What felt like summer yesterday, feels like spring today. The air temperature dropped and clouds moved in. Yesterday I wore short sleeves and shorts. This morning I pull on long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. It’s a great day to be out and about!
I unhitch the Best Little Trailer.
Reggie and I board the Perfect Tow Vehicle and motor a couple miles south on Route 111 as it stretches beside the Salton Sea. We turn into Salt Creek Primitive Camping Area.

Gee, hardly anyone camped here . . . .
Salt Creek is just as scenic as Corvina Beach.
It’s not as popular, I think, because the “facilities” are portable buildings without the flush toilets of Corvina. The camping fee is the same: $10 regular, $8 for seniors. If toilet quality is irrelevant to your camping style, you might prefer Salt Creek.
I camped at Salt Creek with my original crew in November 2012.
That was when Spike, ever the adventurer, got in trouble for sneaking off for a soak in the Salton Sea: “A new camp at the Salton Sea, and ‘Spikey! You didn’t!”
When we return to camp, I scatter bread crumbs on the picnic table
This will bring in photo opportunities . . . .
The table is below our sitting area (See photo below). Our outdoor room is like elevated box seats in a grand theater!
It’s chilly for lounging, so I go inside to get the comforter. While inside several gulls descend on the picnic table in a flurry and fracas of wings and squawks.
The bread crumbs disappear quickly.
A California Gull?
Wrapped in the comforter with Reggie’s warm body on my lap, I’m entertained by the shore birds. The pelicans arrive in floating ribbons above the surface of the Sea, in groups of five to twenty.
Occasionally a gull leaves the gang at the shoreline to circle the camp, perhaps hopeful I’ll break out more bread. I make several attempts to capture a gull-in-flight photo and I’m not very successful.
Although not good quality technically, I do like this next shot.
What a wing span in proportion to body size! What grace in flight!
Very few campers at Corvina Beach on this Monday.
The Super Bowl party group (above photo) has left. Also gone is the fee-jumper (an assumption based on late arrival and early departure — I could be wrong) who parked between us and the group.
Reggie and I walk the beach, heading north.
Clouds have gathered, obscuring the sunlight.
The “sand” is coarse. Actually we’re walking on ground-up barnacles.
Reggie expresses his dominance over this strange, new land!

We return to camp and I pause to marvel at our home.
It may be small but it’s our castle!
Salton Sea sunsets can be spectacular.
Tonight’s sunset is more subdued than ones I’ve witnessed before. No flashes of orange and pink, no shimmering gold on the water.
Well, there are times when a colorful party dress, all bling and flash, is appropriate. Other times, a little, black dress is perfect!

Wow – 3rd place! Home with a nasty head cold. Thanks for the pictures of the gulls. My husband used to have a hat the read, “I hate seagulls”. The bill of the hat had what looked like bird droppings on it. He always got comments when he wore it. Not sure where that hat ended up. 😉

That is a great shot of the BLT – awning out, outdoor room all set up and festive. Love the pic of Reggie “demonstrating his dominance” – LOL! Does he zoom in sand? If so, I’ll bet he gets quite a workout, even in barnacle sand. Hope you are feeling much better!
Thank you, Rochelle…. Reggie doesn’t zoom in the barnacle sand. Up on the higher level there’s a path that goes to the state campground (Mecca). It has soft sand, perfect for the Zoominator.

Almost as good as the ocean with the seagulls and pelicans! And no sea sickness!
Hi, Mary…. The Salton Sea doesn’t have big waves like the ocean, but sometimes it does have small waves breaking at the shore. I love that shushing sound. I don’t know what causes these little waves because they’re here on the calmest of days, and at other times there are none.

Love this post. Next time try to get some pictures of the Pelicans. I love watching gulls and pelicans and other birds. When I lived next to the ocean I could sit and watch the birds all day. Reggie is a big dog in a little dogs body. So cute. I love the Salton Sea area. Someday I will be back there. Thanks for the post, made my afternoon.

Thanks, Renee. We are enjoying this sunny day. If I remember correctly, the other beach — Salt Creek — has a walking path, too. The main reason I like Corvina Beach is this one site at the end where people tend not to camp. If this site weren’t available, I had planned to look for a site at Salt Creek.

