I don’t want to drive on no stinkin’ interstate today! It’s too much fun rolling across the desert. Set my own pace.
We’ll go over the New York Mountains to Searchlight!
“Good plan, eh, Reg?”
Before reaching the mountains, we come upon an oasis.
A few buildings huddle in a grove of cottonwoods. There’s a trading post with a cafe with vehicles lined up in front. A “historical hotel” sits behind the cafe. Lots of vacancies at the RV park.
“See the rail, Reggie? That’s where the cowboys hitched their horses so they wouldn’t run away. Kinda’ like your tether.”
Fun Fact!
In January of 2016 Nipton (population: 6) was put up for sale. Asking price: $5,000,000. I don’t know if the town is still available for purchase.
Another Fun Fact!
A Nevada husband and father of four bought a MEGA Millions ticket in Nipton and won $446,292. A California ticket holder won $188 million in January of this year.
The Nipton Road (Route 164) slices through the land of creosote bushes.
The drive over the mountains is easy. There’s hardly any traffic today.
As we go over the mountains and across the desert on the east side, I look for potential boondocks. Not for tonight, but possibly in the future. Searchlight is on a common route for going north to south or vice versa.
A few miles before town we come upon a couple of large, flat spots along the road.
I park in one.
Reggie is such a good traveler. He deserves another walk-about. Hmm. . . This site is large enough that one wouldn’t have to camp right up along the road. Probably very little traffic at night, even less than now.
I should remember this place. I’d rather camp here than in the hustle, bustle, and noise of Searchlight. Good for an overnight stop in cooler weather.
In town I stop for gas.
It takes a few moments for my ears, eyes, and brain to adjust to this environment!
RVs are parked behind Terrible’s while their owners take advantage of the laundromat and showers.
Up the street we pull into a casino parking lot.
I want to go online and research a few places to camp — Cottonwood Campground and boondocking at El Dorado Canyon, among others.
Well, it all comes down to . . . where do we go to be comfortable in this heat wave? These places are unappealing today. I don’t want to stay in an RV park. If we had some shade, we’d be fine.

Since I won’t be hanging out in the casino, I’d rather not stay here!
Shade, shade, where can we find shade?
I study the Benchmark atlas page lying open on my lap.
Gee, we could be at Las Vegas in an hour. . . . I know where there are shady camps! The campgrounds at Lake Mead!
With jazz playing on the PTV’s tinny radio and air rushing through my open window, we shoot up Route 95 and turn east on Route 93 to Boulder City.
This time we’ll camp at Boulder Beach, rather than at Las Vegas Bay Campground.
Ooh, there’s that beautiful blue!
At the entrance to Lake Mead Recreation Area I show the guy in the booth my interagency senior discount card, as well as my ID.
He returns my items and remarks pleasantly, “Enjoy your visit!”
I drive through all the loops at Boulder Beach Campground.
Now I remember why we’ve never camped here. I don’t want to look at RVs all around us, let alone listen to their generators. . . . or their kids screaming. What’s the point of that? Sheesh, this is getting on my nerves . . .
The PTV heads for the exit.
My jaws are clenched so tight I fear I’ll break a tooth!
A few minutes later . . . .
Ahh, good ol’ Las Vegas Bay Campground . . . .
I tuck the Best Little Trailer into the shade of cottonwoods and oleander at a campsite in the No Generators section, allowing the Perfect Tow Vehicle and her solar panel to bask in the bright sunshine.

To what place are you referring? At Las Vegas Bay you can stay up to a month. The daily rate is $20 regular/$10 with senior discount. Nope, no weekly or monthly rates.
Wow what timing….I just finished an article in Sunset magazine about Nipton. I had never heard of it…probably zoomed by it half a dozen times going to visit sister in Pahrump and niece in Boulder City. In the article was a description of the hotel and pictures too. Your story about Clara bow adds to the story…what fun to learn about new places. I looked at the weather forecast for the next week…get ready for a roller coaster ride…up and down with heat and cool weather. Love your camp site.

I looked at some websites about Nipton and, to be honest, the photos of the hotel and surroundings must be old because it isn’t quite as “polished” as the pics display. I wouldn’t mind staying overnight in Nipton, eat in the cafe, wander around. I read that some hotel visitors complain about the train whistle at night. Pffftt! It’s the West… There are trains!
Yeah, the temps are supposed to drop significantly tomorrow. That’s why we’re breaking camp today — I don’t need the shade. Have a great day, Rita!

