Even dogs can fly

Checkpoint on Interstate-10 at the Arizona-California border, west of Quartzsite

The Perfect Tow Vehicle with Best Little Trailer hitched behind pulls up to the checkpoint and the attendant waves us through.

After an overnight camp at Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, the crew and I are on our way to Midland Long Term Visitor Center, northwest of Blythe, California.  We purchased an LTVA permit ($180) when at Midland last November.  The permit is good until April 15.

~ ~ ~

At Smart and Final grocery in Blythe, I walk Reggie and Roger on-leash around the parking lot.

Roger twirls and hops and jerks his head first one way, then another.

Very odd.  Could he be remembering this place?  Does he know we’re near the camp where Skeeter lives?  No, can’t be . . . .

Our stock replenished, we travel the familiar road out of Blythe toward Midland.

Gee, it’s good to be back!  I hope our old campsite is vacant.  Then the boys can run free to visit their friends. . . .

We turn at the Midland LTVA sign.

There’s Del’s rig!  There’s our tree!  And no one is camped there!

I park us in the campsite, jump out, and go around to the passenger door.

Our campsite (Photo taken later)

The boys are bursting with delight, shifting their weight from side to side in squirms that insist . . .

“Let us out!”

I set them on the ground and ask, “You wanna’ see Skeeter? You wanna’ go see SKEETER?”

It takes about one second for the boys to realize where they are.  Off they go in a dash through the creosote bushes, sprinting over the gravel, flying over washes . . . .

They run so fast I can’t keep up.  While trotting after them, I zoom my camera to capture the first moments of reunion. There is such an explosion of energy and joy that my photos turn out to be a jumble of paws and fur and noses and tails . . . .

These few are the best of the lot.

Buddy and Beebee (out of frame) must have been outside already, as they’re the first ones to appear.  Right behind them comes the airborne Skeeter who is followed by chunky, little River.

~ ~ ~

The photos tell the story better than words.

~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~

A laughing Del greets me with a hug.  We watch our happy pups, catch up on each other’s “news,” and then it’s time for me and my crew to return to our campsite.  I need to put away the groceries and set up our new home.

“We’ll be back later!”

~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~

Later, as I settle into the covers, wrapped in the warmth of my sleeping crew in the security of our home, the day replays through my mind.

~ ~ ~

There are moments when time and place and purpose come together, when all is as we hoped it would be.

During those blessed moments, our spirits are lifted . . . .

And even dogs can fly.

Up at the top again! Just not quite. Back to read now! Hi Sue!

  5. Tesaje says:

From my observations, dogs do remember, especially really good things and really bad things. They are especially attuned to places . This was a sweet story.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

It was a sweet reunion. I think you’re right, Tesaje…. Dogs remember that which is important to them (and, unfortunately, the bad along with the good).

  6. Stephanie Turner OR says:

Oh my. I got teary. Just the pure joy. It’s the little things that make life so great. Btw, Toby and I celebrated our 5 year gotcha anniversary yesterday. I could not have dreamed of the joy and love he’d bring to my life. Ain’t life great!?

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Hi, Stephanie….Congratulations to you and Toby! May you enjoy many years of “joy and love” together. 🙂

  7. weather says:

Beautiful, Sue, absolutely beautiful! – the pictures you captured with your camera and created with your words in the last three sentences of this post… . I’m sighing from both my happiness about that reunion happening and how happy it made all of you, and with how much I enjoy your talents.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Thank you, weather. It’s always a pleasure to share our days with you. 🙂

    • weather says:

      Hi, Sue,
Assuming you’re still camped near Skeeter and the gang it looks like you have a warm windy day ahead. I hope recently you’ve been able to cook most meals outside, I know how much you enjoy using your griddle.

The storm that hit the northeast during the last couple of days here has passed. It’s combination of heavy snow and strong winds wreaked quite a bit of havoc. My place and those in the immediate vicinity were spared most of the problems other communities endured, thank you, Lord. They have lifted the travel bans that several surrounding counties had put in place, and power has been restored to most of those who’d been without it.

As I type there’s a bit of snow covered hail falling . I’m glad it’s a relatively soft precipitation. The trees are all sprouting their first buds of leaves and won’t lose those 🙂 . Springtime will officially begin in seventeen days, so I’m savoring what may be among the last really beautiful wintery views I’ll see during this season.