Reggie is such a scamp. You were very lucky in finding him. Although you may think of getting another pooch I don’t see a need other than just to have two. Reggie has the presence of several dogs.
I am still here in El Paso( doesn’t show me much) I will be leaving on the 17th heading for a month east of Yuma and then back to Pahrump. and then Grand Junction with a side trip to Pismo Beach Ca.

I admire your ability to plan ahead! I don’t have any idea where our next camp will be. Apparently you like Pahrump. You were there last year. I’ve never been over that way and I’m becoming curious, so maybe that’s a place we will visit this year.
You make a good point about Reggie being enough, in himself alone. I was thinking the same thing this morning. I vacillate between seeing him enjoying a partner and seeing him loving his life as it is now, being the only object of my affections. Ha!

I hadn’t really planned on going back to Pahrump any time soon.But my niece lives in Pismo beach and is expecting her third child any time now. My brother and sister in law are going there in April so I figured I should take the opportunity and meet up with them. As Pahrump is right on the CA border it is a pretty easy drive to Pismo. Other than that and Death Valley there isn’t all that much around Pahrump, except casinos. I am also wanting to see my cousin in GJ again. So it all just kinda fell together.
It’s wonderful how you can visit family without them having to prepare sleeping/eating arrangements for you. You are shaping a good life for yourself, Alan. 🙂
Nice, peaceful post for a cloudy cool day. It looks pretty much the same here although it has been sprinkling lightly all morning. I love sitting outside with a comforter wrapped around me when it’s cold, especially if there is a dog in my lap. However, it tends to work out better when it’s the 15 pound terrier, not the 85 pound pit bull. Your little Casita Castle looks very warm and cozy – plus it has a refrigerator!!! What more could you ask for?

I want the reader to feel like he/she is standing in the doorway of the BLT, for instance, looking past the awning support at the sun behind clouds at the horizon. The Salton Sea looks so lovely seen through your eyes. A few posts ago I saw you got Amazon credit for the solar suitcase that we purchased. We are planning to use it on our first big trip in our “new” (to us) trailer- a 17 foot Bigfoot trailer. We purchased it used last fall, and have been getting the bugs out of our used Dodge Van, and ready for the trek down to sunny (I hope!) S. CA. So far we are delighted with the rig….so roomy and spacious compared to our previous Rialta, a class B. It sure will be nice to leave our “home” on a site, and have the freedom to drive to a trailhead, the grocery, or even a laundromat… We plan to leave mid-March. Hopefully we’ll miss the snow on the way down, and the flowers will be in bloom…

Thanks, Nancy, for confirming my gull ID guess. I use a different method than observing leg color. It goes like this: This here bird is a gull and we’re in California. Got it! It’s a California gull!!!! 🙂 If the dang thing flies over to Arizona, my technique falls apart.

I have good news & bad news.
Bad first – my beloved Rover has a bad head gasket. Common tale for Rovers, and we knew it going in but found a good deal n bought it anyway for sentimental reasons. AND the same week- our Prius was hit n totaled by an uninsured motorist.
Good News – very very grateful my husband who was driving the Prius (technically stopped at a red light) was not hurt!! AND we have a new tow vehicle for Trixie the Trailer; Rex the Ram King (Ram3500 diesel crew cab) Once again my husband found a great deal. It’s a basic “Tradesman” package, but we feel like we’re in luxury! Compared to my Rover Disco it seems huge. Lots of room for us and the dogs, easy to clean vinyl floors. If you noticed truck steps in your Amazon affiliate sales, my sweet husband ordered those for me. My standard dachshunds 🐾can jump in easier than me. 😃 My jaw dropped when I saw Maggie fly up in there. Dachshunds sure aren’t afraid of heights. At least not mine.
Hopefully we’ll be getting Rover fixed but no more long trips. I would be sad if I had to change my blogorino name. Ram Ronda is another alliteration and I am an Aries. But Rover is more descriptive of me, not only geographically, I’ve lived in 4 states & 5 countries and visited 50 states & 33 countries. Mentally I’m a day dreamer/ or night oftentimes I can’t get to sleep for all the roving my mind is doing. As a homemaker I rove around the house easily distracted while cleaning. I actually use the timer on my phone to remind me to move the laundry from the washer to the dryer or to not stop a particular task until the timer goes off.
Well there’s my news.
Like you I especially like the picture of the seagull with the impressive wing span. Beautiful! I like the pictures of Reggie on the beach too.