I’d keep the BLT and the PTV. Buy a large tract of land so I wouldn’t be bothered and put a one-room cabin on it.
I almost cried sentimental tears to read that you would not get rid of BLT/PTV. WE love them, too! You must have seen the Tiny House movement online. Wheel one a dem t’ings onto your land and you still have another $400,,000 to build our “Blogorino Guesthouse”!!!!
Aww.. beach boomer… You love the BLT/PTV, too. The way I see it… I love what I have, so why try to obtain something “better” just because there’s money to spend?
Well, about that $400,000. That goes for a very large tract of land for the Tiny House or one-room cabin to be put in the middle.

I was thinking of the contrast in pics. A post or so ago you were in the middle of nowhere, not a car or person in sight. That looked lonesome to me. In these you see a passle of cars and people and these looks exhausting. LOL Is there a middle ground? I also loved the last photo – rug and chair out. Looks very inviting.

It was a sensory shock coming from the stillness and quiet of desert to the sounds and activity of Searchlight.
What seems lonesome to you and others, looks absolutely marvelous to me. The style of one’s RVing is personal. We each find what we like. That’s the beauty of it.

That’s by far he most creosote bushes I’ve ever seen in one place, wow, entire fields of them. “Ah, good ol’ Las Vegas Bay Campground…” made me smile, that place has been really good to you during the times you’ve been there before 🙂 . Not to make light of your tension, but you clenching your jaws tightly made me grin. I tend to do that in situations that strongly bother me, too.
Thanks for the glimpses of Nipton and Searchlight, interesting bits of history, news and links, I love that stuff! The man that won the lottery needed to stay with family and friends for a while when money was tight. Nice when a family that really needs it has good fortune come their way.
Your listening to jazz on the radio intrigued me. For many years jazz/blues music was a big part of my life. DID YOU KNOW? John Mayall had an album named jazz/blues fusion? It was among my favorites when my son was a baby. When he was 7 months old I said aloud “Hm,m , what shall I play?” He pointed and said some of his first words. John Mayall!

I got my email today!!! I love this camp. It is too bad you are already gone by now. It just looked inviting. We had a great time in Toronto week before last. It was cold and snowy though. We saw Niagara Falls and Chinatown and Lake Huron. The landscape looked a lot like home except we don’t get that much snow at home. It is getting hot here also. It is in 80’s today, but there is a cooler breeze so it is very comfortable. Someday I may get to retire is Medicare doesn’t get screwed up. It would be wonderful to be able to enjoy this weather. I can’t wait to see where we are next. Be safe.

Please understand the rest of this reply is not directed to you, I would just like to take this opportunity to explain what I wonder about when she feels she has to change from posting about the present .
In years past, like most of us, her life was one preparing for the future- for herself, child, grandchildren, students, etc. Having done that our reward should now be a life of being able to enjoy each day by living in the moment, which is well known as being key to real happiness.
Instead, to avoid those too selfish to leave her alone in her personal real life she should change her blogging style and revert to living in the past?! That’s a hideous choice for her to have to live with in my opinion. I am not referring to our pleasure in reading her posts, she, in all circumstances, always makes that a wonderful experience for us. I’m talking about what it’s like for her to live that way.
It seems high time to stop giving intruders the benefit of the doubt and other ways of being kind to them.To those of you who have arranged “chance encounters” that you obviously plotted in advance or dropped in knowing full well Sue didn’t want you to-
Surprised and unprepared in those moments, Sue automatically falls into her gracious and kind nature. You may think because she spoke pleasantly with you that she enjoyed meeting you and even thinks you’re nice. I strongly doubt that. Likely she considers you , as I do, self centered persons that demand your own satisfaction at another’s expense, with no regard to their needs or how you are damaging their life.Were I in her place in those situations you would receive the disdain and cold , harsh treatment that your totally unacceptable behavior makes you deserve.

Searchlight is not a very peaceful place! The noise, the rude people pushing and shoving, etc, is just not my idea of fun! Nipton sounds very interesting. How far from Searchlight is Nipton?

