Home in the desert; then and now

RVSue and her canine crew left the full-time RVing life in spring of 2018, moving into a house in southeastern Arizona.  This blog continues their story.

A hot summer with little rain dried up our yard. That’s Roger, the once homeless dog who has become The Master of His Domain.

~ ~ ~

The Best Little Trailer needs attention.

Neglected for a year, she sits patiently under the mesquite where she has borne up admirably against snowstorms and heatwaves.  Cobwebs cling to her tires and mold defaces her once pristine and glowing fiberglass roof.

Mesquite pods have wiggled their way under the awning. Oh, the shame!

Grass and weeds tickle the BLT’s belly.  Sheesh . . . No respect for her distinguished service providing a secure home in wild places across the western states!

Cooler days give me incentive.

It’s high time I did something about this travesty!

Inserting the key into the hitchlock, memories of our old boondocking days are released.

Heightened awareness . . . The sound of the river rolling and tumbling past, the smell of sage, the early morning freshness and light, the happy anticipation, a slight undercurrent of nervousness . . . .  “C’mon, crew!  Take your places!  We’re off to a new camp!”

The lounger remains in the back yard, a reminder of peaceful relaxation enjoyed in remote places during our 7+ years of full-timing.

I soon find that hitching up is like riding a bike.

All goes easily and quickly, my confidence intact.  I only move the BLT a few lengths forward to get her out from under the mesquite and within reach of the water hose for cleaning.

Summer comes to an end with the raking of mesquite  pods. Reggie, The Sensitive One, keeps by me, not because he’s afraid, but because he needs to know that I’m okay and, thus, so is he.

I’m very glad I invested in a taller ladder!

The vent cover and power cord compartment door could use some white paint for plastic.

~ ~ ~

The house gets a fresh coat of white paint!

I knew it needed painting but it wasn’t until the new paint (“White Velvet”) goes on that I realize how yellowed and dirty the house was.  The painting crew and I decide against spraying the paint.  A roller works well.

Now you know what I did during my absence from this blog: supervising (aka getting in the way of) the paint crew.   Once the white is on, I paint the trim around the windows glossy black.  The contrast is lovely.

~ ~ ~

This and that

The crew and I take the PTV to places for our walks.  Our neighborhood is not ideal for walking dogs, although plenty of folks do it, judging by the many passers-by.  This is a dog-friendly neighborhood which means dogs in yards.  Oh, do they bark as we walk by.

I like quiet walks.  Hence, the boys and I go out into the desert.  Here’s Reggie and Roger leading me down a dirt, gas-line road.

Does this pic bring back desert memories shared on this blog?

I’m especially careful about rattlesnakes.  A few have been sighted in the area, although I haven’t seen any.  I learned when living in Georgia that if one is going to encounter a snake it most likely will happen in March or September.

I don’t know if that holds true in southeastern Arizona, but folks who live on the fringes of the neighborhood have seen a few during the past week.  I’m told it’s uncommon for them (the rattlers) to be seen within the neighborhood (none for years).

At last, rain!  We had a couple steady rains this past week.  Nothing like the deluges of last summer, but I’m thankful for what we got.   After the long dry spell, Reg, Rog, and I race out to the front porch to watch and listen to the shower and to smell that peculiar, wet-desert aroma.

What a tease.

A rabbit sneaks into our yard.  He digs his way under the privacy fence, and, when the boys sprint after him, he wiggles out through the opening in a flash.  I put the dirt back and he digs it away again.

I don’t know why he flirts with danger.  The weeds aren’t any greener on this side of the fence.  They’re actually browner.  Maybe he likes the game of being chased.

Cute little guy.  Sometimes he sits on the other side of the chain link fence while Reggie and Roger throw a fit.

Reggie is beginning to ignore the rabbit.  Roger hasn’t caught on to the “game” yet or maybe it’s a matter of not being able to override his canine instinct.

Still rocking the 20th century . . . A couple weeks ago I search the thrift stores for a VCR/VHS player.  No luck.  I can’t find one online either.  Everyone long ago switched to DVDs.

Why do I want a VHS?  Because the thrift stores have huge collections of VHS tapes, ten for a dollar, sometimes twenty for a dollar.  Beats the heck out of the price of new DVDs and I don’t want to do Netflix.

Anyway . . . .

I ask the thrift store volunteers to be on the look-out.  At last one comes in, but it doesn’t work.  The volunteer man tells me it probably needs a new belt.

“Go down to the hardware store and get a belt,” he says.  “They don’t cost much and they’re easy to put in.”

I laugh at this suggestion.  “Yeah, easy for you.  I’d go to the trouble and end up frustrated and mad with the player all in pieces.”  I add jokingly, “I know!  How ’bout YOU go down to the hardware store and . . . . ”

I was only kidding, but the next time I’m at the shop, he hands me the player which he has fixed for me!  Five dollars for the player, a dollar for ten movies, and I’m all set.

Reg and Rog are happy about this afternoon movie routine.  They get in position on the loveseat, one on each side of me knowing I’ll pet them simultaneously as they fall asleep for afternoon nap.

Did I tell you the bathroom repair is done?  Dennis and his men did an excellent job replacing the leaking pipe, ripping out the moldy drywall and installing new, then applying the textured “mud” finish.

I paint the entire room with KILZ sealer and white paint.  I like a white bathroom with only a few touches of color.   Fresh and bright.

Thrift store: Shelf with bar for towels, $2.   Cute little clock, 25 cents . . . I came across the clock shortly after I bought the towels.  Well, being that color, it had to come home!

I get a smile out of Dennis when I thank him for my “new” bathroom, chortling, “The bathroom is my new favorite room in the house!”

~ ~ ~

A plan begins to take shape.

As many of you know, I’m trying to figure out where to focus my energies going forward.

Besides fixing up and maintaining our house and yard, that is.

The crew and I are no longer full-time travelers.  This blog, as well as blogging in general, has changed.  I have changed. I don’t have the enthusiasm for journal writing as I had when we were camping and moving around the western states.

A vision of a vehicle for my writing is forming that may answer the question . . .

“If not blogging, what?”

Actually it’s something I wanted to do several years ago, but due to the time, effort, focus, perseverance, and resources required, I shelved the idea.  At that time most of the seven days in every week — and most of myself for that matter — were consumed with teaching and family responsibilities.

Over the years readers appearing with comments (God bless you!) have helped me immensely with their feedback.  From your responses to posts I learned that many of you enjoyed reading about interesting people the crew and I encountered while on the road.  Maybe I could build on that.

I don’t want to go into detail right now.  Not trying to be coy. I’m easily paralyzed by the expectations of others.  I’ll “test the waters” this fall and let you know if anything comes of it.

~ ~ ~

Well, dang.  This is a long post.  If you have read every word all the way to this point, I thank you!  Thanks also to those who share in the comment section.  I do appreciate you and enjoy the warmth of your interactions.

RVSUE RECOMMENDS . . .

Like Mexican cuisine?  Or just like bright, cheerful colors on your table?  I ordered these placemats from Amazon and what fun when they arrived!  I’ve been enjoying them ever since.

Salsa Stripe Hand Knotted Fringe Placemats

Besides the fun colors, I like how the placemats spot-clean easily.  Cloth napkins in the same “salsa stripe” are also available.

NEED A HAT?

Under a previous post a reader recommended Frogg Toggs rain gear. Subsequently someone ordered the boonie hat, so I went to Amazon to learn more about it. Whether Amazon customers used the hat for protection against rain or sun, over 670 rated it highly, averaging 4.5 stars.  And the hat is not expensive.  I like that!

Yay, a post from Sue! Now to read……

    Aloha Sue! Wow!!

I’ll be back with my 2 cents… ha!

  3. ReneeG from Idaho says:

What a wonderful post and yes, I read all the way to the end. Bless you and I hope you find that niche.

  4. Reine in Princeton, TX (when not camping) says:

Great to read a blog again but please don’t feel guilty about not blogging. It’s your blog so write when you feel like it.

  5. Janet says:

What a great update. This life is a long journey if we are fortunate so we can change our direction and draw upon our spirit to engage in new things. It takes courage to put oneself “out there” and you have been extraordinarily successful. We have enjoyed your travels on the road and we will enjoy your nest steps. It is the combination of your views of the sites you have seen but mostly how you have written about them that has drawn us into your lair. Thank you, Sue. Looking forward to ……….

    Sincerely, Janet

  6. Dawn in NC says:

Hi Sue! It’s great to hear from you.

I hear you about things and people changing what we want and enjoy over time. I believe that there are seasons to all things. While I would be sad to see you and the Blogorinos fade away, you have to do what is right for you in your season.