      • rvsueandcrew says:

Thank you for the wish for an outdoor-cooking day. This morning is sunny and calm, and, unless the wind arrives soon, I’ll be firing up the griddle.

Storms swirl around you and yet you come through them with aplomb, while noticing and appreciating the beauty they bring.

“snow covered hail falling” — Your description gave me a chill!

I know you will find the blessings in this day. Enjoy. How fortunate for your kitties to be warm and dry in your home.

Always a pleasure to hear from you, weather…

      • rvsueandcrew says:

Forgot to mention….. I bought a box of Celestial Seasonings Country Peach Passion herbal tea. I drink it hot and cold, but I have to be careful with the timing… The sedative power of the chamomile put me into a nice, 2-hour nap yesterday! 🙂

  10. Dawn in NC says:

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the flying dogs and the sweet reunion! I especially like the photo of Roger nuzzling next to Bebe. Thanks for the joyous post and wonderful smile! When my dog was alive, he would get excited a few miles before we would reach my parents’ house. He would start sniffing the air and dancing around. Dogs do remember!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Yes, they do remember. I was reminded of the sparrows, Jack and Jill, and their happiness when reunited.

That’s Buddy nuzzling with Roger…. although Beebee did get in on the lovefest. She ran around so much it was tough capturing her in a photo. 🙂

  11. rvsueandcrew says:

Well, the PTV is packed and we’re off to the laundromat. See y’all later!

  12. Barb from Hoquiam! says:

How fun! Recently a post has been wandering around Facebook about a couple of dogs at Pike Place Market… both goldens. They act very strange and know one another somehow… they end up figuring out they are siblings (from out of state) who remembered each other. Our own Rocky (a golden) had a girlfriend (Peaches) who lived on our street. They moved away… and Rocky always wandered up by her drive looking for her… 🙁

I needed this this morning, Sue. I needed to see the photos. I needed to be grounded by your post. Thank you always for bringing a smile.

Hugs from Hoquiam (where I am sorta drowning right now).

Sue,I am going to recommend a great drive for my fellow north south snowbirds.I drove the Natchez Trace a 444 mile parkway .It is a great drive for RV folks. No trucks allowed and speed limit set at 50mph.There is no commercial or residential properties along the entire 444 miles and has several free pull thru campsites with no hookups.

Essentially, a 444 mile drive through a park.Saw 10 cars in the opposite direction the first 100 miles.

We went from Natchez to Nashville on our way back north.

  16. bess in Oregon says:

such sweet smiling faces. i am sure your face had a huge grin too. i am happy for you all and it seems to brighten Del’s life too. bess

  17. It’s like you’ve been on a long vacation and the ‘kids’ have to go tell their friends they’re back.
I guess it’s the same with Del and you.

  18. Karen Waskow says:

    Hi Sue et al,

I just checked in at the Midland LTVA yesterday and Byron seemed to automatically ask me if I was here because of RV Sue:). Just to say what a great influence you have had on so many folks, for him to ask that way.

I just retired and literally, picked up my last pay check on the last Wednesday of January and was on the road on Friday, just landing here after visiting family down the coast of CA along the way.

I bought my rig at end of March and have had some great fun attending rallies of RV’ing Women, the Oregon Chapter (highly recommend RV’ing Women as a great way to get help and support when starting out or beyond), so far but this is really my maiden voyage doing what I intended from the start, being on my own, doing dispersed camping.

I just got Jack, a 12 year old rescue dog, in early November (Before that, it was guinea pigs, but they don’t travel well), and I could not be doing this without him:).

I know you treasure your privacy and that makes sense to me. With that said, if you are here and felt like stopping in to say “hi” (I’m not sure of your timing and such exactly where you are now), I’m in a mostly tan small coach, very rounded, large windshield, with a silver Subaru Outback behind it. Not sure how long I’ll be staying.

Lastly, just to convey my gratitude for you sharing your life with us. I have gotten so much insight and information from following along with you. It’s much appreciated.

    – karen

    • Gail from Buckeye AZ says:

Congratulations on your retirement Karen! Enjoy every minute of it!

      • karen waskow says:

Gail. Thx for the kind thought. Much still to figure out and this is a good thing:).