At the road sign… Searchlight was 29 miles away and Nipton was 7 miles away, so that means the distance between Searchlight and Nipton is 22 miles. Can you tell I taught math? 🙂

Update on AO…..she pouting as Uncle Frannie left this morning. He was able to get her to the second landing in the pool! He’s headed back to NY soon, so AO wont see him until this winter. She made him cry as he drove away…lying on the garage floor with her head between her paws and her sad eyes!

How do I remember the good spots? I have this blog. You’ll notice that I’ve described the location of those spots along Nipton Road. If I should forget where they are, which I doubt I will, all I have to do is a websearch for “RVSue + Nipton” and this post will come up.
No, I don’t mark up my Benchmarks. Silly thing — When I was a kid, writing in books was a serious crime. To this day I can’t bring myself to write on books,not even maps, and not even those I own. Just like talking on the phone. I was taught the phone is for essential business, not for recreational chatting. I think that’s why I hardly ever use my phone and when someone calls me I can hardly wait to hang up. 🙂

Sue, I so get that thing about not writing in books! It was so hard to get to college and learn most marked up books. I am horrified with the current “craft” of journalist IN Bibles. My Mother was a teacher and I learned to value and care for books basically at birth and still have mt very first cloth book and it’s in good condition.

Afternoon Sue and little Reg-meister. It was nice to see you found a shady spot finally, and a quiet one at that. Funny to me (I haven’t been there) that you found shade near LV, and not Lake Mead beforehand. What do I know? (But I’m fast learning!)
I’m trying to sell, and give away stuff as fast as I can with nervous trepidation. It’s an odd feeling getting rid of all our “stuff”. My hope chest, is a beautiful, hand carved cedar chest, carved 360. My dad had a nice thick glass topper made for it long ago… And I mean LONG! (70’s). That chest moved from Hawaii with me to PA. Then from PA to LA. Then from LA to Kauai, Hawaii. Then to Oahu, Hawaii. Then to Troutdale, OR, and now resides with me in Vancouver, WA. Now I am giving it away. At least she’s going to a good home, where she will be enjoyed and cared for; a dear Friend is “inheriting” it. I’ll get to visit it when I make it back this way to visit friends in the Summer time. That gives me comfort. Yes, it’s hard parting with special things for sure.
I’ve been reading about your travels from day 1, as you know. I re-read some of the beginning days again, (maybe a 3rd time?), to get a feel for that very first week after you picked up the BLT in Rice. Knowing what you know, would you have done anything different in that first week of BLT ownership? Anything you care to share, that is? I keep wondering how that week is going to go for us, and the learning curve. Do you have any words of wisdom that might save us a bucket of grief? I mean, sometimes those baby steps can be painful. I will say, the way we have our plans made, we’d be picking up the little egg, sometime in July. It will be HOT! One hot mama compared to living in the PNW, and I’ve learned that since leaving Hawaii, I don’t do heat well. Perhaps we should suck it up and do campgrounds with hookups so we can run AC until we get back to higher, shadier ground? The thing I guess I’m concerned about are those nasty “reservations” one must make in the prime months. Ugh. So, tell me dear Sue; have any ideas?
Looking back at what I wrote, I guess there’s two Q’s; 1. That first week and anything you might have done differently? And 2, escaping the heat, and hooking up to run the AC?

I sure appreciate all I’ve learned from your blog so far, and I know many of your other readers do too! You are quite generous with sharing! One more thing – I love the doggie mom that you are. “Would you have done anything different in that first week of BLT ownership?” I gave this a lot of thought. The only thing I can come up with is the camps I chose as we hurried our way across Texas and into New Mexico during the extreme heat of August. To do it over again, I would’ve gone to RVparks, hooked up to electric, and turned on the air conditioner.
Of course, that’s knowing what I know now. At the time I had very little idea how much this lifestyle would cost and so I was very tight with my money. Also I was coming off of 7 years of penny-pinching in order to set myself up for full-timing. It took a while to relax enough to spend for a/c.
If you plan a route that doesn’t go to all the typical tourist spots you probably could find openings at private RV parks. Do that to get out of a low elevation, hot area. Start your day’s drive early in the morning, quit by one o’clock, avoid state parks, and your chances of securing a site without a reservation and with hook-ups increases. The road less traveled may be longer, but there is less competition for campsites.
Do you have any words of wisdom that might save us a bucket of grief?
No, I don’t, not really. Maybe other blogorinos can share ideas. All I have to offer is what I’ve written in this blog… and I include the ups and the downs.
Probably the biggest mistakes I see people make are 1) Driving too fast and 2) Driving late in the day. Don’t do those two things and you avoid a load of grief.