I ordered a kitten and butterfly umbrella through you from Amazon last month. I lost my last umbrella, and it was looking quite disreputable. I really wanted a pretty umbrella! She came after Dorian, but that’s OK. I love it! She, yes she, is pretty! I haven’t needed to use her yet, but now I’m ready. Many of the umbrellas had patterns on the inside, where only the user would see them. What fun is that, I ask you?

I also was stretching my comfort zone and ordered vegan bacon bits. Unfortunately, I wasn’t so happy with those. I don’t eat pork anymore (long story), but I do miss bacon. Oh, well. Fake bacon just doesn’t taste right. I’ve been cooking more recently and have been trying out more vegetarian and vegan recipes. I’m still pretty picky about what I like to eat, but I don’t like the habit I learned growing up of basing meals around a meat.

I was at an hundred year old General Store over the weekend and got a new 12 inch cast iron skillet from Lodge. I’m going to have to go back and look at one of your former blogs. I remember you having a discussion about how best to care for them. OK, that’s it for me right now.

    • MB from VA says:

      Hi Dawn!

I tried to leave a message before and it didn’t seem to go through…so if two happen to show up, you’ll know why. 😉

Don’t you just love places like the general store? I think it would be fun to write a blog about places like that. Like the little store Sue used to frequent….The Why Not. I want to go there some day. And there used to be a tiny place on 89 when I headed north out of the Grand Canyon toward Utah. The first time I found it, I had been driving for some time and it was HOT! Then there it was….a little unassuming building with its snacks and COLD drinks! I’m sure there are places like that everywhere.

And good for you for trying to eat healthier. Me too. Some days are easier than others! LOL!

And my uncle was let go today by his orthopedic doc….after months of wound care and a surgery. Maybe “one step” closer to regaining some independence. fingers crossed.

      Have a good evening!

        Hi, MB,

Is the little store Jacob Lake Inn & Country Store just outside of the GC North Rim? Cute place! Great homemade cookies! 😊

        • MB from VA says:

Hi Denise! I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the little place. But, I don’t think it had the word “Lake” in it. This place was on a canyon floor…..no water of any kind around. This was many years ago so it may have grown up around it or be gone altogether. I sure hope not. I loved that place!

          • Denise - Richmond VA says:

            Hi, MB!

Definitely a different little country store. The Jacob Lake Country store has one gas pump out front. I was blessed to be in that area in 2011. Things change, but I hope that are still in business. It is a small mom & pop operation.

            Have a great weekend!

And by the way….it is ok to talk about your hopes and dreams for future travel even if it is not in your near future. Sometimes just talking about an idea can help make it happen. 😊

      • Dawn in NC says:

Yes, I love old general stores that have been around forever. I believe that this one still had a functioning post office mailboxes. So glad to hear about your uncle’s progress! It’s a wonderful thing when specialists are no longer needed.

I understand about now wanting to comment anymore about the state of staying or going. Still love to hear from you, however. Don’t know about you, but I am really looking forward to relaxing this weekend. The only plans I have are to have brunch with a friend and to make a semi-vegetarian Spanish Paella. (Vegetarian, but may add shrimp). 5 PM can’t get here fast enough!

      • Denise - Richmond VA says:

        Hi again, MB,

Glad to hear that your uncle is on the mend!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Hi, Dawn! Thank you for the umbrella order! I remember seeing it a while back. Cute! I’m glad you’re happy with it. 🙂

    • Denise - Richmond VA says:

Speaking of country stores, has anyone visited The Vermont Country Store? They are a family run business. I get their catalog in the mail; is a pleasure to window shop. They carry some hard to find items. I would love visit and slowly roam up and down the isles….and then make at least another loop, to make sure I did not miss anything!! 😊

Krystina, is the VCS in your neck of the woods? I hop you are doing well! 😊

    • Elizabeth says:

You are right about most all the “fake” bacon…however, we have found eating some of the Costco brand uncured turkey bacon to be the best one out there!! Here and there we find some good alternatives…we cannot eat pork and a great host of other foods either…though to look at us you would not dream that so!! ARGH!!

    Hi Sue. First today?

  8. Nancy in california says:

What a very pleasant suprise to see your post! Hi Sue and crew!! Thought maybe we might not hear from you again, and that was gonna have to be okay. Everyone changes, a little, sometimes alot..
I hope you write a book! Oops, I said it. Full of photos from your adventures
So very glad you and Reg and Rog are thriving and enjoying your lives and home.
Happy to see the BLT shiny and hopeful again..
You made my day with this post…Thank you!

  9. Rats the blue fog tog hat is unavailable!! I have a blue rain poncho that needs a hat to go with it. Been looking for water proof hat. I’ll keep checking back.

    • Columbus Calvin says:

Hi, Rita! I clicked on the link a few minutes ago and it went right to the hat. You might want to try again. It’s a great hat!

  10. Texas Sue says:

Hi Sue, your comment “frozen by the expectations of others “ is exactly what I’ve experienced all my life and never knew how to word it! Thanks! Don’t have a clue why, maybe I think people expect me to be perfect? A mystery
Glad you’re enjoying your home, it sounds wonderful. Thanks for sharing with us. Hugs to you and the boys!

    • MB from VA says:

      Hi Texas Sue,

Same here. I’m trying to figure out how to get out of that cycle and the guilt and false sense of responsibility that goes with it. And I will. And this reminds me of another “RVSUE” quote from 2015. I had it written in my “Quotes & Inspirations” book…..”It seems that I’ve lost the ability to do stuff I don’t want to do after a lifetime of doing what other people expect me to do.” 🙂

Have a wonderful evening in the great state of TX!
      MB, Bella and Molly

      • Texas Sue says:

MB thanks for the feedback and the quote! It’s so true I came to my senses about two years ago, just too old and tired to try pleasing others, friends and family deserted in droves LoL 😂 but I feel so good and peaceful. Have a wonderful weekend—
        -Texas Sue

  11. Dawn in Michigan says:

Well I, for one will wait anxiously for whatever you have planned!

  12. Mary in CO says:

Thanks for the update. I saw those same placemats on Amazon and almost bought them. However, I’d have to take some of my present placemats to donate at the the thrift store so that I could justify new ones. No more new “stuff” unless something old is deleted.
Haven’t truck camped all summer as we spent the time installing new decking and railing. Husband is the installer and I’m the gofer, holder, “put your weight on it”, hold this end right there person. Now that we are finishing, we want to get out in September and October.
Always happy to see a post from you.

So Glad to see you back!
As Always, it is like catching up with an old friend. Who you haven’t talked to for a long time.
I think if you ask each reader, you will find that it is a joy to see what you have to share. each time it is like catching up. I am sure that whatever you do in the future will be looked at with enthusiasm!
    A surprise that is enjoyed

  15. Linda in NE says:

I’ve enjoyed reading another blog post from you and seeing what you’ve been up too. When you own a home there is always something to do, isn’t there. Your repaired and refreshed bathroom looks great. I really like the turquoise with the white.

  16. Columbus Calvin says:

    Hi, Sue!

I’ll follow your writing in whatever mode if I can. Your writing “works” for me, and you have a loving view that will enhance your stories about people you’ve met.

All of the pictures are good. I especially love “big” scenery like the header picture, but the picture of the rabbit is cool, the bathroom looks great to me (and I like that kind of deals), and all the Reggie and Roger pictures add to it.

I’m the guy with the Frogg Toggs and rain hat. I’ve used and enjoyed my stuff. I recommend the hat too.

  17. Michelle SLC, UT says:

Sue, thank you for giving me the inspiration to buy our sportsmobile. We enjoyed going to Yellowstone and Zion national parks. We also loved going fishing.
My husband enjoyed every minute and never let the wheelchair and his disability get him down. He got the chance to meet and play with all 6 of his grandkids.
As I start my life without him, know how thankful I am to you and your blog.
    Thank you!

    • rvsueandcrew says:

Oh, Michelle, I am so sorry for your loss. I’m glad you and your husband had those enjoyable times together. May those memories be a comfort for you. You made them possible and, reading between the lines, I suspect your husband was grateful for those experiences with you.

Your example reminds us to turn dreams into reality. Time is precious and we don’t know how much we have. Again, my condolences.

    • MB from VA says:

      Dear Michelle,

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s wonderful that you were able to get that Sportsmobile and create those memories together. I know those are what help me on the not so great days…..those memories we can pull out and wrap around us like a soft, warm “comforter”.

