon. I need to go to town for more birdseed!

    Bye for now,
    Sue

P.S. As always I read and enjoyed every comment. I love it when someone asks for advice and they get answers from fellow blogorinos. 🙂

Love your pics from this post. Hope you and the pups are surviving the winter. Have followed you know for over 10 years. Have a great rest of the year. Look forward to seeing more great pics.

Crazy winter weather every where this year !!! We are getting super slammed with snow where I live in Lake Tahoe, Ca. 4 to 5 feet each storm and they keep on coming. Beautiful photos of it snowing and the little birdies trying to find their food!

Hi Everyone! Seems like I’m late to the party this time! 😉 We don’t have snow, but have had lots of rain and cloudy days. If we get two sunny days in two weeks, I’m starting to feel fortunate. I’m trying to pretend I’m in England, to make the grey days seem nicer! I love your thoughtfulness for the birds and the hummers during the snow and regular weather. I used to have bird feeders, but with such a small space and such tall bushes, it takes a long time for the birds to find the food. Originally, years ago, I first got bird feeders to entertain the cats. Then, I started watching the birds more than the cats did! Once spot I lived in had the BEST variety of birds. I miss that where I live now. Glad that the snow is melting and your are getting out into the sunshine. There is nothing better than sunbathing on a cool day. Give the pups a belly scratch for me!

    • Elizabeth says:

Liked your idea…pretending to live in England, Dawn. When we used to live in NC, we had so many cardinals and mocking birds. One of the mocking birds seemed to always be by our garage door…and LOVED when my hubby played good music while working out there and would sing and sing and sing. We do miss that…them and the “deck buddies”: squirrels that lived in our back yard and would even come to the sliding door, putting their feet up on the glass, looking in and waiting for us to put more peanuts out for them!! FUN days!!

      • Dawn in NC says:

Thanks Elizabeth! Yeah, I love squirrels too. Where I’m living even used to have chipmunks. One summer, they tried tunneling under my back porch, which is a solid slab of concrete, right beside the concrete foundation for my town house. Needless to say, they did not succeed. Unfortuately, my neighbor is petrified of chipmunks getting into her house. So much so that she poisons the ground around our unit by putting moth balls all over! :0

        • Elizabeth says:

My whoever would be afraid of those little creatures?? Must not smell too great near you…so sorry!! Our landlords control weeds around this place with Roundup…most people know it causes cancer…another reason I will be glad to move at some point. (And the man has leukemia…go figure!!)

    • Denise - Richmond VA says:

      Hi, Dawn,

I can relate! We have had the same cold, grey, wet weather. Today was warmer, and the sun was out all day. It was glorious! More soggy weather will be coming through later this week. Rain and maybe some snow….same for next week.

I am ready for Spring! 🙂

  30. Cat in KC, MO says:

Just stopping by to tell a funny story about a guy I talked with at my grocery store yesterday. As he was sacking my groceries, he started telling the checker and me that he heard that hummingbirds fly on the backs of other birds to get to their winter homes in México. The checker and I laughed out loud, and I told him that wasn’t really true, but that they DO eat from hummingbird feeders covered with snow in Arizona. We went back and forth for a bit, and I was wishing I had this blog on my iPhone because I would have gladly shown him the photos. LOL

21 days and counting! I am soooo ready for spring!