This was one of my favorite blog posts. (Except for the one with the fridge and Reggie trying to play with the cats. Your comments kept me laughing!) The BLT looks so warm and inviting as does the sand and sky. I guess I’m longing for warmth and tired of these cold northeast winters. (I’m in NH). Went into a kind of daydream trance looking at the photo of the Salton Sea and just before I snapped out of it, the ripples in the water appeared to be moving as if I was looking at a video. Funny how when you stare at something, your eyes can play tricks on you. It was as if I went on a little vacation! Hope to spend next winter in a warm climate (and maybe all future winters). Really, I like all the photos in this post. The one of the gulls on and above the picnic table is particularly appealing to me. There’s something so beautiful about feathers on an outstretched wing of a bird. Seeing a shot from behind or above one is a treat, as it’s such a good display of the combinations of form and color making the amazing design of that show clearly.
My favorite phrase that you wrote is “….I pause to marvel at our home.” To many, after all this time, it would seem like “old hat”. Your still appreciating it anew so often is such a wonderful expression of how you live with gratitude. I know part of my happiness in life is connected to the fact that each day has found me glad about some aspect of each home I’ve had. “… our castle”- perfectly delightful way to see it, thanks, Sue!

Aw-w, reading your reply makes me smile! After running errands on this gorgeous day (well above freezing, beautiful clouds that the sun peeks through now and then, no precipitation, clear dry roads – made for a lovely drive), I was hungry. That made me glad I’d cooked extra food for supper last evening so I could just warm the leftovers. Though I can and do cook almost every day, it’s not something I honestly enjoy doing.
Not going out for already prepared foods now that you have a working fridge is quite a change- for both you and Reggie. On your part, a bit more cooking . On his , your Repeat Rule of Dogs comes to mind. If you go back to offering him sautéed chicken each morning you may have years of him expecting that to look forward to. I know you felt great about doing that for Spike and Bridget, and their occasional impatience while waiting just showed that they really enjoyed it. Still, Reggie’s indignant and angry reaction when his burger didn’t arrive when he thought it should at the drive through, while funny, may not seem so if done at home in some future time. Not that I’m suggesting anything, just somethings I was thinking and curious about.
Your day does sound gorgeous. I’m glad for you.
No more cooking chicken for crew… Reggie receives a small about of chopped chicken from a can or from a rotisserie chicken. The small cans of white chicken breast make two breakfasts for him. He’s happy with that. The rest of the day he has grain-free kibble available whenever he wants it. I admit life is easier this way. Another gift received due to the loss of refrigeration. 🙂

I’m a long time reader and found your blog while looking for suggestions for traveling with dogs. I’ve read the blog from the beginning – what an amazing journey! Thank you for sharing so much and for being a source of inspiration and encouragement.
I took your suggestions when I recently decided ( after 4 years of shopping and indecision) to buy a TAG xl max travel trailer. The size is just right and all we need for our type of travel. The next task is to get Izzy and Lilly comfortable in it. We’re working on that this winter while the TAG is in the garage and they can visit it. When the weather here gets hot and humid this summer, I’d like to take the pugs north to the Upper Peninsula, MI to run in the sand and dip their paws in cold Lake Superior. Also, a trip north on the scenic route along the Mississippi River in WI and return on the Minnesota side. I read that at certain times of the spring and fall the aurora borealis can be seen from upper Minnesota and Michigan…would love to see that, but right now I’m at the Salton Sea, in spirit that is. Your photos convey a sense of presence to me. I feel like I’m there holding Reggie’s tether, looking out at the surrounding landscape, and up at that beautiful gull with the amazing wingspan.