      Love from VA,
      MB, Bella and Molly

    • Texas Sue says:

Oh Michelle, I’m so sorry for your loss. It is painful, I’m so glad you had good times together Such precious memories. I will be praying for you and your family,

Sad to hear of your loss, Michelle!! May God be with you as you learn this new life alone…it may well be the lot we all face at some point. Glad you were able to spend time with all of the grandkids…that is a joyful thing to do!!

Wondered where you’ve been. Your bathroom is done! Looks great, and I love your choice of color for towels. Looks just like mine! 🙂
Looking forward to your new undertaking! Hugs.

So nice to see a new post from you. It’s been a week of changes here in Charleston SC, we sold all our motorcycles (3 of them).. it was getting too hard for me even on the trike, and my husband wasn’t doing well either. We sold our Jeeps last month, the savings on insurance and taxes is amazing.

    Hi Sue!

I read every word and loved it! Your house and yard are lovely.

    Have a wonderful evening!

    • MB from VA says:

      PS

Like you, I’ve been putting the girls in the truck and going out to take walks some days. Last week, we went to the Blue Ridge Parkway (about an hour from us in two directions) for awhile. There is a part of the trail that I know where there are usually very few people. It’s an easy walk if you want it to be and a difficult one if you want it to be. For this time, we chose easy by the creek with a picnic, compliments of Subway.

It occurred to me, as I was walking, that as much as I long to see certain areas of the country that are not “home” to me…..others feel the same way and would love to be on that trail….by that creek. I am “friends with” a group on FB that is all about “Hygee”….which has to do with creating a warm, cozy lifestyle. No drama allowed and many nice people……like on this blog. ANYway…..I posted a picture of the girls by the creek and said where we were. And sure enough……one of the members said that she was planning to come to the parkway next year…..it was on her Bucket List! So, I told her when I thought were the best times to visit. And she told me some of her favorite places on the UP of Michigan. 🙂

As this hot, humid, bug filled summer comes to a close, the girls and I will be going on more and more walks….and when I’m back in shape…..hikes! I have backpacks for the dogs. Bella likes to “ride” sometimes and my arm gets tired. But she likes her front facing pack. I got Molly one that goes on my back but has her front facing like a child. We’ll see how that works out. Thankfully, Molly hangs right in there with me and has more “go-juice” than Bella. I was not planning to get another dog when Wyndy crossed the bridge last Spring but now I can’t imagine our life without her! She is the funniest dog I have ever met and makes me LOL every day!

I hope that one day soon, I’ll feel the familiar crunch of a western trail. But for right now….today……I’ll try to remember that someone is wishing they were HERE….and enjoy where I am now. For as you mentioned with Michelle, we need to cherish every moment.

      Have fun out there!

      • Columbus Calvin says:

Hi, MB! I remember the Blue Ridge Parkway fondly. My (now ex-) wife and I drove the full length of it in about 2006. We only took four days to “do” the 469 miles; I’d like to go back and spend a week on the next trip.

        • MB from VA says:

          Hi Columbus Calvin!

I’ve done a lot of it in sections but never the whole thing. That would be an awesome trip…especially in the Spring when the azaleas, laurel, and red buds are blooming. Or in the Fall when the leaves change! I hope you get to make the trip!

          • Columbus Calvin says:

We did it in July; it just worked out that way for us. That was a good thing, too. We were/I am tent campers. The last night, southwest of Asheville, NC, at about 2200 feet the temps dropped into the 40s. We hadn’t brought a heater along, but we were okay cuddling. However, any colder weather would have given us trouble. The whole trail is beautiful.

  21. Alice says:

Whoo Whoo Sue is back ! Love your house. Sounds like you have the thrifting thing down. So happy you and the boys are well. Don’t worry about what to do, just be yourself. We like you that way !!

  22. Linda in Minnesota says:

I agree with Alice. We like you however you choose your life to be. It’s YOU we like. And everything you have reported doing was fun to read even when it was something sad because you present everything so well. I support you in keeping on keeping on however you choose to do that.

  23. Millie says:

    Hi Sue!!
So happy you are doing well and contemplating what is “next”! I love your writing style and the perspective you bring to your tales. I think you have a very willing audience here in the blogosphere- fingers- crossed you continue to share with us.

All the household projects look great snd the boys look happy and healthy. All thr best to you on your continued journey.

    Sue,
I am so glad when I discover a post from you. You are a legend. I am proud to be a lurking Blogorino these days.
You and the boys seem very healthy. The boys do, anyway, and your spirit, for sure!
    Thanks for the post.

  25. Elaine and Miss Lovey says:

Oh Sue! So happy to hear from you. Love love love the bathroom and the salsa placemats!

Miss Lovey are still full-time in our 29RLSS Heartland North Trail. Presently, volunteering in Florida State Parks. It’s fun, adventurous, and I’m learning so much about native plants, seaturtles, Loggerheads, Greens and Leatherbacks.

Had to evacuate from the site I’m in to northern Florida almost to Western Georgia. Again I stayed at another state park. Got treated to a tour of an 1840s plantation home. So interesting! Then the camp host and some volunteers invited Miss Lovey and I to their campfire. What really awesome people.

Upon my return to the original park, reality strikes me. My 16 weeks at this park is almost over. I discussed this with the park manager who writes one email and wahla, I have a new volunteer site in another park for October, November and December. My current Park Manager said to contact him so he can assist with another volunteer site at another park for after December. WOW!

This coming year I’ll be traveling to visit friends in New York and perhaps around new England. Yup, we are going to be “snowbirds”. Hahahahaha!

I look forward to your next post! Enjoy the cooler upcoming months!

BTW, I’m thinking about a generator to strap down onto my back shelf that pulls out from below the rear of the trailer. This way I can boondock during my travels. What do you and the blogarinos think?

    • Elaine and Miss Lovey says:

Oh I should add that I had to evacuate because of hurricane Dorian.

    • Linda Rose, Molly and Midgy in Carmichael, CA says:

Elaine I love having a generator in my Roadtrek. Boondocking is great and much quieter and less expensive than staying in RV parks.

      • Elaine and Miss Lovey says:

Apparently, you probably need less of a generator than I would, I appreciate your reply, Linda Rose. What make and brand is your generator?

  26. AZ Jim says:

So nice to read another of my friends posts. God bless you Missy and a big head pat for Reggie and Roger…Jim

  27. So nice to hear from you Sue!! I love that you are enjoying life!! Whatever your new plan is —go for it!!! Your house looks lovely!!

  28. Linda Rose, Molly and Midgy in Carmichael, CA says:

So happy to see your post Sue. Am still trying to remember to shop Amazon from your blog. My Roadtrek has been neglected but I’m trying to get my travel mojo back. She’s been bathed and serviced and on a short roadtrip in hope of her passing her smog check this month. Wish me luck! Love the bright colors in your cozy abode. Love to you and the R&R’s from me and the M&M’s

I full-timed for 6.5 years with my kitty. Suddenly, I found myself settled in an Escapee park with a home base. I just, almost overnight, lost interest in continuing. Surprised me. I’m happy staying still at the moment. Still have my rig but want to sell it. Haven’t. Turquoise is my favorite accent color.

    • Texas Sue says:

Hi Andrea, I’ve done the same. Travel for 7 years and one day just didn’t want to. I was needed to take my grandson to school and back so I have moved into an apartment for the next 8 months. I just sold my 5th wheel but I’m looking for a home base.

What do you think of the Escapees park and are there very many of them? How did you decide where to stop?

      Have a great weekend…Texas Sue

    • Elaine and Miss Lovey says:

Andrea, I’m thinking the same thing in a few years. I almost did that a year ago and I’m so happy that I didn’t at that time.

  31. Denise - Richmond VA says:

    Hi, Sue,

It was so nice to see a new post! You have been missed!

You really have been super a busy with home projects. I bet your home almost glows with the fresh coat of white paint! With each completed project, your home’s former life becomes history. Your sweet abode is a comfortable, calm place for you, Reggie, and Roger to enjoy! The afternoon movie routine is the perfect escape from the heat of the day. 😊

Your bathroom looks so nice! I love the pop of turquoise. I have the same little clock – isn’t it just too cute?!

The bunny must like to play chicken with Roger. “Yeah, yeah…bark all you want…you caann’t get me!”. LOL! We have a squirrel whom I named Sparky who likes to hop on top of the back patio pergola and taunt Gracie pup on the other side of the window.

I look forward to hearing about your plans when and if you would like to share with us. Sending lots of love and hugs to you, Reggie, and Roger from me and Gracie pup. We love you! Take good care, my friend. 🐾. 💕 😊

    P. S. – You will get the BLT spruced up in no time. You have been busy sprucing up your main home – there are only so many hours in the day! 😊

  32. Piper says:

    Still love reading your posts!