Thank you for this excellent advice, Sue. Especially the one about “don’t drive late in the day” …. I learned my lesson about that. I posted in another entry about how I found a creepy abandoned campsite and stayed only because it was late and I was beat.
Never will I do that again. I’ll get on the road at first light, make arrangements in advance, and stop at 1 like you said.
BTW, your first paragraph tells me I wasn’t clear. The campground I chose — Las Vegas Bay Campground — isn’t at Las Vegas, it’s part of Lake Mead Recreation Area. The bay no longer exists because of the low water level.
I think this was our 4th visit at that campground.

So glad you had a chance to cool off and relax! Nipton sounds like my kind of town! I would love to explore there, it reminds me of our little ghost town of Chloride NM! Chuck and I explored every dirt road around there and we loved it! And yeah… I woulda bought a few lottery tickets in Nipton! I have fond memories of that day we went to Chloride, walked around the town, browsed the gift shop, took photos, and sat at the picnic table — you, Chuck, EmilyO and me.
I kind of wished I had stopped at Nipton for an overnight. I guess I was in a traveling mood, plus the RV park — from what I could see — didn’t look “in business.” Maybe I would’ve found out otherwise if I had investigated. If I go that way again, I will!

I love your final campground choice! I have found as I get older, I just want peace and quiet. When the kids were small we went to the family type campgrounds with fun stuff for kids. I enjoyed that then, but steer very clear of those types of campgrounds now. We love going to State Park and National Park campgrounds!

When my power is down, sites load very slowly and photos don’t appear well, usually just an ID number. You’ve probably cleared your cache. I have no idea why that happens. Darn, I want you to see my blog the way I intend it to look!

Hi Sue! It was a big week-end for me. My “last horse” left for northern VA to be close to his mom on Sunday. A step that makes all of this very real. I will stay on the farm until the first of July when the owner moves back full-time. Then? Don’t know. So many things still hinge on someone else. But I plan to be heading west by Sept.
One of the “someone elses” is an uncle who will be going with me. My plan is to get him a small travel trailer and set him up in a park. He can come and go from there. He has needs that I do not have. But he loves that area as much as I. I was wondering if any of your readers has had any experience with Tradewinds RV Park in Golden Valley, AZ? It seems to be a less fancy park but still has the important things. My uncle would not be comfortable in one of the really high end parks even if I could afford it….which I can’t. If someone even has experience with the area in general, that would be nice to hear as well. Thanks!

It’s very hard to choose an RV park, sight unseen, especially when not interested in the expensive “resort” type. I don’t know anything about Tradewinds.
Is it important that your uncle be situated in Golden Valley?
No, not really. Just looking in that general area at an elevation that wouldn’t freeze a lot. I would expect him to be making lots of short trips into the “red rock country” that he loves. But he would feel better knowing he had a doctor, grocery stores and pharmacy that he “knows and is known”. The park has laundry. He would have water, electric and sewage…..plus free wifi. Nice, since he is currently using part of my data. He is a good man who worked hard all his life…..but he could not afford rent without me. Nor could he afford to keep my house (Left to me by my parents….where he lives now). Soooo we are going to try it this way. It would be nice if it was just easy now and then. 🙂 But, it will all work out.
I stayed at the Terribles in Searchlight for a couple days while heading South earlier in the month. Nice people there. The casino is super stinky from stale cigarette smoke though, and the laundry facility is apparently permanently closed. They do have showers available, though.

I am a little late to the party, but really wanted to add my two cents worth on Sue’s request for no visitors etc – there are always people that truly believe “It doesn’t mean me!” Always people who think they will just pop in for a minute because, really, she doesn’t mean ME! There are a lot of us that love following your adventures, and I would bet there are a lot of us that would love to just drop in for a minute and meet Sue and Reggie in person! However, most of us RESPECT Sue’s wish for privacy and no visitors!
As for me, I am way too social and couldn’t handle the solitude. But I absolutely respect Sue’s request for no visitors!