        • Gail from Buckeye AZ says:

Karen I too am a newbie. I bought myself a truck and trailer last June so am new to everything also. I do not full time but have taken a lot of trips and loving it! Good Luck on your adventures!

      • Denise - Richmond VA says:

Congratulations Karen and Gail!! Have fun enjoyjng your retirement! 🙂

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Karen,

Thank you for the sweet note and invitation. I hope you like it at Midland LTVA (It’s not everyone’s cup o’ tea!). I have to stick to my rule of keeping to myself. Once I start thinking, “Oh well, just this one time,” I’ll lose my resolve and then potentially I’m in a sticky situation with followers and invitations.

Please know that I appreciate you being a part of my blog.

Best wishes to you and Jack. Kudos for letting an oldster come into your home and into your heart!

      • rvsueandcrew says:

OOps! I meant to send you congratulations on retiring! Enjoy the possibilities!

      • karen waskow says:

        Hey thanks so much Sue

I totally understand and no problem at all. I’m also loving the keeping to myself thing and I’m very happy and content here as it stands.

I’m glad you’re keeping your resolve because I think it’s probably the only way that you can manage so thanks for being honest and straightforward, much appreciated.

And again just to say how valuable it is to me and all of us apparently, that you have taken the time and made yourself accessible by sharing your life and your experience.

I’m learning so much from following along. Much less about the Practical aspect and much more about the sensibility how to move around from one day to the next with a lot of attention to the present and mostly very gracefully:).

Your blog has been an invaluable resource and support for me.

        Thank you so much!

    • Krystina says:

Congratulations on your retirement and new lifestyle!!

Thanks for the order. Will you go to a concert during the farewell tour?

          • Cinandjules🌵 says:

You betcha…wouldn’t miss it for the world. Luckily he’s playing in AZ. Tickets were sold out within minutes. Would have loved to see him at Madison Square Garden in NYC…
He puts on a great show!

  21. Dasher - Tampa Bay says:

I heard some Hollywood egomaniac said we should do no ordering from Amazon today. Humph. So I just got my daughter some silver candlesticks for her 25th wedding anniversary, and an automatic waterer and some fence wire for my horse. Now I will go back and read your post and the responses to bring down my blood pressure .

    Hi Sue,

The canine reunion was just plain fun for us blogorinoes. Thanks for sharing and have a great stay at Midland.

  29. Denise - Richmond VA says:

    Hi, Sue,

I love this post so much! Happiness is coming home to a wonderful little pup who has waited ever so patiently for me to arrive. Gracie gives kisses and just about wags her tail off. I love my little girl and am so thankful that we have each other. Seeing the joy in your boys and Del’s crew says it all! I know your heart swelled with happiness and love! 💕 💕

After a very stressful few days at work, Gracie did her part to help me let it go. The fact that I found some Dove dark chocolate hearts buried in the freezer – a forgotten treat- helped as well!

Sending you, Reggie, and Roger love and hugs from me and Gracie pup! Enjoy your evening – welcome home! 🙂

For an extra dose of cuteness, go to http://www.nbc12.com/category/323135/pet-cam-ral-richmond-va to see Ginny, a stray pup who was picked up last week. She was very pregnant. This morning she gave birth to “at least 10 puppies.” Look for the live puppy cam. Instant smile guaranteed! xo

  30. Gail from Buckeye AZ says:

It made my heart Smile to read your blog today, so happy for all the little guys to be together again!

    • Julie, Molly & gizmo (Idaho) says:

I want to second that emotion. Love to see happy doggies as well as children’s laughter. Thank you Sue for your blog. Julie

      • Julie, Molly & gizmo (Idaho) says:

BTW bought wonderful star ruby grapefruit in borrego springs. If any of u are near there what a tasty delight.

  31. Peggy says:

Hey Sue! I don’t post often but this one is so eloquent that I had to say “thanks”! You have a special way with words.

  32. Diann in MT says:

Yay! You returned! The boys are so proud of their mom to have “figured it out”. They were so missing Del and his crew! All along, Mom, you knew!
Does my heart good to know you are all happy.

No need to reply. I am confident you have read this, Sue. God bless.

Also, blogorinos in the Northeast will be enduring a horrible storm over the next couple of days. Prayers are with you all.