  33. Jolene/Iowa says:

    Hi Sue,
So good to see a new post from you! It sounds like you have been busy! So glad things continue to come together for your home.

I also have a box or two of VHS tapes that I just can’t get rid of even though I don’t have a VCR to use. I figure some day I may get one again….

We are super busy right now. Flooring, papers and my newest venture of crosses I make. Between the 3 and keeping up the house, laundry, walking Harley several times a day, my life is full and I haven’t even mentioned my FB time I try to get in each day.

Love reading about Reggie and Roger, they fill your life and house with love!
I always look forward to your many tales, progress or lack of at your new home and love the thrift store finds!

Take care Sue, and everyone else!

Great to hear from u again. Hot and dry here too. Can’t wait to see what the blog is going to morf into. You are such a great storyteller I am sure it will be interesting and well written. My life has changed since I have been following you just like your life has. I am retired now and do not have the time to spend reading on the internet like when I worked. I am not sitting in front of a computer all day. I have become an unpaid Uber driver for grandkids. Thank for sharing . I live it when you do.

  35. Laurie Milliard2 says:

So happy to see a post from you today, Sue! I really love your writing style, no matter what the sibject. Looking forward to reading about your next steps. My husband and I have been camp hosting all summer at a county park in Western Washington. We really liked our first camp hosting positiion, and were also near family and friends to visit. Looking forward to getting back on the road shortly! Will cross the country and end up in Florida in November. Take care! Laurie, traveling in a Nash trailer

  36. Wow, What a great post , I have a big Heart problem, HF, and I’m in Prescott VAMC Hospital getting it fixed hopefully. Piper is still in Kentucky and doing great, she has all the love that can comfort her in my absence and I feel that the best thing on her part for I may pass on with out her near me. I needed to get in dry air for my lungs and she needs the seasons to stay cool. My only wishes are for all to be happy in my passing, for to suffer no more and be in peace,, my love to you all ,,,,,, thanks for your prayers and some day we’ll see you all again,,,, Rusty

    • Barbara (Nashville) says:

Rusty, I am so sorry to hear this news. I hope they can fix your heart and that you will be able to return to KY and Piper. I will keep praying for you.

    • Pat in Bulverde TX says:

      God bless you, Rusty

    • Suzicruzi says:

Hi Rusty, I am hoping your “heart problems” will turn into just a bump in the road. I’ve enjoyed your stories and RVSue’s interactions and friendship with you over the years. I know that we will all leave our earthly bodies someday, and go home. So yes, we’ll meet again for sure. It will probably be on some dusty and bumpy dirt roads, and all our doggies will be playing together nearby. Dogs and cats, as I hope to see all my cat buddies again one day too.

You do what the docs say, okay? Or at least part of the time. 😉. I’ll be thinking of you and Miss Piper, and sending along prayers of peace and love. Take good care Rusty, and if you do “travel” – travel safe, and show us a li’l sign now and then.

      Love Suzi, Mochi too 😽💕

    • Dawn in NC says:

Hi Rusty, so sorry to hear of your heart problems. I echo Suzi. I hope that you can get it fixed, and it’s just one more bump in the road. Either way, we will meet up again for sure!

May God richly bless and be with you, Rusty.

Prayers for you, Rusty and Piper.

    • rvsueandcrew says:

What a surprise to hear you’re in Arizona again, Rusty! Last time you wrote you were in Kentucky and your truck needed major repair.

Sounds like you’re getting the care you need and Lady Piper is in good hands, too. Best wishes to both of you. 🙂

    • Elizabeth says:

Sorry you must go through this, Rusty…but think you are wise to prepare for whatever comes, the best one can! Sometimes the doctors are very wrong. My dear mom was given the pronouncement of a very soon death from her heart. Turned out she lived 10 more years to everyone’s surprise. It is wise for us all to be prepared for that as there is no promise of tomorrow, esp. those who ride in cars and planes, etc. Pays to have things in order. Sounds like you have done what is best for your dog too…always a worry for her isn’t it? Take good care of yourself. We will all be hoping and praying you get better and soon!!

      • Hi every one, found out that the doctors took the drain tubes out too soon up in Louisville and there’s fluid in my lungs, +A Fib, with real thin walls in my heart, the doctors in Louisville also said that I need chemo for they suspected cancer in my blood. I’m have been tested for the latter and so far no results yet here at the Prescott VAMC, I’m living at the U.S. VETS Housing on Hurley street around the corner from the Hospital and taking everything real slow because I get out of breath real easy, it’s hard on me to try and lay down without a wedge and sometimes I just sleep setting up, I was given a breath building machine and I use it 4 times a day and I blow it and am at 1000, it goes up 5000 but that’s a long way from where I am at today,,,,, I truly thank all your wonderful wishes and prayers and will give you all a update on my progress. May our Lord Jesus Bless you all,,,,,,,, Rusty

        • Texas Sue says:

Rusty I’m so glad you’re getting the treatment you need. I’m praying for God to give wisdom to the doctors and anyone else involved in your care. I’m asking God to bless you and heal you and I know God answers prayers. I don’t know you, only from this blog, Blessings Texas Sue

        • mary batt says:

Hi Rusty, it sounds like you are getting good care and support…4 times a day on your breathing machine! Hope it will show your lungs getting a bit stronger every day.
You have given such good care and love to Piper, and she is comfortable in loving care as you take care of yourself.
We are all in Gods hands; He walks with you and Piper every day.
I hope you get the rest you need in the most comfortable position you can find for sleeping. We are all there for you and Piper in our hearts as is God.
          Blessings to you!

    Hi RV Sue!
I still read every post expectantly and am thrilled that your writing vehicle may be changing. Oh goody! You have a knack for phrasing and the good sense of observation that is familiar yet extraordinary for your readers. So many blogerinos have encouraged you to write a book….could it be? Put me down for an advance payment on any writing project of yours.

So good to hear from you! I’m glad the boys are doing well. I love the bathroom – that aqua color is what I have in my bath, bedroom and kitchen. I love it, and it’s popular now so easy to find things. That’s a great idea to get a video player. And you got Harvey! Now I need to see it again. No one like Jimmy Stewart! That was such a unique and sweet movie. I’m intrigued by what you are up to in the writing department! A book would be good!

Many years ago, before you began your road journey, I asked if it was OK for us to ride alo

ng with you in the passenger seat. We have enjoyed every mile and thank your for every written word and every person you have befriended along the way.

We are currently on what may be our final RV journey. From the Wine Country in Northern California through Nevada, Idaho, Montana, north of Seattle and back down through Washington and Oregon to home in Santa Rosa, California.

In Helena, Montana for a couple more days. My wife has been in 2 emergency rooms in the first 10 days out and my vision is not what it used to be. I think our bodies are telling us to stay closer to home, although neither of us would trade our last 17 years on the road for anything.

Give those pups (and yourself) a hug from us. We’ll keep watching for your next post.

Hi again Sue and Crew, just a Thank You for whatever you write about. I have read, I think, every one of your post and seen all your glorious pictures over the years and I have loved them all. As long as you and the crew are happy and healthy, that is what matters. What and how much of your lives you wish to lets us peek at is a blessing no matter what it entails.
Thanks for everything and I look forward to what comes next from you and the crew.

    Good Morning from Gold Beach!

It’s kinda hard to be in the spirt of writing, which I stopped in to do, when you are all choked up by what another Blogerino wrote….

I’ll stop by another time. xo

  46. Lisa W says:

    Hi Sue and Crew,
I love reading your blog, whether it is on the road or happenings at home in AZ. Doesn’t seem to matter which your writing will draw me in. I agree with Steve K., as long as you and the crew are doing well we are happy.

  47. weather says:

It’s nice that you and the boys take walks away from the neighborhood streets. I smiled when I saw your sentence “I like quiet walks.” The header photo of the BLT so far away from anyone is a beautiful illustration of that. Your considering a different vehicle for your writing seems to give this post an underlying theme-
…stepping just beyond the reach of crowds while being yourself in a creative way.

You felt long ago that you needed to shelve an idea that appealed to you, Sue. You dedicated your self, time and energy to other people, responsibilities and priorities. That is admirable, right, understandable and ENOUGH. I would love to see you choose freedom this time. Do what you’re inspired to, what you want to, what you’re led to, try something different and if you love it, great, if not, walk in another direction or just be still for a while.