Your lifestyle looks so amazing! I am a traveler by nature, I love to see and explore new places, and hate being tied down. Unfortunately, at this time in my life, I need a full time job and am stuck with having just 2 weeks’ vacation. My 10 year plan to freedom includes getting my debts (my new truck, trailer, and student loans) paid off and my savings built way up so I can afford to live on a few small pensions I will receive. That, and maybe some workamping here and there to supplement.
Gosh, Sarvi, your comment could’ve been written by me when I was 8 years from retirement… paying off debt and saving with a plan to live off small pensions. It all came together more smoothly and better than I planned or imagined. I wish the same for you. The freedom to live each day how you want will be absolutely delicious, Sarvi.

Hi Cynthia and Missy, ! I am feeling ok other than aches and pains that go along with birthdays. The medical problem is to do with my having had a dramatic and sudden blood pressure change with very low BP on my left side and high BP on my right side. So, because I have had some mini-strokes and triple bypass in the past, it is a concern. The had to move out two days till the 24th on final verdict! I hate to dwell on things medical.
Aaawww I miss Spike and Bridget. That Spike was always into mischief but cute. I miss those blogs where you’d describe in detail breaking or setting up camp. I was thinking I wonder if she still has trouble checking the battery packs, chocking the wheels, etc. Someone new to your blog might benefit from them…if they hadn’t gone back to read the blogs.
Hi, Rita…. What you say may very well be true. To be honest, I’d rather new readers go back and read the old posts from the beginning. They will learn the practical stuff you mention, as well as become familiar with many boondocks and campgrounds, see a lot of the country, and enjoy the antics of my original crew.

Oh! Your (our) visits to the Salton Sea are among my favorite camps. Thank you for letting us tag along! I agree…the campground with the rustic toilets offers much better views! Fewer people and rigs to cramp your style! Enjoy! Does the water level seem higher than it was your last visit?
Small, cozy, comfortable homes are better than McMansions or “or keeping up with the Joneses” in my book. It is a wonderful feeling to be content and happy with what you have, isn’t it?! A blessing indeed! 🙂

Earlier, somewhere, I wrote that I hadn’t noticed a difference in the water level of the Salton Sea from last year to this year. Since that time I’ve looked at the Sea from a few more locations and angles and it does seem that the water’s edge has receded. It’s hard for me to say how much from memory. I can say definitely that the water level hasn’t risen.
You’re right about being contented with what one has. The pursuit of “more” is part of the reason many people are unhappy. Thank you for another friendly comment. 🙂

I absolutely love your picture of the Gull in flight. Reminds me of when I was a kid and went to see Jonathan Livingston Seagull! I had no idea what was going on but I loved the birds-Ha! Even read the book but I think I was too young to understand the philosophical ideas in the book. Love the movie “The Birds” too, heh heh. Ever read the original short story by Daphne DuMaurier? A chiller! She is absolutely my favorite author of all time. I digress. Wonderful post and neat pictures. Good weather too. It was 90 degrees in some places in Texas yesterday. We had a high of about 87. Where is Winter? It did cool down a bit last night which was nice. Have a good one and take care!

The last time I was in the Salton Sea area was when I was a little girl. I remember it was a fun place to go to! My parents built an off the grid desert cabin 25 miles east of Twenty-nine Palms. It was a real treat to go to Joshua Tree too and climb on the rocks. We are near The Great Salt Lake in UT and go out to Antelope Island but only in the cool weather because of the no seeum bugs that come out when it’s warm. Are there many bugs at the Salton Sea? I don’t remember since it was such a long time ago. I really am enjoying reading about your adventures and like to watch Youtube videos of people hiking, camping and rving! We have a Casita too and name it “Brighty” after Brighty of the Grand Canyon, one of my favorite places to visit! Have a wonderful day!

What a nice surprise to hear from you again! I enjoyed reading about your memories from childhood. It sounds like you had adventurous parents who gave you wholesome and fun experiences. I’m glad my blog brought back memories of the Salton Sea, nearby Joshua Tree and the desert cabin.
Are there bugs at the Salton Sea? No, it isn’t buggy here, at least not where we are camped. I can’t speak for the entire shore of the Sea. Last night Reggie and I were out walking under the full moon and it was delightfully warm and bug-free.