  33. Jolene/Iowa says:

Hi Sue, What a heartwarming story! I loved the reunion pics! Now, something I don’t understand. A checkpoint between California and Arizona. Why the checkpoint between two US states? I can understand at the border of Mexico or Canada and the US states, this surprised me though.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Hi, Jolene,

It’s an agricultural checkpoint, not border patrol. A large portion of California’s economy is based on agriculture products and the import of plant diseases/fungi/pests could be devastating. Usually the person asks if you have any fruits or vegetables with you and, if you do, where you obtained them.

  34. Jolene/Iowa says:

I also have a discussion question.

Blogorino’s , I would love to hear your thoughts. Quality of life or quantity of life? What is your choice?

If you have to make the choice on something that might prolong your life but in doing so you feel you have no quality of life, what is your choice?

    • Linda not in NC says:

Quality absolutely. Quantity is just a number.

    • Cinandjules 🌵 says:

Just my opinion..and I apologize if I offend someone.

Both Jules and I believe in quality instead of quantity. Without quality you are just existing….which isn’t our cup of tea.

IMHO-when someone (Dr) says quantity…well how much is quantity? A week, month? How can they predict that? They are waving that carrot and lining their pockets at the same time…false hopes with the same result. Quantity which usually has a side effect of being miserable. No thanks!

It’s a personal choice…with no right or wrong answer.

    • Dawn in NC 🐈 says:

Definitely quality of life! I guide my fur babies lives by this motto as well. As a child who may have to make these choices for my parents. I pick a better quality of life.

    • Denise -Richmond VA says:

      Hi, Jolene,

Quality for sure…quantity means nothing if one is worse off from the treatment (my opinion.)

    • Rochelle in IN says:

Another vote for quality. Check out the story behind “Driving Miss Norma”. She went with quality and thoroughly enjoyed herself. For blogorinos who like to read, the book is excellent!

    • Jolene/Iowa says:

We are in this situation with Rick right now. Because of his heart attack and damage done to his heart, he is borderline to needing an internal defibrillator placed.

If he gets it he loses his ability to do the only job he has ever done because he can’t use any vibrating tools. He loses the ability to use a chain saw even to just cut up small limbs for a wood burner. He can’t use his table saw for crafting which he enjoys.

He has not had any problems while wearing an external life vest the past 7 months and I just can’t blame him for not wanting lose everything that is important for him living quality of life on his terms. He may or may not have another heart attack but he will live the rest of his life depressed if he can’t do even the simple things he enjoys doing. He says, why live if I can’t do anything.

      • Cinandjules🌵 says:

Tough position….with all due respect…whatever choice Rick makes.

It makes it “easier” if you both have the same beliefs. Whatever the decision, remember you have your injury and you need to take care of yourself also.

        • Jolene/Iowa says:

Absolutely, it has to be Rick’s choice. Yes, my head is still slowly healing but I also have a chronic bladder condition called Interstitial Cystitis that I have had for over 40 years now. I have managed because I have not had to work much because I visit the bathroom many times a day and even more when under stress. On bad days it is not unusual for me to be in the bathroom every 10 minutes. Some days I am in so much pain from that disease.. Rick and I both turn 60 within this next month. For reasons I can’t get into we have had no assistance from anything during the times when he couldn’t work and it is slow going right now. So I am hoping things turn around soon. We are a slowly sinking ship here.

          • sandi says:

Dear Jolene, I will choose quality if I have a choice. Hubs had another heart attack 6 years ago. We have learned to adapt to the new quality. It has taken some ruff turns and I had a breakdown from exhaustion and overwhelm. My trailer waits. We made it put 3 times last summer, both of us for 10 days and me alone twice. Life is good. Just different now. Hang in there and take care of you first. That’s what I learned. Both of you. Blessings

      • Denise - Richmond VA says:

I am sorry that you and Rick have to make such a tough decision. Whatever you all decide, please know that you both continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. Take good care of yourself, Jolene. **hugs**

      • Diann in MT says:

Jolene. You are one of my favorite blogorinos because you live in Iowa (if I recall correctly), and my granddaughter lives in Ft. Madison. So, there you go.
I am sorry that you and your hubby are in a bad place right now. It’s tough. I cannot imagine. You are probably going to get a lot of advice from concerned blogorinos. Just keep an open mind. Perhaps, one idea might be workable. Keep the faith. As most Iowans do.
Pardon me for my 2 cents worth, but if it were me, I would sell out and go on the road, for as long as possible. Taking a look at your products, they seem amazing. I am going to purchase something. It seems like a business you could take with you.
        God bless.