How kind of that volunteer to fix the VCR for you. Your ability to live on less and enjoy life more continually impresses and amazes me. I imagine your home is beyond lovely after all the work, repairs and tasteful decorating it’s received since you bought it. It’s no wonder that even a rabbit cannot resist a visit 🙂

  48. Renee (Datil / North Ranch / soon-to-be Aztec NM) says:

I’ve so enjoyed your writing — particularly style of writing! — over the years, and look forward to your posts whenever you get around to or feel like writing one. I sincerely hope you don’t totally “drop out,” because I’d be devastated not to know how the boys are getting along. It sounds like you have made a lovely nest in AZ. As you know from past experience, things change & we look at things differently at different time. Just glad to know you’re still enjoying fixing your place up. Everything looks wonderful!

  49. Change is inevitable, and delightful when we can enjoy it. You’re making such a sweet spot for you and the boys to enjoy. And you still have access to the beautiful desert that you love so much! Love the bright table.

We too have found a cute little spot in southeast Arizona. Escrow should close in the next two weeks and then we’ll have a winter base in Tombstone! We will still travel most of the year for a while, but I’m also excited about the idea of making a stationary home again. If we can help you with anything please let me know :-)))

  50. Andrea Gogolan says:

Love this blog Sue! Continue with your writings please in any form that works for you because you bring loads of joy to all of us.
A faithful reader and will continue to be 🙂

  51. Cynthia in San Clemente says:

I read all the way to the end because I saw the post was dated yesterday, so no need to try to be first or in the top ten! It’s funny because I actually checked two days ago to see if you had posted anything recently and perhaps I had missed it. I just knew you were busy with some project, although I assumed it was house or yard related. It’s nice to see you’re giving the Casita some love – it looks really cute with the bright white paint and black trim – that’s such a trend in design right now – white houses with black framed windows!!! It was so thoughtful of the thrift store guy to fix the VCR/VHS player for you. It’s such a nice quality when people really listen to others and then act on it. Not too long ago I mentioned to a neighbor that I love lemons and when she was on vacation she picked up a jar of delicious lemon marmalade for me – it was so good my mouth puckers up whenever I think about it!

Your ruminations on your writing direction made me think of how we get so much information (whether we want it or not) on the rich and famous and irrelevant that I think people may crave stories about ordinary people who do good, kind, meaningful things. When I was a little girl I used to love Readers Digest – my Nana subscribed to it and I would always read them at her house – they had wonderful stories about dogs and ordinary people. The last time I saw a RD it seems they had gone off in more of a health and fitness direction. Whatever you decide to write about I’m sure we will all be lined up to read it!

Sammy is doing a bit better. The acupuncture seemed to help only for a few hours but not long-term. So we decided to take him off Adequan, which is supposed to be the gold-standard for canine arthritis treatment, but was causing him to lose his appetite, and switched him to a NSAID, which seems to be helping quite a bit with his pain and mobility. Plus, now his appetite is back. Made me think maybe I should go on Adequan to lose weight – LOL!!! Give those rascally pups a hug from me while your cuddled up watching your movies!!!

  52. Barbara (Nashville) says:

So happy to see this post and all the blogorino comments. Sorry I have been kind of absent lately. Like Sue I am getting things spruced up around here now that I have a more manageable work load.
Hubby has been having some issues and is now back in Physical therapy 3 days a week, plus he had cataract surgery which took up a lot of time last month. Lots of doctor appt. these days.
Love the new placemats. I will probably make some quilted ones after I decide what color I am going to paint the dining room and living room. They are one big open room. Thinking of a real pale gray, with maybe a navy blue under the chair rail in the D/R. Most everything goes with those colors.
When I get that done, I need to think about flooring. This carpet is looking real bad & I am sick of it. All it takes is money. I need to think about what will hold up the best with the Angel and the probability that hubby will be in a wheelchair one day.
I still want to RV one day, but things are looking more & more doubtful. It may come down to renting one periodically for my own sanity. It was nice seeing the Casita out and getting a clean up job. Thought you were going to tell us you were going to head out on a short trip for a week or two, before the weather turns bad. I think if I was that close to nice boondocking areas I would take off as much as possible. To me housework can be put on a back burner. LOL
Take care Sue and all the blorgorinos. Give Reg & Rog a hug for us.

  53. Elizabeth says:

Good to have some plans and ideas to work on, Sue…wishing you the best in all of that. One certainly never knows what a day will hold…but sometimes we do get to do some of our “wishes”. Well, the appt for hubby this week with the specialist was not encouraging. And in reading more online, along with my daughters, etc as to what all to expect…guess there will not be an easy answer nor easy solution. This is expected to shorten his life. But if he reaches his birthday in December and it would look like he will…he will be 70. So many people never reach that so we must remain grateful for what we have been given so far. We have some choices to make…and none of them easy. So will be busy researching and maybe seeking some other opinions. He has a visit with his nurse practioner (better than most doctors in these parts) on Monday so maybe she will help guide us a bit. Looks like I will be busier with time, in trying to help him. But perhaps I was born for just this job. Thanks for giving us a place to share and learn.
PS…the bathroom is very beautiful…I am very fond of white too!

      Hi Elizabeth,

I’m sorry you didn’t get better news at the doctor. It’s scary in one way not to know what to expect and in another when you do. I’m so glad that you have daughters and a good nurse practitioner to support you as you support your husband. And I agree….the NPs I’ve met have been wonderful, knowledgeable professionals who add a personal touch.

Hang in there and let us know how things are going.

      Love from VA,

      • Elizabeth says:

        Thank you MB and friends,

Well, so far nothing much accomplished…we saw the provider…she ordered some blood pressure meds for Hubby, and I asked for the lowest dose to start…she assured me it was…got home, got online, and NOPE tis not…so when we got to the druggist we asked about cutting the pills smaller…and fortunately it is one you can…so we are doing it ourselves, to start…I HATE BEING LIED TO!! So guess we are back to square one again…and I had liked that woman too. I am to see another full fledged doc myself next week…so will see if she lies too. This is not the best time to be hunting a doctor…but it seems to be necessary in this woebegone town…sigh!!
Thanks for caring! Love from WA, Elizabeth

    Hello Sue.

I have to admit that I miss your camping blog a lot. That being said, I really appreciate you keeping the blog alive. I like to go back and read the old posts frequently. I really enjoy your writing style. I have told you before that I find it very comforting and I find myself reading old blogs right before I go to sleep because it takes me to a different place before I drift off. You mentioned that you are thinking of how your blog will evolve with your new reality. Does that mean that you might be writing a book? Because if you are – I am buying.

Hi Blogorinos! I am so excited that it’s FRIDAY!!!! Anyone have fun plans for the weekend. On my agenda are some leisurely lunches with friends, cooking a new recipe and cleaning a bit. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am ready for some fall weather. Right now in NC, it’s just one long continuation of summer. I can’t wait for the time of year when I can turn off my a/c and my heat and just have my windows open! Nothing beats the fresh air, when mornings are just a little bit too cool and I have to snuggle under the blankets.

    • MB from VA says:

      Hi Dawn!

Still hot and humid here too. We had a couple of cooler days but they were just a tease! 🙂

I went to lunch with a friend and then went to see The Peanut Butter Falcon. It was a very sweet movie. There haven’t been that many I wanted to see lately, so this one was very welcome. Plus we saw it at the “second showing/discount” theater. Even better! There were a couple of interesting previews. As a former K teacher….and Tom Hanks lover…..I can’t wait for the Mr. Rogers movie.

Getting ready to settle into the recliner with my girls.

      Have a restful evening!

Hi, Sue, Reggie, Roger, and my fellow blogorinos!

It is so hard to believe that it is October already! The holidays will be here before we know it! I am looking forward to cooler weather and fresh caramel apples! It has been so extremely dry here that many trees are shedding dried up leaves. One of my pear trees has a few red leaves and the crape myrtle leaves are taking on an orangish hue. I welcome any Fall color! 🍁

Dawn & MB: It sounds like you both had a great weekend sharing lunch with friends. I had a great weekend, too! One of my sisters and her hubby came to visit. They helped me run a couple errands, and took care of some minor repairs of my back porch & steps. We had a nice visit and had a spaghetti and meatball dinner with garlic bread at home. My sister found and shared treasure: a rhubarb strawberry pie she found on clearance at Kroger in the frozen section. We had the pie for dessert and reminisced about our Grandma’s homemade pies. 😊

Gracie pup and I send well wishes to all! Take good care of yourselves, my friends. **hugs** 😊

Sue: sending lots of love and hugs for you, Reggie, and Roger from me and Gracie pup! 😊

        Hi, MB!

If our weather forecasters are correct, the humidity will stick (no pun intended!) with us for another week. The temps will be close to 100 the next couple of days, and then finish off the week in the 80s. Late next week, the autumn temps should arrive! Happy, happy, joy, joy! 😊

Have a good evening, MB, with your sweeties Bella and Molly!

Thinking of you there in the never ending summer and humidity!! Our daughter in central NC is also in same. One thing I DO NOT miss about that area!! It is humid here too…but cooler which helps. We went for a short walk enjoying the nippish fall air and cool temps today. Hubby cannot walk very far at this time. We still hope for better days. The medical situation is not encouraging. We do live in a 3rd world country medically…sigh…oh well…maybe with time a clear solution will be found.

I am glad that you and your husband were able to enjoy a walk to savor the cooler temperature. Have the leaves started to change color yet? You and your family are always in my prayers. Sending you a **hug** Remember to take good care of yourself! 😊

  66. Elizabeth says:

So nice to hear from you Denise…and YES we have color…seems like the brightest and most stupendous ever…but with the cold nights now…not sure how long that will last…but we will keep enjoying it so long as we can!! Thank you so much for the prayers…we surely need them as we try to go through medical care in this country these days…or is it mostly because we are older now? One wonders…any rate, so far, so good. We are doing as well as we can. Sending you a hug back and you take care too…hope your Fall leaves will stick around awhile…I just love FALL!!

Went to see Rusty a week ago. He is not going to blow away any time soon. He seemed to be doing pretty good especially getting three squares a day. Just thought I would pop in for an update. I am going to be 70 the day before Rusty and doing pretty well but it is getting to be harder for us to travel. We are surprisingly going to have our 3rd grandchild from our 46 year old son. Helped him clean out his house he is selling here this week and has moved to Eugene, Or. Not happy about that but every place has it’s pro and cons and thankfully we all get to make our own choices in life. Always enjoy your updates Sue. Glad you are enjoying your home base. It’s still good to get out once in awhile though and we try. I guess we will have reason to go to Eugene now. Hope your Casita got the attention it needs. I am working up the ambition to get some gel gloss on ours soon. Enjoy the cool weather. Gloria

    • Elizabeth says:

Thanks for the update on Rusty…it is always good to hear that others are doing ok!!
And what a surprise…a new grandchild…we have sure enjoyed our youngest one here who is just 6 now…the delight of our lives…hope you get to see this child often!!

  68. Paula Frazee says:

Hi Sue! I followed you for a couple of years as we were planning our retirement travels. It is interesting to me that the average length of time most retirees who RV full time do so is five years – which is almost exactly how long you lived that lifestyle. I knew we would never do that, although I am planning on a few 2 – 3 months trips. I have utilized your site for ideas of places to visit – and to boondock to stretch our retirement collars. I have been surprised that you haven’t taken a trip this summer at all. I am curious about whether you feel compelled to travel anymore, or are content to enjoy nature from your comfy porch! What has been the reasoning behind your decision?

  69. weather says:

My family , friends and neighbors are doing alright, I am, too. For several reasons, though, they have been the focus of more of my time and attention than usual. So I haven’t been commenting on here, thinking I likely won’t have time to respond to notes people leave in reply. I have been checking in to read new comments or use an Amazon link to window shop. I’m glad for those among us with good news, and care about those that are struggling. The foliage here has just begun to get more autumn like, and the temps make us appreciate our warm clothes and cozy homes. Hope all the blogorinos and Sue are staying well and happy 🙂

    • Elizabeth says:

Glad to hear your update Weather…and that you are ok!! Thanks for letting us know!!

Thank you, sweet ladies , all is well in my little world, it’s truly lovely here during this early part of autumn, sending love and hugs to you and yours. 🙂

Hi Everyone. Sorry I’ve been gone for so long. I got to take a short trip out West to reconnect with friends that I hadn’t seen in almost twenty years. It was great seeing them ang getting to meet their kids. I also got to spend some time in the Rocky Mountains. I saw big horned sheep 🐑, a herd of elk, a Stellar’s Jay and Magpies. None of which you can find in NC. It was so beautiful up there! Now I’m trying to get back into the home routine. I hope that everyone has been having a good week.

    • MB from VA says:

      Hi Dawn!

That trip sounds like so much fun! I have two friends out there that I want to see too. One is in CO and the other is in MT. We have been friends since Jr High! Thank goodness for Facebook! I know it can be used for not such good purposes but I have no drama on my page. I just have friends who are also real life friends and we laugh and cry together and build each other up. It’s the only way I’d ever get to “see them” or their kids/grands. But one day I will be hugging both of those western gals! So happy that you got to go visit yours!

      Have a good evening!

      Hi, Dawn!

      You were missed! 😊

Thank you for sharing the highlights of your trip with us! It sounds like you had a wonderful time! It is so wonderful to have life long friends. I have two sets of friends that go back almost 40 years. We try to get together a couple times a year; thank goodness for text and e-mail!! 😊

      Have a good evening!

    • Elizabeth says:

Glad you had a fun trip, Dawn…and reuniting with old friends is a great thing too!! By the way, one thing we do NOT have out here in the West is mocking birds…oh my how we miss those super singers…in NC, we used to have one who hung out by our garage and would sing like crazy. If we whistled or sang a song, he would become even more serious about singing even fancier songs. And if hubby had some music on while working on the car, that bird hung out…going silent if the music was not so great…put on some what I would call “high church” style music, seldom heard anymore…or another term might be classical, and that bird would sing along loudly…so funny!! Nothing out here in bird kingdom that we have heard so far!!

      • Dawn in NC says:

I agree Elizabeth, mocking birds are a hoot! I’m so glad you had a “resident” one when you lived in NC. I do enjoy the variety of birds that we have here. That’s why it was so exciting to me to see new birds out there. The Stellar’s Jay was amazing. I didn’t know what I was looking at at first. It had a crest on its head like a jay or cardinal, with a black head and a blue body. It was very shy and kept flying further into the brush. I didn’t get a good picture. For me, it’s always exciting to see something that I’d never seen before or even knew existed. Thinking about the birds, it makes me think I should start putting feeders up again for them. An extra expense, but it’s so nice to see them and to help them through the winter.

        • Elizabeth says:

One winter was just so cold and snowy there in NC so we fed the birds…and squirrels…gave up on feeders, just threw it all on the deck…those crazy squirrels…if they ran out of what they wanted (nuts or sunflower seeds)…they came up to the sliding glass door and put their paws on it and stood there looking in until we saw them. Being we had a pet door and dogs, they were awfully brave!! But we called them “our deck buddies”. Yea, it is fun to see new ones. We also enjoyed the cardinals back there!! I think jays are rare in lots of places…we have seen them here, but not often. This apt we had to move to back in May does not want us feeding birds…argh!! Oh well…life goes on.

Hi, Sue and my fellow blogorinos!

I hope everyone is doing well. 😊

Today has been cloudy and grey. This morning I was blessed to be in the right place at the right time to experience a minute of beautiful splendor.

It has been extremely dry here for months. We do not have much Fall color as most leaves are a crunchy, dried up brown. Early this morning as I stood at the back door watching the birds and squirrels flit about, the clouds parted in two small areas. The drab brown leaves on the pear and oak trees were briefly painted with a golden, glowing light. It was so beautiful! When sunlight streams through heavy cloud cover, I call that God rays. It is a reminder to appreciate and be thankful for all that we have been given to enjoy, even when things are not at their prime beauty. 😊

Gracie pup and I are doing the happy dance – it is raining! A slow, steady soaking rain! I hope it rains all night! 😊

Sending you, Reggie, and Roger lots of love and hugs from me and Gracie pup! Have a good evening! xo 🐾 😊

**Blogorinos: I am sure that Sue is busy taking care of things at home and may even be working on her new venture that she mentioned in this post. Sue will eventually check in!**

    • Dawn in NC says:

Denise, that sounds beautiful! I so appreciate that you can take joy in such glimpses of beauty. It finally rained here yesterday as well. Although I prefer sunny days, we too really needed the rain.

In my new cooking endeavor, I made a quiche from scratch for the first time last night! (Well, except for the pie crust. I’m not up for that yet!) It had asparagus, heirloom cherry tomatoes and rosemary. I also used Emmantalar Swiss cheese (one of my favorites!) and goat cheese. It was pretty good, if I do say so myself! This is definitely one recipe that I will make again. Later in the week, I’m going to make baked acorn squash stuffed with quinoa, tomatoes and corn. We’ll have to see how that goes. (I’m not a huge fan of quinoa, but I’d thought I’d take a chance.) Oh, I also made zucchini bread with a touch of orange zest. It was quite tasty, but didn’t include enough zucchini to suite me, only one cup. One of my challenges every week is to come up with 2-3 new recipes to cook for the next week. Usually, by the time I eat the same food for the third or fourth time, I don’t want to make that same thing again for awhile. I don’t even really want to freeze it. Oh well, first world problems.