        • Jolene/Iowa says:

Diann, thank you. yes, I am from Iowa. I live in southwest IA. We can’t sell out. Our house isn’t worth much at all and our truck and camper are old and it is just not feasible option. We also have to be close to Drs. and I won’t leave my mom now as she is getting older. Diann, on my website there is information about me. If you find my email address you can email me and I can answer more questions and also if you are on FB I can put you in a group I have that has lots of information. God bless you as well!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

      Message to readers:

You can encourage Jolene and Rick during this difficult time by making your CBD purchases at this Hempworx website. Thank you.

      • Diann in MT says:

Maybe, Sue, you could keep this post up a bit longer so most blogorinos may see it. Thanks.

      • Jolene/Iowa says:

Thank you so much Sue. I would never have asked you to do that. These products are changing peoples lives and funny thing, I just mentioned your blog today in my 44K plus Facebook group when I did a Facebook Live today in that group so you may get some new blogorinoes too!

Anyone can find my email address on that website and I can plug you into a Facebook group for lots more information if you email me. God bless you all and I have faith we will get through this but it sure has been a rough year.

Your post with the wild, unbridled joy of the boys as they reunite with their friends was most cheering as I am under the weather with some flu thing. I love to see such happiness and love!

I hope you are happy to be back at Midland, too.

It would be way too hot for me at this time.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

And I’m looking forward to it becoming warmer! 🙂

Hi, ValGal…. I hope you soon get over that “bug.” Take good care of yourself.

    • Denise -Richmond VA says:

Feel better soon, ValGal. I had that mess a couple weeks ago – not fun. Get plenty of rest and try to stay hydrated.

  44. Kat and Cookie dog from NY says:

    Dogs remember their friends!
    I guess that’s why I Love Dogs.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

I’m with you, Joel. Dogs are good people when people are dogs. That sentence actually makes sense in a weird way. Ha!

  46. Li says:

Wonderful post. Such a happy and satisfying reunion. Very glad for all concerned and sweet dreams to pups and peoples.

  47. Wendy - Thailand says:

Just a beautiful post in so many ways. Thank you bringing joy to so many people around the world, you are an earth angel.

Oh they all look so happy! How fun is that!?! I bet it felt great to give them that surprise.

  49. Laurie in NC says:

Loved seeing the joy of the reunion! It has really made me think about our one dog household. We have had at least 3 dogs for many years until recently. We spend a lot of time playing with our Lucy, but I wonder if she is lonely for canine companionship?
Seeing Reggie and Roger together and then with Del’s pups has really made me think that we should look for another family member. Thanks for the wonderful post!

  50. Krystina says:

This post made my face smile 🙂

On my “Maiden” shake-down trip with my kitty Luvy. He is having a blast…and so am I.
The RV, a 2014 29′ Thor Windsport 27K. The toad, a 2016 Chevy Colorado 4WD. Both low mileage so lots of good years of adventures ahead!
    Bucket lists, here I come.

  53. AZ JIM says:

Looking at the reunion photos again this morning and all the fur kids are clearly bearing broad grins!! It is a great day for them all and us as well. Thanks again Missy…

  54. Hoot says:

This post was like comfort food for the soul. This line, “There are moments when time and place and purpose come together, when all is as we hoped it would be.” made me feel secure in the moment. Glad you made it out of the wind and off the interstate. Thanks for sharing!

  62. Mary Batt says:

Almost choked up- -but fought it off when I saw, read about and ‘knew’ the pups meet and greet with their buds. I could feel the “Pup-Joy”. I am still smiling inside and out. I will pick up my “part-time” lab Maggie in a few weeks for an almost 3 week visit. That will be Maggies and my joy and vacation. We have been busy with life for months but are slowing down. (at least I PLAN/HOPE to take it slower!) Then we will camp to the Smokies and up through PA, NY, to Maine and back to Smokies and Louisiana for several weeks. slowly? Thanks again for your composition. still smiling