I hope that all of you Blogorinos and Sue are having a good Monday.

      • Elizabeth says:

Quinoa is a grain that MUST be extensively rinsed…more than rice even. If you put water in the pan with the grain and swirl it around, banging the grains together while so doing…then rinse and rinse…it will taste much better. It has a natural coating that keeps it from being eaten while it grows apparently…so many recipes fail to inform a person of this…my daughter had cooked and eaten it for a long time…her mate refusing…then we rinsed it…all was well!! Maybe you already know this however… I like it best with strong flavors, like tomato, and spice you would use with tomato…be it towards the spaghetti side, or chili or such…

        • Cinandjules 🌵 says:

Hmmm..I’ve never rinsed quinoa. The first time I had it, it was pretty plain. I started using low sodium Chicken broth..instead of water. One cup dry quinoa and one can of chk broth..dump into rice cooker, press cook..it doesn’t need to steam after it clicks to “done” like rice does.

We like it with seafood…plain or a spritz of lemon. Being Asian…I kind of like it better than rice! 😳

        • Denise - Richmond VA says:

          Hi, Elizabeth and Cinandjules!

I rinse quinoa when I buy it by the scoopful, in the bulk food section. For a quick side dish, I like Near East Parmesan quinoa. No need to rinse the grains. Cooking quinoa is just as fast (if not faster) as Minute Rice! 😊

      • Denise - Richmond VA says:

        Hi, Dawn!

All of your new recipes sound delicious – especially the quiche! It can be a challenge to find new recipes that don’t make too much. I agree…after eating leftovers for lunch and dinner 3 days in a row, I am done!

We are supposed to get rain, rain, and more rain tomorrow! Yippee! 😊

I hope you have a nice evening, Dawn! I will be taking a live/online class about free motion quilting. This will be interesting. All of the students will log in and we will be able to interact with each other and the teacher. I am looking forward to learn a new quilting technique and experience this type of class. 😊

        • Dawn in NC says:

Hi guys! Well, I made the acorn squash stuffed with quinoa, tomatoes and corn. It was OK. Thanks for the tip about rinsing the quinoa, Elizabeth. I did rinse it, but discovered that the grains went right through the strainer that I bought to rinse it in. :-0 I think I managed to cook it OK. I liked Cin’s comment about cooking it in chicken broth. The quinoa was pretty bland. Overall, the whole recipe was pretty bland. It tasted OK, but nothing amazing. I’m really not excited to even eat it a second time!

Hey Denise, that online live class sounds like it will be a blast. It’s always fun to learn new things about activities that we like. You’ll have to let us know how it goes.

Yes, it’s cool and raining here today. It was SOOOOO hard to get out of my nice, comfortable warm bed and come to work!

I found a Cook’s Illustrated magazine with world wide soups and stews. It is awesome! Next meal, I’m really excited about. It’s going to be a pasta e fagoli (sp?). I’ll let y’all know how it turns out.

          • Elizabeth says:

Well, Dawn…some days cooking are better than others…a recipe I have been tweaking…argh…barely ok to eat too…back to the drawing board!! Your recipe sounds good however…maybe some more stuff like onions, garlic, maybe even oregano and/or basil?? I really like those flavors myself. Yea, you must have a very fine strainer for quinoa…one of mine holds maybe only a cup or so…but nothing gets through it.

Well, lookie where you are now! I’ve followed your blogging off and on over the years while you traveled out west with the original crew as well as your current one. It’s been some vicarious ride, but my real reason has been to see how this plays out in practical terms. Your journey has been quite the education, girl, and I’m very grateful, as I’m sure many more are, too. Thank you very much for sharing your travels and trials with us.

I couldn’t help but admire that mesquite tree in your yard. The pods are edible, and some folks use a flail grinder to turn the whole pod into flour. A regular flour grinder gets gummy when trying to grind them. I hear it makes awesome biscuits and great additions to soups and stews, among other things. Some folks probably store them dried as a survival food. Just thought I’d share that as my minor contribution for you. I’m looking forward to trying them out myself.

By the way…I’m going back through your entire journey from beginning to now because it was so good the first time. There’s a whole lot of information archived here! Thanks again for providing it to us!

Wow! How nice of you to wish me a happy birthday! Thank you!

Yes, today was a lovely day. The boys and I puttered around the house in beautiful, cool, fall weather (Arizona style). I went into town to pick up a piece of my favorite cake (white on white) and also to hit the thrift shops. Came home with a pretty flower pot along with books and music CDS. These were birthday gifts to myself.

The best gifts of all, however, are your visits to my blog. I enjoy every comment and think of you often, even those who haven’t appeared in a long while. Hope you are well and happy.

Hello All and Belated Happy Birthday Wishes to you, Sue.

This fall has been one of the most beautiful I can recall. Picture perfect weather. Those bright blue skys behind the brilliant foliage. We had the opportunity to be in Lake George, in the Adirondacks, last weekend and were up on Prospect Mountain enjoying the view. What great work He has done.

We’re off to Pennsyvania and Kentucky to visit some old friends for a long weekend. Loads of driving, but it looks like it will be a beautiful time to see some foliage and mountain views.

Take care everyone, my thoughts are with this group often.
Hugs to Sue, Reggie and Roger, especially.

As an aside, my son (who had a work place accident before Christmas last year) will be returning to work full time next Monday. He’s doing very well. He’ll have one more major surgery within the next few months to button up some adjustments on his hand and prepare him for a prosthetic. So Onward! Thank you again for your thoughts and prayers. God is good.

Hi Sue and everyone! Happy Belated Birthday Sue!! We have been very busy this last month so I haven’t been on here too much. Keeping busy with both of the jobs and then my sewing at home that has become kind of a 3rd job of sorts.

So glad to check in and read how you all are doing! Heading to a campground my son will be at this weekend to do a Halloween event with the grandkids. Just going out for the evening but it will be fun!

  93. Suzicruzi says:

Sue, a very Happy Belated Birthday! Shame on me for not getting to this on time. I meant to-

So much to say, so little service where we have been. It’s been a blast and I LOoOVE our Wave 3! We needed it in Arches when it dipped into the 20’s last week. 😳😳

We left Gold Beach OR on Sept 30, and made our way to 395 S out of CA and into NV. We choose the Lonliest Highway in America; NV 50 to get across the State. We found 3 good boondocks! The last one, Hickison Summit Rec area, was just too sweet! A FREE BLM CG with toilets, tables, trash, lots of shade, and Pictographs to hike to right there. Very COLD nights in that area- and super grateful for our new heater!! That thing warms us like a champ!

Into UT we camped at Maple Grove CG, as we loved it last year per your recommendation. In fact, last night I was re-reading your blog way back in 2015 (maybe earlier?) when you also returned there, but choose the free site outside the entrance, near Ivy Creek. Your pictures and mine, of the lovely fall colors and the red rock mountain behind the camp, are so similar! Looking at your blog last night- I ran across Ponderosa CG outside of Pink Sands- and I think we’ll be hitting that one too next week.

Anyway, from MG CG, we headed toward Goblin Valley off UT 24. We were going to Boondock out there but, Larry got us a spot in the Park as a surprise to me for my birthday- SHOWERS!! HaHa. Yes, we are close in Birthdays, that’s why I’m mad at myself for not reaching out to you sooner. My bad. I hope it was a good one Sue! Lol- back to my story…

At Goblin we hiked our hineys off. One hike in particular, the Little Wild Horse Slot Canyon 5 mi to the E of the Park entrance. What an AMAZING place!! My first ever slot canyon hike and I’m hooked! Sure wish I could share some photos!

On to Arches for a week of hiking, and playing. We Boondocked off Klondike Bluffs road, North of the park off 191. Nothing to write about; well worn and torn, and basically a dust bowl. Ugh. Arches was very cool though. We did have a wonderful time finding all the arches and hikes in the park. Also, we were treated to beautiful moon rises and sets among the red rock there, during the full moon week. Fantastic scenery!

Next, on to Dead Horse Point SP and Canyonlands. We found another el’cheapo BLM CG right between the two parks, for $10. Huge sites, clean! toilets, tables, pits, and some shade (ours was a corner shaded site, and very big!! It was # 47 if anyone wants to know. It was Horsethief CG. Our highlights between the two parks are; sunrise at Deadhorse Point in DHSP, and a hike called Neck Springs in Canyonlands. The sunrise was to die for over the Gooseneck of the Green River. Stunning! I’ve yet to be able to post anything to my IG page, but hope to when we have decent connectivity. Canyonlands was pretty amazing too. I’ve not been to either of these parks before, so it was great. The Neck Springs hike in CLNP was a favorite bc you actually descend into the canyon, and the scenery changes from what you can see from the overlooks on top. At the bottom of the canyon, where the seeps, or springs are, there are cottonwoods turning bright yellow now. It was a 5.8 mile loop, and challenging; what goes down must come up, or something like that! 😅😅

Today we are on the road again toward Nat’l Bridges Monument and Highway 24 through Hanksville, and into Capitol Reef. No idea where we will camp tonight! It’s “SOTP” night- or, seat of the pants night. Side of the road, who knows? It’s just a one nighter as we are on our way to highway 12 and that whole scenic drive thing through Torrey down through Boulder, and eventually near Zion somewhere to hopefully hook up with some “road friends”. We met this couple last year in SD when we went to get our residency. Oh, life on the road has been so sweet, Sue. Sometimes I feel like you blazed the trail, and we are following in your footsteps now and reliving so many of your blog posts. In a way, I do “wish you were here” to have a cup of Joe with and chew the fat about our travels. You are like a big sister to me, and I feel a strange kinship with you. I’m sorry I haven’t written more-

I miss you, and again, Hope your special day was awesome with the boys!

xoxo Suzi, Larry, and Kitty in Utah

    Happy belated Birthday, Sue!

    • Denise - Richmond VA says:

      Hi, Barb! 😊

    • Elizabeth says:

Thank you so much, Barb!! He seems to be sliding a bit downward the past few days. Oh well…he figures if he collapses again and ends up in ER, then they will have to do something. Meanwhile, I am researching other doctors in our local area. Thanks so much for the prayers and hugs!! The rotten insurance company and either the drugstore or the doctor clinic have messed me over with my high blood pressure meds this week…finally got them after running back and forth a few days. I really should pay a visit to the state insurance commissioner office. CVS ought not to be allowed to function. But then, likely they are doing their master’s bidding too… Meanwhile, hoping and working toward maybe at least loosing weight so needing less meds…whatever I can find to do so as to lessen this very upsetting thing that repeatedly keeps happening over the years. The insurance company does not like that my med costs so much…well guess what? I don’t like it either…but no point to take meds that make one worse either. I could write a book…well, now we can calm down and maybe get our blood sugar to go back down again too (which also seems to go up from stress). I have never wanted to be a crusader for anything…but maybe I should. I hope your life and others here is doing better than ours has this year!!

      • Dawn in NC says:

Hi Elizabeth. So sorry to hear of your medication woes. The health industry is very hard to deal with. I’m gave up on drug store pharmacies a long time ago. I like to use Costco. The limited times they are open is the only drawback. Otherwise, they almost always do a good job.
Sorry to hear that you husband has been declining the last few days. I’ll keep you both in my prayers.

So here is an idea for a browser extension if anyone can code. The problem is I sometimes use Amazon and forget to go via RVSue. So have an extension with two URLs. The first is a site like Amazon and the second is your favorite affiliate site, like this one. Every time you go to the first site it sends you to the second and then back to the first in such a way the second site gets credit for your purchase, if any. It seems there is something called smile.amazon that allows charities to get a benefit from amazon purchases more or less this way. But I do not see right away something like this.

  96. weather says:

As sunrise sent it’s first rays of light I looked through my kitchen window. The leaves there were glowing with both golden and orange shades as they were lifted by a gentle breeze. Moments later the scene became one with a heart shaped opening through which I saw the glow had moved onto someone else’s tree. It seemed as if a gift were being offered to one after another of us. ” How sweet is that? ” I thought, Good Lord, I just love this place !

Hi, Sue and everyone, I hope you’re enjoying a beautiful autumn where you are, too. Changes in the scenery here have been constant, yet arrive in small increments, so paying close attention is the best way to take it all in. Only a few summer residents have moved on to return to their year round homes. The days staying warm enough to really enjoy being lakeside has convinced most to linger. It’s bittersweet for those of us that live here permanently to see each person for the last time this year. We enjoy both the time with extra company and our times with the freedom to have our little cozy world be like a small family.

It appears that for now we can leave a comment, however, cannot reply to one in the usual way. So I’m sending one big group hug to you all. When I have the time I may leave a few comments as replies to individuals.

    • weather says:

P.S. Now I see we can, in fact, reply to comments in the usual way. Gee, that happened quickly, Yay ! Be back as soon as I can get more free time, I hope you all enjoy yourselves and visiting here until then 🙂

Weather, you leave such thoughtful and profound comments. I love how you treasure each moment and see the gift of the light during a sunrise. Trees are starting to turn here too. However, I am in such a rush in the morning, I don’t appreciate them. By the time I’m headed home, I only see them in the dimmer light of sunset. I need to slow down and enjoy the small changes too! The weather here is just beautiful, with highs in the 60s or low 70s. I leave all my upstairs windows open during the day and only close them I night. I LOVE that time, when twice a year, you can just leave your windows open and smell all that fresh air!

I am in the process of getting sick. It’s a virus going around where I work. I’m hoping it won’t linger too long. I can make it to work, but I am exhausted by the time I get home. It was very timely that I made pasta e fagoli soup earlier in the week. The soup, along with buttered bread, tastes wonderful when I’m not feeling that well. When I’m sick, my happy place is a long hot soak in the bathtub. All that hot water just takes all the tension right out of me. If I ever do get to travel the country, baths are one thing I will definitely miss.

I hope the rest of you Blogorinos are doing well. I think about you guys and wonder what you’re up to.

      Hi, weather,

Your little slice of paradise sounds wonderful! You painted a vivid picture of the beautiful changing morning light. I felt like I was enjoying the magic with you. It is so true that one has to be still – in both body and mind – in order to receive His magnificent gifts! 🍁 🍂

I am glad that mild temperatures allow the snowbirds to savor their lake and the company of their summer family a little bit longer. Enjoy their company, weather!

Earlier this week, I was outside when I saw one of my chipmunks, “Chippy” scurry from under my neighbor’s car into my backyard. The yard had a blanket of dry, fallen leaves. Chippy was having a blast running around. I could tell where he was just by watching his tail. It was happily bobbing just above the leaves. I called out, “Hi, Chippy! I see you are having fun in the leaves!” When I was at my back porch, he ran by me – about 4’ away, giving me a happy hello “peep!” Too cute! It appears that Chippy has a girlfriend….whom I have named “Ms. Chippa.” I love my yard! 😊

Have a great weekend, weather! Thank you for the hug. Sending you a **hug**

Thanks,Denise, the weekend is supposed to be mild with only a few light rain showers overnight on Saturday , I hope to drive even farther off the beaten path than I usually do, where all the wild things grow unplanned by anyone but God, I expect it be breathtakingly colorful and gorgeous…. Hi, Dawn, thanks ever so much for your sweet and newsy note. I hope your soup, baths and resting when you can is helping you feel better. I’m glad you’re able to leave your windows open, that really does make a home feel and smell lovely.
When you are feeling all better and can spare an extra couple of minutes before work I hope you get to just really look at everything outside of your home. I find that grand or wee things noticed and appreciated can start a day off so well that the following hours are nicer ones to have in life.

      Hi, Dawn,

I am sorry that you are under the weather. Your soup sounds delicious! Is the recipe a keeper? Rest, soak, soup, repeat! Feel better soon! 🛌 🛀 🍲

To get back to you regarding the live online free motion quilting class I took last week… It was both interesting and a bit frustrating, too. The frustrating part was technical issues on my end. I could not get my iPad to display the instructor, PowerPoint slides, and live comments on the same screen. Maybe it does not play nice with the platform she was using.

Anyhow…the class was very good! The instructor shared many tips and tricks when free motion quilting. I enjoyed it very much! The instructor, Kim Jamison-Hirst is one of the Canada Janome artisans. She has posted many articles and videos that range from tutorials to overviews of sewing machines, new techniques and more on the (Canadian) Janome Life blog. Always tons of good, thorough information. The class was time well spent. Kim has recently retired from her “real” job. Now she gets to play with fabric, sew, quilt, teach classes, etc. when she wants to. What a great 2nd career! 😊

    Hi Everyone,

I just learned some sad news and stopped by to see if I missed it in here. Maybe you all don’t know either. Geri, who lives in FL with Chuck has passed away. I was shocked when I went to her Facebook page to check in on her to learn about this. I can’t even pinpoint the exact day it happened but they are doing a Celebration of Life I think it was on the 29th. I have had some nice conversations with Geri on Facebook and email both. Please keep Chuck in your prayers.
